Thread: First Time in a Long Time

So my wife and I had just finished a game of San Juan and were deciding on which game to play next. We were in the mood for something different and I had been bugging her to try Screeming Eagles for some time now - she had only ever played it once with me a long time ago, so she didn't really even remember it. Finally since she couldn't think of anything else to play, she said: "Fine, let's try that Eagles game"... YES!

So after a quick set up and explanation of the game play we started off. Our first round was pretty basic, she was the Blue team and I was the Tan team. She took one plane right and one straight ahead. I did the same.

On our next round, I made the mistake of moving my Cobra Squadron plane straight ahead again and she got her Stallion Squadron right in behind me. She fired and connected. The resulting hit: 3...3...3...3 = FUEL TANK!!! Now right off the bat I'm down one plane who hadn't even taken a shot - well at least I won't have to worry about reloading the card at the end of the game.

Lucky for me, taking out my plane put her plane right in the sights of my Eagle Squadron. The first landed on th engine.

I was able to maneuver my plane in for a couple more shots with some tricky flying (close to the borders). I was able to hit the tail and then BOOM!!! The 2nd shot into the engine.

Now the game was about as even as I could get it. My Eagle Squadron had a hit on the wing and her Tiger Squadron was untouched.

The game went back and forth for awhile, me taking some shots at her and her taking some shots at me. Finally we were close to the end, I had 3 shots on her wing and one in her tail and engine. My next shot was going to win - she had hit my engine and tail once and my wing twice, it was very close.

Fortunately for me, I am very good at Roshambo - which is what the game boiled down to at the end. I predicted her moves better than she predicted mine and I got the final shot in on her engine to come back from a 2-1 deficit to win the game!

I really enjoyed our session. Some people don't like the dice mechanic, but I really do seem to enjoy dice games for some reason. Maybe it's because I don't believe in luck, but rather that the distribution is pretty uniform, it's the variance that makes things interesting - like getting my fuel tank blown out on the first shot!

I'm sure we'll play this game again, and maybe look to add one or two other dice games to our collection.

Thread: Re: Screaming Eagles - Review

I took this game out for a nostalgic play recently and I actually found the game to be more than a dice fest. With the simultaneous action selection, there is an element of bluffing and predicting your opponent's moves. Since it plays so quickly, I feel like the game is good for what it is. Not the greatest game but definitely worth taking out for a quick play if you want something fast, light, yet fun.

Thread: Screaming Eagles - Review

Game Overview - I don't want to burst anyone's bubble but this game is essentially a dice rolling game. I have only played this with 2 players , but it can be played with 4 - having 2 players per team. The object of the game is to shoot your opponents fighter planes out of the sky. This is done by moving your plane behind your enemyies and using your aresenal to destroy them.

Components - The game board is somewhat interesting in that, your figher jets can manueuver off the board in one area an return on the opposite side of the board. This is easily done with numbered markings on the top, bottom and sides of the board. The board is laid out like a grid which can be somewhat annoying to the eyes after awhile. Each team gets two jet fighters -- The tan team gets the Cobra and Eagle squadrons while the blue team gets Stallion and Tiger squadrons. The squadrons represent each plane you control.

Each plane is accompanied by a color coded "Battle Board"(BB). The bb is a cool peg bard with an image of your plane and the ammunation/defensive flares in your arsenal. The pegs (the same type as battleship pegs) are placed in the arsenal section of the BB to show remaining missle/cannon rounds as well as defensive flares. The pegs are placed in the holes on the fighter jet image when your plane takes damage. Damage is determined by a dice roll. For example, if you plane is hit the total number of the damage dice rolled determines which part of your plane is damaged. A roll of 4 hits the cockpit, roll of 7,8 or 9 hits the wing. One cockpit hit and your plane is lost. It takes 4 wing hits to destroy a plane.

There are 2 defensive flares for each plane. A defensive flare can be used to take away your opponents highest dice roll on an attack. Attacking is also determined by dice roll. The closer you are to your opponent and the type of artillery you use are factors to consider when attacking. Long Range Missles (LRM's)potenially can travel further (by dice roll)and in various directions. The drawback is that you only have 2 LRM;s per jet fighter. In addition, each plane carries 3 Medium Range Missles as well as 8 Cannon rounds.

Each team gets a deck of cards for their respective jet fighters. The cards are used to determine direction and length of movement. This is determined by a dice roll. The card stock is a little thinner than your average deck of playing cards.

Game Feel- This is essentially a dice rolling game. You roll to manuever your jet fighters and you roll to attack and determine battle damage. There is some strategy in determing how many dice you want to roll to manuever, but ultimately this is random because of the dice.

Overall Impressoin - I would recommend this for younger children (the theme is primarily targeted towards boys)approx. aged 4 - 13, although the box says ages 10 & up. There is some reading on the movement cards, but the words are shown with images which may help non-readers in the aforementioned age group. (Example of a movement card -- Roll Two Black Dice -- Break Left).

I play this occassionally with my 5 1/2 yrs. old son . I don't go out of my way to take the game off the shelf - unless my son specifically asks to play.

Final Rating - 5 out of 10 Top Guns.

Thread: Session Report

Played by Beau and Jeph
In this Milton Bradley game each player takes control of two fighter jets and try to shoot each other down in a tight dog fight. It looked like Beau's pilots were better trained as he used his cannons to rittle holes in both of my planes wings. But in a turn of events, a couple of long range missles took out Beau's wing man. Now it was two on one and the heat was on Beau. With some quick maneuvering he was able to get directly behind my lead plane and place some missles into my tail. Things were now tied up. After some back and forth positioning, my flares finally ran out and Beau was able to blow away what was left of my wings giving him the victory.
Results: Beau, Jeph
Thread: Quick Comments

Positives: An innovative wraparound board simulating a looping aerial dogfight. Easily learned and executed rules. Painless ability for house rules. Quick, action-packed gameplay.

Negatives: Round sequence becomes confusing between the four planes if players are not attentive. Possibility of extended-yet-mundane looping of planes if neither side takes a risk and/or missiles become exhausted. My board has a flaw in the punchout schematics, leading to confusion when trying to record activity.

Verdict: Worth your money if you find a good used copy. Makes for a refreshing interim game when between rounds of Settlers of Catan.
