Thread: PoP Belly - Pre-School Gaming

Being an avid gamer, I looked for ways to get my girls involved in games at an early age. Simply fun games, a company akin to Tupperware, has a great deal of early childhood games. The notion is that they do in-home game shows. I have never been to nor hosted one, but my wife picked up this game for the girls age 4 and 2. The 2 year old is still too young.

The basic concept of the games is coin management and memory. You roll two dice, one colored and one numbered. You place your coins in the pig who is standing on the corresponding color blanket. You must place at least one coin in the color pig rolled on the dice and at least one in any other pig. You can never place coins in more than these two pigs. If you forget which pigs are getting full or the capacity of each pig belly (they are different) you run the risk of popping a belly. Once this happens you count the number of chips that spilled out. The player who pops the belly does not get to move, but all other players do.

The objective is to move your farmer around the pig pen and outside the barn. You move the number of squares equal to the number of chips that spilled out of the popped pigs belly.

For young kids, this is a great game that teaches basic counting, memory and the ability to reason out which pig might pop based on number of chips already placed and the observed capacity.

I have played this about 4 times with my 4 year old. It is a great game and has provided some fun times! I recommend many of the Simply Fun games for young kids!

Thread: daughter beats dad

bought this game at a thrift store for 2 dollars brought it home and my my 5 year old daughter spotted it and asked if we could play. all the parts where there so we gave it a shot.
she was the first one to pop a pig so i took a lead but the dice were not rolling in my favor so i popped the next 2 so she took a big lead and i just could not catch her. so she won.
this game was pretty fun the game is so easy that even small kids can play.
no reading skills needed and game plays fast our game lasted only about 10-15 min.
probaly not for hardcore gamers but for some family fun give it a try we liked it you might to

Thread: Re: Color Choices

I also colored over the pink and purple sides with markers of a color closer to the colors on the game board.

Also, playing in low light areas makes it hard to tell the colors apart.

I've not yet actually played this game, but I did write "BLACK" on the die-spot that I think matches that color. Didn't notice the other problems.

Thread: Color Choices

Now this is a game designed for preschoolers, and so I'd think they'd want to keep the matching colors aspect of the game simple. You roll a die each turn and match the color on the die with the color on the blanket on the board. The colors however are very poor matches. The purple and black on the die are nearly identical. The purple on the die is much darker than the purple on the board. The orange on the die is supposed to match with a blanket that looks much more yellow than orange. The pink on the die matches with a blanket that looks more red than pink. And the green on the die looks more teal than green on the blanket.

I have one of the first print run of this game, and I will say that SimplyFun has been pretty good in the past about correcting these sorts of things (I used to be a consultant for them and know that they fixed the bleeding on the dice for Bringing Down the House for example). So I'd expect that future editions of this game will not have this problem. But in the meantime, if your preschoolers are a little iffy on their colors, you may want to give this a pass, it may just frustrate them.

Thread: Session Report

From Klaus Teuber, designer of DIE SIEDLER VON CATAN, comes this game of... exploding pigs? (It reminds me vaguely of a game I had as a kid... with a big plastic mat and molded hard plastic veggies that you fed a black plastic pig by sticking them in a hole in his back... I have no idea what the name of it was...)

Each turn, you roll the dice (a number die with 2-5 on it and a color die indicating one of the five pigs) and feed the pigs that number of chips. You must place at least one chip in the color of the pig you rolled, and the rest can only go in one other pig. When a pig bursts (thanks to a pop-off stomach), your turn ends... and everyone except the player who blew up the pig gets one point for each chip in the pig's belly.

There's actually a bit of a memory game here, as you must remember:
1) which pigs have small stomaches
2) which pigs you fed your chips
3) which pigs the leader fed their chips

As you can probably guess, this is not the second coming of EUPHRATES & TIGRIS (though I'd enjoy the whole battle portion of that game a whole lot more if exploding pigs were somehow included!) Still, it's a lot of fun and very fast (15 minutes or less, even with 4 players.)

Kyle took an early lead, which none of us managed to cut back.

Kyle Berg winner!
Mark Jackson -5
Tim Watson -6
Cassie Berg -7

Rating: 6 (a fun kids game with great bits)
