Thread: Looking for scenarios covering Shanghai 1937

Hello. I am looking for any scenarios - preferably published and playtested, but I will take anything, covering the Battle of Shanghai in 1937 during the Second Sino-Japanese War.

I have also posted under Gung Ho! but I figured PTO ASLers would check this thread out too.

Please let me know what you know. Thanks!

Thread: Missing Rules

I've just managed to get my hands on an unpunched copy of CoB. It is complete in all respects bar one - no rules; although I knew this before I bought it. There should be ASL Chapter G (Sections 1-10)according to the box.
Are these rules available anywhere, or does anyone have a spare copy they could sell me please?

Incidentally, I have the same need for Gung Ho! and Croix de Guerre, and have posted similar requests on the relevant game pages.

Thanks for reading.

Thread: Re: Are the rules from West of Alamein required, or just the British?

And while Red Star Red Sun is a GREAT scenario that would require the desert boards and WoA rules, the value of the module is getting the Japanese Army order of battle, the boards and the rules.

This opens up SO MANY great scenarios in the General, the Annuals, and everywhere else. (One of my favorites is a Time on Target scenario, of all things!)

Because of the nature of the Japanese, (flip, don't break) they added a TOTALLY new dimension to the ASL puzzle. The scenarios with Japanese are always fierce, nasty affairs where the defender NEVER feels comfortable, and the attacker NEVER knows when his troops will run out of gas.

In the box, two of the best games do require the British order of battle - On the Kokoda Trail, and The Eastern Gate. Later scenarios that I have to recommend are Totsuguki, Mayhem in Manila, Ramsey's Charge, and the excellent Last of Their Strength. (Plus TOT's Angels of the Airfield - think that was the name.)

Mind you - I make NO statement how balanced ANY of these are. I feel the IJA are IMPOSSIBLE to play-balance. The already high morale values, boosted by commissar-like leaders and banzai charge bonuses, plus the terrain defensive issues, ambush opportunies and hand to hand combat make EVERY game an edge of your seat affair. (Did I mention Tank Hunter Heros?) Balance? Who can say??

But if you are looking for some of the MOST exciting scenarios in a system that is already jacked on adrenilin, Code of Bushito is a MUST.

(Truth in advertising disclosure statement - I was NOT one of those people waiting for the IJA to be added to the SL/ASL system, and was never all that excited about the concept of changing the game rules (Casualty reduce - not break) for the IJA. That said, I was one of the playtesters for CoB, and REALLY developed a love-hate relationship with COB/IJA. I love playing scenarios with them - I HATE it when my opponent plays the IJA well AND does not roll high - because I NEVER manage that two-step feat. Skill is enough to do well with the IJA. Add any luck and it is a killer combination.)

But God they are exciting games.

(Hmmm - might have to rework this into a CoB review!)

---Russ

Thread: Re:Are the rules from West of Alamein required, or just the British?

Code of Bushido has eight scenarios.

Two of them require desert boards from West of Alamein, and one (a battle against the Russians) also uses the desert rules.

The opponents for all eight scenarios are:

Americans (twice)
British (three times)
Partisans (once)
Russians (twice)

The Americans are the regular Army units from Yanks, not the Marines from Gung Ho.

As WoA is super out of print (as is this), is it just the Britsh OoB required, or do you need any of the desert rules?

mark
