Thread: The Rules

Before anybody could ask for the rules (being that this appears to be such a popular game ), I figured I'd post a link to them. A quick reminder: the Hasbro/Parker Brothers site has the .pdf files for most of (if not all of) their games. Here's the link:

http://www.hasbro.com/default.cfm?page=cs_instructions

...and here's the link directly to The Grape Escape rules:

http://www.hasbro.com/common/instruct/Grape_Escape.pdf

Enjoy!

Thread: User Review

If you're looking for civilisation building, or strategy that warms the mind, go look elsewhere, 'cos this isn't the game for you...

But if you've got kids who like a game where the last can suddenly be first, and even the luckiest person can have it snatched away at the last minute, then read on!

Grape Escape is a simple race game, in essence. Players each have a clay figure of a grape with arms, legs and a face as their counter. These are made from playdough (which comes with the game in four colours) and kids like making these as much as any other part of the game. Movement is advanced by dice roll, with two special rolls I'll come to in a minute.

The board is something else. Imagine is the designer of 'Mousetrap' decided to make a torture chamber !
There is a contraption which fixes to the board, and makes four of the spaces in the track. Each of these spaces has a implement of grape-destruction on it - a giant pair of scissors, a big boot, a roller and a big saw. When the dice is rolled, a number from 1 to 4 results in the grape-le moving that number on. So far so ordinary. The two special rolls are (i) the 'leap' - rolling this lets you jump past the grape in front, smetimes snatching victory from them; and (ii) the 'Turn the Crank' which means the player gets to turn the handle on the contraption that makes everything move, cut, crush, squish and saw. Any grapes unfortunate enough to be in the way are destroyed! All is not lost for the player, 'cos they just start again with a new grape next turn, so the game can go on, without kids sitting out until someone else wins. This was a great move by the designer, 'cos it means that a kid can have their grape squashed, and still come back and win.

In summation, this is a great game for 5-8 year olds, as long as they're not in the habit of getting very attached to little playdough grapes... Not a big intellectual challenge, but great fun to play - and isn't that why we do it?
