Thread: Three silly boys. . .

There's a serious deficiency in session reports for some excellent children's games on the Geek, so I'm setting out to create at least some activity for these games, even the most simple and childish ones.

I recently got Dancing Eggs for my youngest son's third birthday. He cracked it open like the rest of the presents, stared for a few seconds at what appeared to be a carton of eggs, and moved on to the next gift. Yes, I was sad that this "carton of eggs" didn't elicit even so much as a smile or an iota of interest (other than the obligatory "Thank you"), but this dejection didn't last long. A few days later, after most of the excitement of his other gifts had worn off; I brought the carton back to his attention.

And thus began a wonderful afternoon of three silly boys bounding about the kitchen floor. Joined by his six year old brother, the three of us set the carton on the middle of their appropriately-elevated snack table and I briefly explained what the pictures on the dice meant. After a few practice runs – and plenty of practice egg drops and scrambles – we started a game.

A single session report for Dancing Eggs doesn’t really do justice to the game. There’s so much grabbing and running and jumping and yelling that I could barely take a pause after each action to write down what happened on each turn and get player reactions (no, I didn’t actually do this :shake I remember that the first game went horribly, and the two youngest silly boys were neither silly nor happy to try it again any time soon. However, at the urging of the oldest silly boy, we tried again with very lax rules about egg placement and the subsequent dropping of eggs from those places.

Once you get a feel for how coordinated and dexterous your young ones are in this game, you just make a suitable handicap for each player and call those the rules. Once we got this into place, we ended up playing this for over an hour (at about five minutes per game, that quite a few “sessions”). In the end, each of these three silly boys won every game, and a once-neglected birthday party became a smash hit in our house.
Thread: "Egg Stealing" Symbol?

The rules to Dancing Eggs state the following:

"If during the game non further eggs can be taken from the box, thanks to the 'egg stealing' symbol this and any other action can nevertheless be carried out."

What do they mean "egg stealing" symbol? I can't see which symbol they might have in mind.

Not to worry, we just ignore this. The rest of the rules seem pretty clear that if all the eggs are gone, and then the dice rolling, should he or she roll something that requires an egg, simply picks one from one of the holding spots of the other players.

I bought this game, but really only see it being played as a party game--hence, I need me some more rubber eggs. I was thinking 10-12 more rubber eggs, and maybe 2 wooden ones.

I was wondering what a good cheap source might be for extra rubber eggs. Everywhere I went today told me I would have to wait for Easter, and they cost more to ship online than I'd like to pay.

Thread: Haba Daba Doooooo

This is my first review so I am picking a game about which I have plenty to say. Here goes

Background: I have two boys age 8 and 6, and a little girl of 3. It is hard to find a game they will all enjoy and especially hard to find one that mummy will join in too. I am a fan of Haba toys but I had never played a Haba game until I bought this and Tier auf Tier. Both have had over a dozen plays to date.

Overview: This children's game consists of rolling dice to collect eggs which are worth 1 point each (except for the wooden one which is worth 2). The eggs must be held where the dice say (between the knees, under the chin, under the armpit, in the elbow or between cheek and shoulder) and when an egg is dropped, everybody (except the person who dropped the egg) counts up - most points wins.

Components: Packed in a real 12-egg box are 9 rubber eggs and one wooden egg. All are about the size of a real hen's egg and bright yellow. The rubber eggs are solid and feel really nice (slightly powdery to the touch), the wooden egg is smooth and really well stained and varnished - after several tough knocks there is not a chip in sight. In the remaining two egg slots are two dice. Not any old dice but two large, solid wooden, stained dice with lovely rounded corners and detailed pictures picked out in red (on the white die) and white (on the red die). Slipped in the top is a small, colour rule booklet giving the rules in several languages (about 3 pages to each). Overall the production is superb and I hate to gripe about any detail, however the egg-box is really flimsy, single-use recycled cardboard; ours is already slightly torn. I would have preferred a sturdier box but, on the other hand, this is a real egg-box, just like the ones in the shops. As such I simply can't bring myself to mark the game down.

Instructions: The instructions are clear, concise and well-illustrated, as you would expect of a children's game. However, they are presented in a slightly busy fashion which made checking for specific rules difficult and (in the English at least) miss out one key element - how does the dice pass round the table? We went with the traditional clockwise but other rules (such as the person who got the last egg rolls the dice) could as easily have been intended.

Gameplay: Simply collecting eggs, which becomes progressively more difficult as you load up your body parts.
The 6 possible activities selected by dice roll are:
- Laying an Egg - just say "cluck, cluck, cluck" and pick one out of the box.
- Egg Bouncing - lift a rubber egg about 50cms off the table and drop it, first one to grab it keeps it.
- Egg Pinching - first hand on the die wins an egg.
- The Big Shout - an icon of a crowing cockeral means the first to shout "cock-a-doodle-doo" wins an egg.
- The Big Hush - a very similar cockerel with a closed beak means anybody shouting "cock-a-doodle-doo" loses an egg.
- The Egg Dance - get up and run round the table. First back into position wins an egg.

Simplicity itself and yet somehow these six options comprise many of the great elements of games for younger kids (a bit of Snap, a bit of Simon Says) with the physical humour of trying to perform a simple task with an egg in your elbow, one under your chin and another between your knees. Games last no more than about 5 minutes and repeated plays are pretty much a requirement.

Summary: A fantastic, well-produced kids game that is simple to pick up and great fun. It is surprisingly balanced, older kids find that being quickest to every egg leads to an almost certain loss once the Egg Dance comes up and competitiveness seems to melt away to the humour. This is a kids game I must try out on adults too. My only slight gripes are the glitches in the rules and the flimsy, but thematic egg-box. A definite keeper.

It just occurs to me that, if you need more eggs, maybe real raw eggs are the solution. You can count each real egg as 3 points, and any breakage would be considered the same as a drop.

It should speed up the game, increase the tension, and solve the issue of too few eggs very easily.

We have always played with the All so I agree with you there. On your second point I think what you describe goes against the intent and spirit of the game.

The whole fun aspect of the egg bouncing is that it is an odd shape and can go anywhere. Plus the image on the die suggests it must bounce first.

As to the placing of the hands well I'd say you cannot place them in a position that would stop the egg bouncing at least once.

I have to say though you must be playing with some kids that are going to end up as some mad rules lawyers one day if you are asking these questions.

Thread: Egg Bouncing a.k.a. Die EierspringerEi

One of the symbols on the red action die is a bouncing egg. The English rules describe this action as (1) dropping a rubber egg from half a meter (~1.5 feet) above the center of the table; and (2) "players try to catch the egg."

This leads to two questions.

The first is: shouldn't the second sentence read "All players try to catch the egg."? That's what the German rules say and the incorrect capitalization of the corresponding English version suggests that the word "All" was simply omitted. When I first read the English rules I wasn't sure if the dropper could participate or not, but I think they can based on the German rules.

The second is: how does the dropping and catching work? Must the egg bounce off the table before someone catches it? Also, where do players' hands need to be during this process? If the egg doesn't need to bounce off the table and there are no rules about where players' hands can be, then can't the dropping player just let it fall straight from one hand to the other? Or maybe you are only allowed to use one hand to catch the egg (and the dropper must use the hand that drops the egg)?

Thread: Universal Tournament of the "Danza del Huevo"

During five days in Cordoba, Spain, it took place the "II Boardgame National Meeting". Among many other activities, we could enjoy what they called the "First Universal Tournament of Danza del Huevo". The author of the game, Roberto Fraga, was there.
Surprisingly enough, I participated in the tournament. Around 20 people participated, distributed in five different groups. After a brief explanation of the rules, the tournament started. Inmediately, the sound level of the room increased exponentially

One referee was controlling each group, and the winner of each group got 3 points, the loser nothing, and the other two 1 point. People with more points were put together, for the second round, in order to try to give a good chance to everybody. Of course, I could not follow most of the funny situations happening, but I can say that I had to go around the table with three eggs between my knees. It hurts!

Second and third round took place until four people with the highest amount of accumulated points were declared finalists. Me and a friend of mine could get to the final. Actually, the friend of mine had won his three previous rounds, with a total of 9 points!

The final round was full of tension. Three of us were having the chance of winning at different moments. Jorge, the friend of mine, was accumulating TOO MANY eggs below his neck. Each time he was getting a new egg all the people watching was just shouting "neck, neck, neck!!!", he would throw the white die, and... guess... NECK! After more than ten minutes, the person being second in that moment lost an egg, and Jorge got to be winner with SIX, 6, eggs in his neck!!!

Absolutely impresive, and really, really funny.

Thread: Thoughts on more than 4 players and a neverending game!

I played this game with 6 players. It was a blast and it worked. I would imagine it working just as well with 5 players.

However, all the players were adults with a good amount of dexterity. After all the eggs in the tray were taken, all we ended up doing is take eggs from other players when an egg had to be distributed.

This went on on another 10-15 minutes and we decided to call the game and score for egg posession as no one had dropped an egg.

I could tell that the players were getting a little tired of the game as the initial laughing and fun had gone.

Any ideas on how to 'solve' the issue of a potentially neverending game?

Thread: Drug-Free Incapacitation

The Rules (Just the General Gist)
Everyone stands around a table. A 1d6 die is rolled, with each side depicting a task that will need to be performed. As soon as the die is rolled, everyone tries to do the task first, whether it is grabbing the die, cockle-doodle-doodling, running around the table, cluck cluck clucking, remaining absolutely silent, or doing the equivalent of a jump toss with a rubber egg.

Whoever wins gets, as their prize, a rubber egg! A 2nd die is rolled by the winner. This die depicts body cavities in which the won egg is to be placed by the winner (think nice thoughts, children). The egg gets placed in this cavity and stays there for the duration of the game. The game ends when someone drops an egg. The player dropping the egg automatically loses. Of the remaining players, whoever has the most eggs in their body cavities wins.

My Opinion
It's a deliciously elegant party game. At its foundation, it's a "ring the buzzer first" type of game, but the different types of "buzzers" to ring are astoundingly perfect--they're all very different, and it's difficult to get ready to peform exactly the right task as soon as the die is rolled.

Now, added to this is a beautiful, slow system of players becoming physically incapacitated. Tasks becomes harder and harder to perform as you hold more and more eggs in your body's nooks.

Does this mechanic sound familiar? It should--it's the mechanic that has been used in every single drinking game ever invented! Think about it--drinking games involve a simple set of tasks that must be performed, and the fun comes as you become less and less able to function as the games runs along, causing you to do stupid things. Eiertanz has the advantage over drinking games in that:
1. you can play with children without feeling like an unresponsible adult, and
2. you won't vomit when the game is over.

Strangely, it's a party game, but it's only for 2-4 players! For that matter, even though it's a fine game with 2 or 4 players, it's really really good only with 3 players. With 4 players, there aren't enough eggs to go around. Others have suggested buying two sets for this very reason, and though I can see how playing with 2 sets would be very fun allowing more players, this isn't the cheapest game! The game as a 2-player game is a bit broken--the ideal strategy is to load your opponent with eggs until they drop one. But if you allow yourself just to have fun, it's fine as a 2-player game. I have had great fun playing with kids 5-10, though I think the game should work pretty well down to 4 yr olds. I see no reason why adults in the right mood wouldn't enjoy it in the absence of children.
