Thread: Re: Frank Luke?...Deluxe edition in the U.S.?...

I've posted 3 pics from the Phoenix airport of an original Spad 13 colored to look like Frank Luke's. He was from Arizona and they are proud of the native son.

This is a nice display area around the top of the escalators, with both still photos and some short movies on various bits of period (mostly flying, some general WWI) information. You could easily spend 30 mins or more there, so look for it if you pass through Phoenix airport.

This area is BEFORE you have to go through security, so you don't have to be on an airplane to see it.

Same image gallery

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/images/user/22608
Thread: Re: Frank Luke?...picture of markings

Well, the site turned down the pic for here-- said it was not related.

Hmm.

But suggested I put it on my personal gallery. I hadn't even tried to have one of those, so here goes pic #1.

SPAD 13 with Frank Luke's markings, in the Seattle Museum of Flight.

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/images/user/22608

I'll post the one from Phoenix too-- it's much easier to enjoy. (SMF is really snug in some places.)

Thread: Re: Which boxed set to get first?

I have spent quite a bit of time searching these forums as well as the FFG website,

Page 2 of the entire list-- that is one click backwards--

"Can Someone Clarify What Expansions Work With What?"

Page 5-- that is 4 clicks back--

Where to start with the Wings of War series?

I could keep on going, but there is not need to make the point. This does not involve selecting an individual topic line-- which would work even faster but requires picking the right topic. It's just clicking backwards on the whole forum and glancing at the headlines.

How hard is that?

"If you see by the title you're not interested..." misses the point too.

Things are harder to find BECAUSE of the redundancy. Eldard's post is, indeed, very thorough. You can find similar detail at least six times in previous threads.

Of course, they would not be answering your own personal question...which is not phrased exactly like the two posts that I found in less than 30 seconds...Perhaps somehow posting it yourself makes the answers less confusing and contradictory, but I wouldn't know about that.

You have a son. Learn from this and don't waste time taking offense. It's what you'll want him to do.

I have spent quite a bit of time searching these forums as well as the FFG website, not to mention Ebay, to try and understand what is needed to play the game. Much of the information that I found was at times confusing at best, and at worst contradictory.

I even went so far as to download every set of rules posted at the FFG website in an attempt to sort this all out.

At this point in time I wouldn't even bother with going the boardgame route. I'd just wait for the release on XboxLive arcade and pay the amount that is required to unlock the game and enjoy it if it weren't for the fact that my son will be turning 5 in less than 2 weeks and I think he would really enjoy "flying" planes around the kitchen table with me.

Perhaps you need to have another beer (Beer Fan microbadge) and relax a bit.

Thank you Eldard Your post explained how this game is packaged better than any of the numerous posts I read.

If the title is explicit (which it is) and you don't want to read the thread, then just don't read it. Some folks either don't know how to search, or just can't find what they're looking for. Not really a big deal as far as I'm concerned. And besides, if the existing thread(s) is/are old enough, then the information might be outdated.

Not printed in English yet, or OOP and out of stock in US (or something else)?

Never available in the U.S. Ask FFG; it was their decision as the U.S. distributor of the game.

Edit: Well, probably *don't* ask FFG. This has come up before, and their point, as I recall it, was that it was largely superfluous with the individual minis and the box sets they'd already sold.

Can anyone offer me some guidance as to which of the boxed sets to try to get a start with Wings of War?

Thanks in advance.

The boxed games are complete with aircraft cards, a limited number of manuever decks for those airacraft (in most cases, enough to fly 2 vs. 2 engagements), range sticks, player aid boards, game markers/chits, and a rulebook.

Famous Aces is single seat fighters only, but includes the Red Baron. It does not include the rules for altitude, but those can be downloaded from the company's website.

Burning Drachens introduces some new fighter types and rules for balloons and ground-based anti-aircraft.

Watch Your Back! introduces twin-seaters with tailgunners.

The Airplane Pack Series I miniatures are from the Famous Aces boxed set, and the Airplane Pack Series II miniatures are from the Watch Your Back! set. Each miniature comes with the model aircraft, a plastic stand with stem segments, a deck of maneuver cards for that aircraft type, and the aircraft card should you decide not to use the miniature.

So, if you plan on obtaining the miniatures from both Series, you're probably best off with Burning Drachens.

If you're not interested in miniatures, get Famous Aces.

I was curious about the WoW system, and started with the WW2 game, Dawn of War. There are some changes in the basic rules to accommodate the damage capacity of heavier weapons carried by the early-WW2 aircraft. But I was so impressed with this set, I went back and got all the WW1 sets and miniatures.

Cards from the Immelmann booster are marked IM, from Recon Patrol RP and so on.

All the best,

A.

Try this list first, which is buried a ways down in the forum:
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/158240

Andrea has listed the planes and decks that come with each boxed set and what minis come in each "wave."

The minis do come with cards, but only their maneuver deck (the cards that have the arrows printed on them indicating where the plane will travel). You need the appropriate damage deck(s) from one of the base sets and ideally the other stuff too, like the counters and the plane mats for organizing the cards. If you're somewhere where you can get the Deluxe Set, it's got four minis and all the needed accessories; unfortunately, it's not available in the States from FFG.

You can play with the Famous Aces / Watch your back! rules. Anyway true, the Miniature rulebbok can be downloaded and will provide you specific rules for altitude and even for the Roland C.II two-seater if you will buy it separately.

Nexus site is there: www.wingsofwar.it
But Miniature rules are also on FFG site:
http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/wingsofwarsupport.html

The downloadable version is missing only the scenarios, that can be found there:
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/file/info/31969

All the best!

Andrea
Thread: Re: Mixing different language editions

Mix with no problems! All the components are produced together and are actually the same. Then they are assembled in boxes with rulebooks in different languages, but cards - counters - mats- rulers come from the very same bunch. The box can also vary: in Dutch we had 100% Dutch boxes, in other countries there are boxes in English with different mixes of languages on the back.

There is only one exception: Russia. The Russian edition is printed in Russia. Cards are die-cut and some parts are in Russian. They seem to be exactly the same size and all the gaming data are the same, so there should be no problems mixing them too anyway.

Besides, what I wrote above is true for boxes. Booster packs (and airplane packs for the miniature version) have no rules, so they are actually the same stuff in the same packaging all over the world.

Thanks for the answer, but to be sure, I'd like to clarify my question:

Is it possible to use the cards in an english language booster pack with a dutch base set? Or are the cards in a different size, the arrows different, or different in another unforeseen and incompatible manner?

Again, I don't care about the language itself; the reason I ask is purely because of pricing and availability of the sets in Holland.

Just to be certain: I presume I can mix (if needed) sets and boosters from different language editions without problem? Purely from a compatibility (size of cards mostly) point of view. I don't believe there are any language-dependent components on the cards, but even if there were, I can deal with those.

Reason is, only FA and WyB have been released in Dutch. If I end up liking this, I may "need" to get boosters in a different language.

For demos I've had 10 and (once) 11 people on a 4x 8 table. Makes for a 'target rich' environment, but never felt too crowded.

Doing this with minies, you definitely want to keep each plane's card handy, for there will be times when you need to put cards on the table because a space does get crowded.

When the game first came out, I was disappointed in the size of the cards. But I've gotten used to them, and realize the effect on playing space is another place where bigger would not be better.

Please!

(The next sound you hear will be me stepping down off of my soap box.)
