With a 1 you had to move the robber since the 7 is not thrown as much. With 3D4 you will throw an even steeper distribution (more 7's and less 2's). I don't think that will be as much fun but let me know how it turns out.

Thread: Defender when there's no Cities

We play with the original rules rather than the revised rules. ( eg. Saboteur takes 1 Ore + 1 Wood to restore a city, 1 Inventor card etc. )

For the first time in hmm 120 games, we had a rare condition where the barbarians invaded way too fast for any of us to build a knight ( partly due to unavailability of wheat thanks to the dice, and also due to a statistically rare occurrence of very many black ships and many 7s being rolled).

So for the next two barbarian invasions, there were no cities, but we managed to build some knights.

The black ship was still moved - because knights are deactivated when the barbarians arrive.

However, there was some dispute regarding whether or not the individual with the greatest number of active knights gets a defender card. The printed English rules we found made no explicit mention - though they say that players with no cities are immune (suggesting that there is nothing to defend so no card), and they say that the person with the greatest number of knights, when the knights outweigh the cities, is the defender (so a card is given).

We found an unofficial German translation which suggested that the knights of players with no cities do not count against the defence of Catan - which is something we never played before, but which would definitely indicate that there is no Defender when there are no cities..

We decided (for that game) that there is no defender with no cities - on the evidence that we had at the time, and also on the weak basis that cities should be restored before developing an arms race.

Can anyone provide substantiated clarity on this issue?

Thread: Re: 60 minutes... SERIOUSLY!?

Same here. It all depends on the crowd. Confident decision-makers make the game short, while less confident players (even when experienced) can really drag the game out (esp. where trading is concerned).

I've played several games that hit the 45-minute mark (two were with confident first-timers, who work out their variable strategies during others' turns). I've also played four-player games that near the five-hour mark.

With one group of friends who are particularly deliberate, when they play with their family (not having me to keep them focused and moving), five-player games can last up to seven or eight hours. Which is just insane.

If all of the players are experienced, games frequently can take less than an hour. We have had many games completed in 30 minutes with 3 players. In fact, last night we fished two games in 75 minutes. With 4 players, 50-60 minutes is about as fast as it can go.

Has anyone actually played a full game close to that short of a time? For comparisons sake, Settlers, on the same Mayfair site is pegged at 45min to 60min. AFAIK, the quickest game of C&K would probably be only around 1.5 hours.
One other thing to note is that if you have a settlement on one of the 5's, but the robber is currently sitting on it. If a five is rolled you clearly don't get a resource, so if you have the privilage you can use it to take any resource that you want.

In some situations it can be really helpful for the robber to block numbers on resources that you already have lots of in the hope you can pick a resource that you really need.

PlayCatan seems to require a subscription fee for whatever their "premium" service is. At the very least, it appears to require a flat fee. AFAIK, AsoBrain is free, but I do hear some negative remarks about them and the community. However, without having played either of them before, I will NOT comment any further than that.

2) Dunno if AsoBrain lets you play C&K vs just AI either. If not, then we definately need a vs AI only option for C&K. Vs AI is definately no substitute for online MP, but vs AI only means games go EVEN QUICKER (slow moves, people quitting), and even more flexible. Hopefully, it'll be flexible enough that you can save your game partway through and pick up with it later. If AsoBrain does vs AI only, it would be nice to have more options. Assuming they don't fall flat on their faces with all the hype, it sounds like PlayCatan may come out to be a very nice, 1p implementation of the game.
The almanac entry for this card at the end of the rules says "You may offer each opponent any 1 resource card from your hand. He must exchange it for any 1 commodity card from his hand of his choice." It later goes on to say "Your opponent chooses which commodity card to give you if he has more than one."

So, you don't name a card, you don't fish for cards, you simply offer any resource from your hand, and they give you a commodity of their choice from their hand. I know that's not the interpretation anyone would get by just reading the card, but that's how the rules say to play it. I believe this is reworded in the fourth edition.

Trick is, you'll want to get those card sleeves in 3 different colors to distinguish the 3 different types of progress cards.

Rappak wrote:
um... from what I remember of the rules, you can't steal commodity cards with the robber. I own the US, Mayfair 3rd edition and the backs of the commodity cards AND the resource cards are identical.
Another thing is active or not, a knight acts as a "road block" for both the player who owns it and towards other players. For the former, it doesn't matter if the knight is active or not. If the knight is on the spot where YOU want to build a settlement, you'll have to move it first. Ditto with the latter. Your inactive knight will indeed prohibit another player from building his roads past your knight and building a settlment on that spot.

I can't say that I have a brilliant reason as to why it can't be sabotaged, but it doesn't make much sense to me. The whole point of the Metrop, is that it is immune to attack. Sabotage seems to be an attack on the city, so I would say that you can't do it. Hope it makes senseI was thinking this too. However, in game theme terms, Barbarians come in en masse to take down a city. I can see the fortifications of a Metropolis protecting against that threat. A saboteur on the other hand goes in covertly and as with the illustration on the card, burns the city to the ground from the inside out. I'm still on the fence about this one

Merchantman wrote:
OBSERVATIONS:

1. Points are bad. Unless you're about to win, things that give you points generally make your position weaker. Not only do people take note of you and may embargo you, lots of really powerful cards in the game can only be used against people who have more of something, usually points.I'd imagine it's better to take a Metropolis anyways rather than risk losing it to another player you suspect is gunning for it. Otherwise, you'll either need to make up 5 commodities or risk losing it forever if it's the 5th level.

Merchantman wrote:
More importantly, City Walls allows you to hoard cards. With 3 City Walls, your maximum hand size increases to 11.3 city walls should increase your hand limit to 13, NOT 11

Merchantman wrote:
5. Space is situational. Unlike the basic game, you don't really need a lot of settlements or cities or even the Longest Road to win. I've won with just 2 cities and 2 settlements. Having less cities and settlements means you have less points, and thus appear less on the radar and aren't vulnerable to nasty things like Master Merchant; and you don't invest as much in roads. If you decide to spread out and suffer the point increase, make sure you have a good plan, since it exposes you to attack.

6. Non settlement points are big. As a corollary to the above, points that don't come from settlements on the board are usually pretty big. The most common ones are Defender of Catan, Printing Press, Constitution, Longest Road and the Metropolises. The main reason why they're huge is because they can be gained with alacrity, which means that they can be reservoirs of "virtual points" that you only exercise when you're assured of a steady and sure path to victory.

The most points I've ever seen gained in one turn is 8. One for Constitution, two for Longest Road, two for Blue Metropolis, two for Green Metropolis, plus one settlement. Yes, he instantly won from a position of 5 points - two Cities with City Walls, plus one settlement and four connected roads. This is unusual, however. Usually, people win from a position of between 6 and 11 points, with 7-9 points being the usual winners.I would've mentioned that it seems too much of a stretch to not have enough building space to squeeze in extra setts/cities, but I'm reminded in Seafarers Of Catan - New Shores, that's also a 13pt game.

5VP cards to go around, 2pts for LR, 2pts for LA, and up to 1pt for settling on the outlying islands which would be x4 since all players each can get this bonus VP which totals to 13 additional points

C&K on the other hand...
2pts for Metropolis x3 = 6
1pt for Merchant control = 1
VP cards x2 = 2
LR = 2pts
Defender Of Catan x6 = 6
== 17 pts total

1-
agree. Inactive knight blocks ability for other players to build their roads past your in/active knight

2-
yes. You may place a robber next to a knight. Even if it does get chased away, you still get to steal one card from an opponent with an adjacent building to the robber, and until he performs the knight's action, he stands to have some of his resources/commodities blocked in the meantime.

Just keep in mind robber can't move until the Barbarians attack at least once. Til then, on a 7, all you do is check if you're above the threshold of cards.

3-
yes. Deactivating the knight will chase it away

3a-
Correct. Rules say you may NOT activate a knight and then have that knight perform an action on the same turn. The most you can do is have an activated knight chase away the robber, then pay one wheat to activate that knight so it'll be ready to perform on the next turn.

last-
one resource from each tile that your city is adjacent to.

Thread: Re: Different Progress Cards in Different Editions of C&K?

Ponton wrote:

However, what I can answer you is the thing concerning the different editions of the Saboteur card. The change has not taken place because the designer desired a different effect. On the contrary, the 3e Saboteur is, what the designer initially desired. However, in 2003 KOSMOS released a new set of Catan games with plastic miniatures instead of wooden pieces. Now there was no way to place a city upside-down. So, the old Saboteur card needed to be changed. That's why there is this change at all. The reason why 4e Mayfair Catan also has this change is the compatibility with international Catan tournament rules.

Gameplay changed just to accomodate components? It shouldn't have came to that

Thread: Re: Catan Cities and Knights Rule Question

Ponton wrote:
The official answer on this is: YES, you receive any one free resource if the robber blocks the number that was rolled and you've no other settlements or cities on another hex with that number.

http://www.siedeln.de/faq/254_325_de.html

Fun to read through Google translate:
Provides me the aqueduct and then a commodity, because if I am a robber blockade does not produce?

I have, for example, a settlement on Lehmfeld with paragraph 4 and this field is locked with the robbers. I've already reached the aqueduct. The 4 is rolled. Will I have in this case, any commodity of my choice?"

Short answer for pragmatists:
Yes.

Long answer for adepts:
Only when the "7" is rolled, do nothing. If you are a robber but due to blockade no regular income receive raw materials, you may instead be any aqueduct take-produced commodity.

At least on Catan is therefore in our world yet futile hope that in a progressive society the impact of the crime decline, has become a reality.

Looks like we're too mean in our group. I'll propose the change and see how it flies next time we hit C&K.
