Hi all!

First of all, I'm sorry it took so long to respond again. In what can be charitably described as a mild bout of incompetence, some people at my P.O.Box place misplaced some envelopes, and so the Star Wars figures that you so kindly sent my way spent some time in limbo.

Thankfully, I finally received the envelopes. Scott and Kevin, you guys rock!

So, status report: Kevin, Scott and a local friend have donated their spares to the cause, so what I'm missing now is: One battle droid (beige) and three destroyer droids (black). Scott generously added two collectible game figurines that can stand for DDs.

So, if anybody is still willing to help, all I'd need is one person to send both spares, and two persons who send one DD. Please post in this thread if you are willing to do it, so I don't get any more pieces than necessary. Also, please geekmail me your PayPal address if you'd like me to refund the postal charges.

Again, thanks a lot. I'm deeply moved and amazed at all the inconditional help and, for the record, so is my wife.

Regards,

Antonio.

My dice with Anakin on the other leave plenty to be desired. It rarely matters what the TF rolls with his dice to add to the blocked squares, 99% of the time I'm stopped by the printed numbered squares. It's uncanny, how "accurate" my rolls are .

Sadly, there is only 1 DD on the 1st level, but if you can either get more there or Naboo starts hopping to the top floor, they can quickly face 2-3 DDs. BDs can be used to whittle them down as well. 1-2 hits from BDs then 1-2 attacks from DDs and any of the non-Jedi tend to go down. You can always take down the Palace Guards later. If you can take out 2 of the 3 characters, the Naboo side is very vulnerable, having to keep 1 Jedi, the remaining char and a Palace Guard alive for the Throne Room.

Interestingly, in the games I play, Maul tends to have little trouble dispatching BOTH Jedis !

I think your dice results are the complete opposite to mine ... my DDs were killed off quickly by Naboo (he rolled hits and my defence dice continually came up blank) and the same fate (& dice results) awaited the DDs arriving from the battlefield. I won't even mention the BD hit success ratio . And I did manage to get one Jedi down but threw very few blocks and no ripostes in defence so that battle was pretty one-sided as well.
And don't get me going on the battlefield dice and what my mate kept throwing with his catapults .
But in Hasbro's defence, they said it was extensively playtested with a majority of wins to the TF so I think that is what they wanted - thematically true (numbers with the TF but a chance for Naboo to win) but relatively balanced.

Thread: Re: I can never win as the "good guys"

Interesting posts - had my first game this week, I played the TF position and was beaten mainly due to ignoring the throne room (but also terrible dice).
Losing Maul (took out one Jedi) about 2/3 into the game was the beginning of the end as the remaining Jedi is virtually untouchable in the palace. But I had neglected Palace movement with my droids and the Naboo player got Panaka and Obi-Wan in front of the two doors in the Throne room so there was no way I was going to get in ... it was just a case of waiting for anakin to finish - and since there is no way to harm or stop him we just called it a Naboo win.

Also interesting - there is an early post from designer Rob Daviau in the Reviews section saying that it was playtested about 150 times with an overall win ratio of 55%+ for the TF.
Since Anakin is always going to get through, the whole game revolves around the Jedi-Sith battle; whoever gets out quickly will win, and for the TF to win they need to either get Darth Maul out early or to have Maul keep the Jedi tied up for as long as it takes to get enough droids in the Palace to get the Naboo numbers down to two or less.

Thread: Re: Return of The Jedi

The heart of all six movies is the story of Darth Vader. The most critical event in ROTJ was the redemption of Anakin by killing the Emperor. I don't think the Empire wiping out the rebels on Endor or in space should be an auto win. If the rebel's forces were wiped out yet Luke redeems Vader and kills the Emperor, I'd still say that's still a win for the light side. So, an Empire win would have to be the obliteration of the rebel space fleet plus converting Luke to the dark side. Rebels losing either Endor or space battle would give the Empire player a huge advantage in converting Luke; "Your fleet is lost, and your friends on the Endor moon will not survive." Winning on Endor or in space for the Empire shouldn't be an auto victory, but it could almost guarantee victory, much like calling Order 66 in Risk - Star Wars: The Clone Wars Edition.

For the Rebels, winning should be through killing the Emperor, which could be done in 1 of 2 ways: Converting Vader back to the good side, or by blowing up the Death Star, which would also require not getting wiped out in space and winning on Endor. Large Empire advantages would have to be given to winning the space battle or Endor in order to force the Rebel player to focus all resources on just converting Vader and ignoring the other battles.

I think the Rebels should have some sort of advantage on the Endor battle. Ewoks wouldn't be that powerful, but perhaps they could respawn Ewoks infinitely, while the Empire can't get reinforcements. It would be similar to the gungan battlefield, only in reverse. This way the Endor battle will eventually be won by the Rebels, and the strategy for the Empire would be just to stall it long enough to convert Luke and wipe out the Rebel fleet. An Empire win on Endor should be about as likely as the Gungans winning in Queen's Gambit. This would be similar to War of the Ring, where a military victory by the shadow is inevitable, the Freeples must simply stall it long enough to destroy the Ring.

The Empire should have a strong advantage in the space battle. As long as that shield is up, the Rebels will just watch as their fleet gets smaller and smaller. This will be like the Queen's Gambit palace battle, where the goal is just to wipe everyone quick enough. The rebel strategy will be to get the shield down quick enough to be able to move their starfighters inside the Death Star.

This is great! For the rebels, you could make the destruction of sheild of the death star enevitiable (like in queens gambit, the droid ship can not be prevented just slowed) after that maybe there could be a "death star board" like the interior of it, this would add a bit more depth to the rebels i think.hope this helps

Thread: Re: Return of The Jedi

We've been thinking about developing this also. Here's a quick rundown of our ideas so far...

The space and planet battles would use some of the mechanics from the Naboo battlefield, but modified to represent these battles more closely. One idea was to use reversable hex tiles on the planet battlefield. One side of the tiles would be generic, while the other would have Ewok ambushes and various other battle effects. The rebel player would secretly place these before the start of the game. They would then get flipped when an Empire unit tries to enter.

So far the ideas for the space battle are simplest - the rebels are mainly trying to preserve their fleet in order to destroy the DSII once the shield generator is down. However, if the Empire can destroy the Rebel fleet, they would win.

Both these battles would generate bonus cards just like the Naboo battlefield.

We were thinking of using a variation of Epic Duels for the confrontation between Luke, Vader and the Emperor. Epic Duels even has a Throneroom map. This battle would have several angles. First, the Emperor's attempt to convert Luke to the Dark Side. If he should succeed, a major bonus of some sort would go to the Empire player (1 or 2 extra card draws per turn, possibly). The rebel player would have to balance Luke's combat with the risk of him turning to the Dark Side. A track would keep tabs on how close Luke is to turning. "I Will Not Fight You" cards would move Luke further from the Dark Side, while attacks and certain cards played by the Emperor would move Luke closer to the Dark Side. If Luke can defeat Vader, then the rebel player would get the aforementioned card bonus. Unlike the Queen's Gambit lightsaber battle, this battle would be the most involved and exciting battle in the Endor game.

The Shield Generator Bunker battle would be somewhat similar to the Palace battle in Queen's Gambit. There would only be one level, but multiple rooms. Han, Leia and the droids would be featured here.

One issue we've not yet solved is varying strategies for both sides. The Dark Side is ok, since it can win in mulitple ways:

- Destroy the rebel fleet
- Eliminate all rebels at the Shield Generator Bunker

Bonus cards from the planet battle and a successful turning of Luke to the Dark Side would help both these efforts.

The rebels however, can only win by taking the Shield Generator Bunker. I suppose victory in the throne room could be a rebel victory too, but I'd be concerned about the rebel player ignoring the bunker.

Anyway, I think this could be an awesome game!

John

Yeah, it would totally work. I believe Lucas made the symmetry intentional (I and VI 'bookend' the entire Saga) so that's probably why the idea would fit so well.

Thread: Return of The Jedi

Hey, I was thinking. What if the game was rereleased but with a different scenerio. The destruction of the second death star. I t would be perfect. Queens gambit had; The jedi duel, Anikan's space battle, The palace, and the battlefeild. If they did Rotj there could be; The endor assult on the bunker, the jedi duel with luke and vader, The space battle, the assult on the interior of the death star and the endor battle feild. Just like the game each battle ground would influence the other, whoever wins the jedi duel helps on the space battle, if the bunker is destroyed the shelid on the death star is down, and so on. So post your ideas, maybe ill even try to make it who knows!

Just saw this thread and I'm in... I'll dig up my extras tonight and drop them in the mail. It'll do those droids some good to be activated for duty after being powered down in a plastic bag for years. I just hope they still work!

I think I'll throw in a couple of Battle Droids from the Star Wars CMG that Mr. Baggins can use as proxies for the other two... They're not exactly the same scale, but they're pretty close and they'll look okay until he can get proper replacements.

What astounds me, Andy, is that you were able to part with Queen's Gambit... You'd have to pry my copy from my cold, dead hands. Kudos to you for sharing a stellar game with a fellow geek.

Thread: Re: Dissecting the strategy

As the Naboo player, I usually think of the strategy like this: force the TF player to waste actions in the palace. I love to see droids moving and not firing because they are too far out of position.

This usually means clearing out level 1 and clogging up the reinforcement hexes as much as possible, or getting characters into the throne room and blocking the door. (or clearing out the third floor and blocking the stairwells)

Which one you use depends on the cards you draw. The worst thing is to start moving guys up to the third floor and then having the window ledge cards drying up, because then the TF player can use both his 1st and 3rd floor forces against you. I like to have at least 3 window ledge cards in my hand before attempting this, and possibly some backup palace cards.

In general I agree with the first poster somewhat - you should think very carefully about using an Anakin or Starfighter card for the other action on the card instead. I'd say the same thing goes for any Darth Maul or Jedi card. And for the TF, be careful about using up those Palace Reinforcement cards in case the Naboo player starts clearing out the 1st floor too quickly.

I would say the most important card in each player's deck is the one that allows you to exchange your hand. The ability to continue a run in the palace can be devastating. Or, if the palace is nearly decided, the ability to draw more Anakin/Starfighter cards can give you the time you need to force the issue.

Well written and thought out.

When I first obtained this game, I felt that it was heavily weighted in favor of the Trade Federation. After playing it a time or two, I think it's a little closer but still tilted slightly in favor of the TF player.

My "bonus card" strategy has always been:
TF: Play a minimum of one battlefield card per turn. When you get bonus cards, draw ALL Theed palace cards.
Naboo: Play battlefield cards if you don't have any Anakins or Jedi cards. When you get bonus cards, draw all battlefield cards and hope for Anakins.

I believe MTTs and ATTs count as droids, so the Dark Side has no pieces left and no way to reinforce).

IF however Darth Maul is still alive, then he technically has a chance to reduce the LS to two or less pieces before Anakin gets through to fulfill the "rulebook win condition." So in that case the two "win conditions" make a difference and the FAQ is probably wrong.

I'm guessing the latter situation (all droid pieces killed, Maul alive, Anakin not through, neither player has resigned) might occur in 0.0001% of games in some alternate universe somewhere

It felt artificial and completely unnecessary, and I have refused to try it. In that regard, it's much like "War of the Ring", clearly designed for two players. Besides, with four, partners have to talk about what to do every turn, and the game will probably take longer.

An old thread, but I thought I'd just throw in my 2c that the game mechanics are particularly suited for splitting the duties between players. Due to this, the four-player game works very well.

As compared to e.g. War of the Ring, which has to divide up the respective nations on both sides.

Images by TMJJS

The only slight issue IMHO is that the Space/Plains of Naboo player has a slightly less interesting, 'support' type role, since the Starfighter battle is not as exciting as the Palace/Jedi battles.

The Plains battle is still a lot of fun though, so that somewhat makes up for it. One could also toy with houserules for changing the pairings (Jedi/Space and Palace/Plains would be my suggestion).

Tal

Hi everyone,

I recently sent my copy of Star Wars: the Queen's Gambit to a fellow geek, Mr.Baggins, who has been a BGG patron for two years and for whom this is his grail game. While he lives in Mexico, he drove to Texas to pick it up.

On the way, holes were punched in the box, and DROIDS WENT MISSING.

Now, counting his replacements, he is missing 4 Battle Droids and 6 Destroyer Droids. Kind soul he is, he doesn't blame me at all, and chalks it up to fate. He says he can just use other minis as replacements. He's too humble to do this on his own, so that's why I'm posting this for him.

But owners of this game: you know how beautiful it is when the whole, monstrous game is set up with every single piece!

AND OWNERS OF THIS GAME: you ALSO know that every game comes with a bag of replacement parts! Every single owner of this game has a bag with one extra Battle Droid and one extra Destroyer Droid in it. No one would consider the game "incomplete" with missing extras.

If only FOUR of those owners sent him their EXTRA Battle Droids, and only SIX of those owners sent him their EXTRA Destroyer Droids...what a happier man Antonio Chavez would be.

The address he picks up from in Texas is:
Jaime Salais
1211 San Dario Ave
#1537
Laredo, TX 78040

Geekmail me with your shipping costs and I will happily reimburse you.

Show the man that the Geek ain't stingy, and show him what it looks like to have a full Queen's Gambit set up!

I checked the web site for the store I bought it from (it's mainly in Finnish only), looks like they've sold off their copies. It's listed as quantity in stock "very low or sold out".

Some Euro input for you.

US games are usually $1 US = 1 euro (or more), even though the rate is $1.5 to 1 euro these days.

I checked my records: bought the game in December 2003 for 44.95 euros (about $48 US dollars at that time), and have never regretted the acquisition.

It retailed for $49.99, but it was widely available at the time for $40.

It never was clearanced, though (which was what I was waiting for) so I never picked it up back then.

I was lucky to get it recently from a generous BGGer. It was a giant hole in my collection for a long time.

I remember seeing this in Toys 'R' Us back in 2000 for something over $40. At the time, I had Axis & Allies and Samurai Swords, so I was definitely into big, box-of-toys type of games. However, I was so disappointed with the first of the new Star Wars movies that it actually biased me not to buy this game! D'oh, what a mistake!!!

Anyone remember the orginal retail price?
I would guess if you take 8 years of inflation into account you aren´t actually off to bad with 100$ for the game...
