Thread: Re: 1981 second edition comments and manifest

I bought my copy in 2004. It came with oder of appearance charts and a half-page of rules for the 81 edition as well as the afore-mentioned components for the 65 edition (so four OOA charts instead of two).
The units were printed on peel-and-stick paper (which doesn't stick on non-glossy counters very well; I din't try it on glossy counters). In mine, the German Wehrmacht units are blue with black print, not gray with black print -- a lighter shade of blue than the Fallschirmjager units, which have white print. And the tan looks more like puke orange. Yecch.
They also added an indicator in the upper right corner of units that can move into woods hexes.
And the Germans get 5 points of TAC after the weather clears.
Thread: 1981 second edition comments and manifest

Operation Greif, 2nd edition
Self-published (1981)
Designed by Don Lowry with Chester Hendrix

Players: 2
Period: World War II, Bulge
Scale: Operational
. Turn: 1/2 day
. Map: 2 miles
. Unit: primarily regiments, brigades, and divisions

Container: plastic bag

Components: 4 page rules folder, 2 order of appearance cards (Allied and German), sheet of paper with artwork for 313 new counters.

Counter Manifest: 122 tan (8 blanks), 105 gray (4 blanks), 24 black (1 blank), 20 red (3 blanks), 20 white forts/fortifications, 10 tan/gray, 12 blue (1 blank).

Don Lowry says: "This is a variant of Avalon Hill's classic Battle of the Bulge game and replaces only the counters, Order of Appearance cards and some specific rules where mentioned. It can be used with various combinations of optional rules, according to the preference of the players. All tournament game rules of the original game apply except as amended herein."

Comments: This variant was originally designed by Don Lowry (publisher of Panzerfaust) and apparently first released by Guidon Games in 1970. According to the second edition designer's notes by Chester Hendrix, he only made two substantive changes - replacing the original stacking rules with a stacking points system and adding shading to units with ZOC's. In addition, the second edition incorporated clarifications, rearranged data, and errata corrections.

(This is a portion of an article originally published in issue 21 of Simulacrum, July 2004.)
