Thread: Re: PDF of the tokens anywhere?

I was missing a few tokens, so I looked at the "have parts to trade" list here. I sent a message to someone and within a day they were in the mail. Although it wasn't as many tokens as you need, but I am confident that someone listing parts for trade will be willing to send you what you need.

Thread: PDF of the tokens anywhere?

Does anyone know of a PDF with the tokens floating around on the net? I got my copy out tonight and I don't have any of the blue tokens. I am also missing a few of the red and yellow tokens, so it would be nice if I could get a pdf orr something.

I checked gamepart.com and they don't have the tokens, just the plastic pieces.

Thanks!

Thread: Number of cards in Partisan Deck?

I blew off the dust of this classic AT game. I feel all of the plastic components are intake however the deck of cards was strewn everywhere in the box. One has some damage, but nothing awful.

I was just wondering does anyone know how many cards are supposed to be in the Partisan Deck? I look in the rulebook and found the component list, but it doesn't inform about the number of cards.

I'm also wondering about possibly trading this classic....... I've never done it before, but the game is in pretty good shape. The box has some damage, but the important stuff is all assembled, expect possibly the cards. Nonetheless, I'm not missing many if any..

Thanks for any possible information.

Randall

Yes, I realize they are just 6 sided dice, but the ones that come with the game have no pips, but actual numbers. If someone has some extras, I would be interested in acquiring them. Thanks for your time.

Except Cantatta is completely wrong. There is a slight bias towards the invaders. For a group that plays online, the invaders win about 57% of the time.

You are certainly intitled to your opinion, as I am to mine, and that is all I offered. Saying I'm completely wrong is a bit of an obsolute, don't ya think? Whatever... the game isn't worth the effort to argue about it, IMHO.

Instead of requiring the invaders to capture 18 cities, simply require them to capture 16 or 17. Whenever I have seen the invaders lose, they almost always lose by only 1 city.
16 cities?! TOO SCRIPTED.

I love the mechanism in FA where the defender fires and inflicts damage FIRST!!!! Plus each unit uses its specific "attack" die. More powerful units have a better chance at a kill. Everyone needs a 5, but when units are uses d6,d8, and d10 it changes it up a bit.

Game is designed well and gives a feeling of foreboding when your last wave of reinforcements come on.

Take it from a prior owner of said game (I traded both my copies here on BGG), who has played it enough to know.

The theme is good no doubt, and for the first 5-6 plays it seemes fairly balanced, but that doesn't last long.
At first, when saw this thread, I thought that the space was not next to the coast this was based on geographical knowledge. However, the more I think about it, why would they put that little handle that jets out towards the ocean? Or even include the space at all if it did not touch the coast. It feels like it i supposed to touch the invasion zone.

While we'd always played that those were adjacent to "Invasion Zones" since they BORDER upon such, according to the map as shown, and also according to the descriptions with examples for these on Page 6 under "Adjacencies", where it explicitly denotes this with that. In a couple of examples on Pages 13 & 20, then a LINE has been drawn extending it as well, to delineate where "I.Z.s-4 & 5" are further separated, so that 'Units' in "I.Z.-5" aren't able to be adjacent to the LAND space in "I.Z.-4". As for the "New Mexico" area 2 spaces to the EAST of "Phoenix", it doesn't have or denote a "terminus point" to preclude it being adjacent, while instead there is a small portion of which does include it as such abutting the "I.Z.". Also, the Southern Invader's 2 furthest EAST "I.Z."s aren't adjacent to one another, as they are separated by the 'point' of "Texas".

Thread: Re: San Joaquin Valley

I haven't played FA in years, but I recall that our group always played the San Joaquin Valley as inland, and we played that the space two spaces to the East of Phonix did not touch the invasion zone.

We reasoned that if the developer really wanted to allow movement between these areas why didn't he move the lines slightly? Also the boarder lines are very thick and the amount of space touching was the size of the boarder. Third, due to the physical limitations of both, we just couldn't see whole armies marching single file (or ships going under the Golden Gate bridge, wtihout being fired upon by units in SF). And last, we thought the US player could use a little help.

Our games were always well balanced, so it worked out well.

Thread: Interesting idea for adding a 5th player in the middle east.

I have been thinking about this game for the past 6 months since I got it for $15 on craigslist. Anyway the game is almost perfectly balanced and you can tell it was play tested very well. It almost always plays out that the Americans are sweating up until the very end. And I love the cards, specifically the text. "N.R.A. member come from the hills..." Anyway, the more I thought about the game the more I (naturally) wanted to add to it. The first thing that came to my mind was adding a 5th player. But how? Canada attacking America isn't fun or very different that what is presented.

So then I had this brilliant idea of adding the Middle east. It updates the game a little bit due to the current situation over there. So what I was thinking is something along the lines of this. (Bare with me since this is all just pure speculation.)

Fortress America: W/ Middle east expansion
Saudi Arabia and Iran combine forces and decide to take advantage of the recent socialist revolution and attack on America by attacking America's foreign interest and oil supply in the newest American territory, Iraq. Israel (on behalf of America) quickly neutralizes Syria, Jordan and Lebanon. Turkey remains neutral . Now that the tide of red socialists are knocking on Americas front doorstep protecting the lifeblood of war , oil, is a must.

-In addition to the normal game. A new smaller board is places next to the main board. The smaller board is just the country of Iraq. Obviously There would need to be a new color and some extra units for America.
-Baghdad is a city and acts like a city for laser placement and victory conditions.
-The Global Liberation Army or GLA (Shamelessly stolen from Command & Conquer :laugh represents Saudi Arabia and Iran. These countries have no hover tanks or jets to place. But their infantry always act like partisans (if alone they role a d8).
-The GLA takes their turn after the Americans. (Making them go last)
-Americans can use their Partisans cards normally or place the troops in Baghdad.
-The GLA has a limited number of forces like the other attacking players. Except that every turn they can put 2 infantry back into their reinforcements.
-I want to add some kind of bonus for keeping the oil fields in Iraq that really helps the American player. One Idea: For every 3 oil field held in Iraq, the Americans get an extra partisan card per turn.
-As expected if the GLA can take and hold Baghdad, the attacking player gets a bonus. Some idea I had was that if the GLA controls Baghdad, Americans cannot use their lasers.

Some additional ideas and thoughts.
-If the GLA defeats all of the forces in Iraq, then they may place their units in any invasion zone on the main board.
-Any of the invading players may place pieces in the GLA's invasion zones.
-Obviously the GLA would be at a huge disadvantage against the other attacking players since there is only one city in Iraq.Im not sure what to do bout this.
Why would anybody expect a real historical precedent for a dark future game about a point in time that's already passed? All I am saying is that if Fortress America was reprinted today, the plot would be set in the future and based on alternate history. This is just something I cannot see Hasbro printing. Maybe a game with one of the factors, but not both.

In the original it was not the USSR but the European Socialists (or something like that); The Eastern Invaders are the Euro-Socialist Pact, which was the result of the USSR invading Western Europe.

It's pure fantasy, and perhaps that lends to its continued popularity over 20 years after publication. A Soviet invasion of Western Europe never materialized, but a "What If" about three loosely-defined, regionally-based military coalitions is timeless.

The idea was first published in SPI's Invasion America, but with a few differences that tended to extend the gamelength.

1) The mapsheet included Canada, the continental US, the Caribbean, and most of Mexico, which has been annexed by the US prior to game start. (Two full mapsheets)

2) The game is hexes and counters vice area movement. Various types of terrain.

3) The 3 attacking Coalitions have distinct force mixes, including navies. The Europeans have aircraft carriers and lots of armored and mech corps, the Asians have massive (but slow) assault units and hovercraft, etc.

4) Airpower is represented by Close Air Support (CAS) and Long Range Bombers (LRB).

5) Canadian units and militia fight alongside the US.

I've played a couple of times, and I think it's an excellent game. The 3-on-1 wargame concept is interesting, especially the way it's done here with the asymmetric reinforcement styles as well. Also, it's a pretty streamlined game, despite its age. I think it'd do well on the market today. I could see some tweaks to US reinforcements - maybe choose two cards from a hand of 5 or something.

This reminds me...I should check out Friedrich again...

I can't reallly account for Matt's reason behind wanting a copy, but I like it because, of the whole MB GM series, this one plays the best. Play moves at a reasonable pace, there is enough strategy to keep me engaged and enough chaos to ensure there is no perfect strategy. But the best thing about FA is the manner in which play is balanced despite it being asymmetric.

Read my review of the game and you'll see why:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/160286
I know that speed is the key to the Asian Peoples Alliance, and nothing is more annoying than not taking a city because you could not kill one more infantry when you rolled to attack.

As Pete said, Yellow can bypass American cities in the early turns. America (usually) cannot form a decent line in the West. There will either be gaps that Yellow can rush through, or the line will be very weak, allowing Yellow to attack it directly without having to surround it on two or more sides first. The cities, which probably will be defended, can be surrounded as Yellow moves further inland, and then Yellow can attack at his leisure from three or more territories when he has the strength to do so.

I would, as Yellow, use the first two bombers as much as I could. And if I lost them early I would probably replace them, or at least one of them (again, depending on how well America has managed to reinforce the western front). But generally I would try to save a bombers for the mid to late game.

As I recall, when I played Yellow, I usually brought out a lot of my "weak" troops early (Infantry and Mech units) to help strengthen my supply lines. That is what I remember as Yellow's biggest problem: defending his supply line from being cut. As I recall, I would bring out 2 or 3 "good" units per turn to reinforce whatever I lost at the front lines, and the rest would be weaker units that would form a double column for my supply.

Thread: Re: When to play bombers?

It's been awhile since I played, and my answer would depend in part on how America was doing, but in general I would answer as follows:

Red, and perhaps Blue, should get their bombers into play as soon as possible. Red has a lot of American troops to fight, and the bombers are his best bet to achieve the numerical superiority he needs to defeat the defenders. Granted, he will probably lose them by game end, but Red's goal is to break the Eastern American line as soon as possible and then spread into the North-eastern cities. Red's best chance of doing this is early in the game before America can start wearing down his force with lasers.

Yellow, on the other hand, usually faces less resistance in the beginning. That invader is more focused on taking as much land as possible, hopefully getting to Denver and beyond to the great lakes area. Since there is less resistance, Yellow can afford to save her bombers until end game. This will hopefully (from Yellow's perspective) cause America to focus her lasers on Red or Blue in the early game, increasing Yellow's chance of getting to the Great Lakes area.

Blue strategy is probably closer to Red's than Yellow's. Although he won't have as many American defenders to face as Red (typically), it is still probably better to bring out the bombers early.

Again, this in part depends on America's initial set up, the cards America gets for reinforcements, and how well the invaders do doing the first turn or two.

Also, though I doubt this needs to be said here, but ALWAYS group your bombers together at the end of your turn. Don't allow the American's to take multiple shots at your bombers with her lasers.

We were trying to figure out when the invaders should play their bombers. I was yellow and played my bombers as soon as possible so they could inflict the most damage throughout the game. My friend was red and waited until the last reinforcement phase to play his bombers so that he could have the maximum amount of bombers for the end game. This made sense, because I only had three bombers left by the time he deployed his bombers. Unfortunately, America forfeited one turn after our last reinforcement phase, so we did not get to see either strategy completely pan out.

So what do y'all think? Is it smart to play your bombers near the beginning, near the end, or just evenly distribute them throughout the game? Does it depend on what invader you are?
