Thread: A Relic of a Bygone Era

The 80's was a good era for boardgames but this game was far from one of the classics. A cheap tie-in for a TV/Comics liscence (seldom the sign of a good game!) this is just a roll and move concept game with one or two basic changes to the rules

The Swamp Thing liscence is based on the superb, gothic and moody comic strip (espc when Alan Moore was writing it) allthough the artwork is all quite colorful and aimed at kids so I would guess it spans from the days of the old-school TV cartoon.

The game asks each player (controlling just a pawn rather than a model Swamp Thing, for shame!) must move through the bayou to fight Dr Arcane. This means that each turn you choose a card with a value btween 1-6 and move that many spaces. Then draw a new card. There are some spaces that means you take a "hero" card which allows the player to add 1 to a later dice roll, some that hold the player up and some that require a dice roll to move on.

There are other routes you can take but really its not a complex game, its just a slightly less linear snakes and ladders with card's rather than dice. Then the "climatic" final battle is just a case of "roll a 6 to win".

What Can I say? Its just a simple roll and move game based on an obscure liscence that does NOTHING to get across the mood of the comic. Its nothing special but took only 20 minutes to get the game finished.

I wont be giving this game a score but it was quite amusing for 20 minutes....
