Living in Wales as I do, it's always nice to see games that actually feature Wales as a seperate location from England. Doesn't happen very often, but then I suppose we are a bit small and insignificant. Here's the few games in my collection that actually do this.

The best example I could come up with of Wales featuring in a boardgame. Look, we even get our own army! And the incentive to cross the border and burn York! Although I reckon it should really have been Hereford - in almost every Welsh uprising, Hereford seemed to get burnt. Apparently it's still legal to shoot a Welshman with a longbow in Hereford

I have recently started work on a Brit-like game that is the history of Wales (including "West Wales", that is, Cornwall and Devon). I'm a considerable distance from outside playtesting, but if you're interested you can contact me.

I think it's only legal to shoot welshmen if we are within crossbow range of Hereford cathedral. I can't remember where I heard that, at work in Worcestershire I think. Given the bult-up nature of the town centre that makes it pretty safe to go through on the by-pass or by rail. The centre is semi-pedestrianised but Brekon bus used to go past the Cathedral front on the way out of town, so probably best to sit on the Driver's side for added cover.

That's only half right - it's compulsory to shoot Welshmen in Hereford, except on a Sunday (got to let them go to church).

So close, and yet so far:

Not many people know this but Torres was originally designed around the King Arthur legend, but when the publishers weren't interested it got re-themed to Welsh castles (principally those in Gwynedd).

Unfortunately, the publishers didn't like this either, and decided to go with a Spanish theme.

I've heard that Knizia's Taj Mahal was originally set in Wales too and was to be about the Norman pacification until the publisher decided it had been too long since there had been a game on India.

I had a nice time driving across Wales once -- very scenic.

As far as I know, the people that came to be known as the Welsh were gradually pushed westwards by the invading Saxons. Apart from in Wales itself, the celts held out for the longest in Devon and Cornwall. I guess that's where the language similarity comes from?

I'm sure I remember reading somewhere that there was a Welsh kingdom that held out for a suprisingly long time in the very north of England / south of Scotland. I've got a feeling in was Strathclyde, which was called something like Ystrad Clwyd, although I might have completely made that up. My memory of Welsh history is a bit hazey.

I think Cumbria was the last Celtic-speaking part of northern England, but became anglicised in the Middle Ages. Relics of the language have been detected, however, namely words used by shepherds until relatively recently to count their flocks.

Mabinogion should be available, self-published via The Game Crafter, very soon. I'll post more details as soon as I have them.

Incidentally, the names of the cantrefi and the routes of the Roman roads on the board are authentic circa 1100AD.

Yea. I can understand being left off some maps. Proud as I am, Wales didn't necessarily have a major contribution to make to every little bit of world history.

Some maps though, seem to leave Wales off just for the hell of it. I mean, take this picture, it's off the cover of the 2004 European Union book of statistics (Eurostat 2004).

Charming.

They can't even blame it on global warming. The Welsh mountains will be sticking out of the sea long after London and the South East are lost beneath the waves.
