I'm sure that there are alot of games that people rate alot higher than you. You despise the game and bring it up in every list that you can.

What about the games that aren't so well accepted? You love them and many groups just don't get it.
Here is your chance to champion that game that most people seem to be indifferent about or just plain don't like.

What are we missing?

A great story-telling game, possibly dissed because it needs the right people to make it work. Another factor: the original version of the game had the card names down the left hand side and was much better to play with than the later, prettier version.

My coments about this game are pretty succinct "Very good game with lots of chrome if you wish. Innovative use of Ops Points instead of movement/combat phases." It is a really good fluid system. I found it to be an ideal tactical simulation for modern war. It covers both your basic Sov/US combatants as well as UK, German, IDF, French, and Syrian forces. You could probably add more yourself with a little work. Also the system involved both players so you don't have much downtime waiting for the other person to finish their turn.

It's a very clever game.

It's about bidding. To get the bottles you need, you have to position your bid right after the bidder that puts those bottles in his bid.

It's about bluffing. You have to convince other players that you want something else. Otherwise they will try to stop you from getting those precious bottles you need.

It's about hand management. You must have some low priced bottles in your hand so you can use them in bidding - to fine tune your bid. But low priced bottles don't bring many points. So balance is important in your hand - expensive bottles make you inefficient in bidding, cheap bottles improve that but give you few points.

It's about set collection. If you manage to gather three bottles of same colour or (even better) three identical bottles and if you manage to put them together in your wine cellar - you score big bonus.

It's about wine. Na zdrowie!

As a 14-year-old it was immediately apparent that this title was very much in touch with its subject material. The game is redolent with the smell of old nazis and in that area most other games dealing with the subject fall a very long way short indeed. Today it suggests possibilities that some would be keen to suppress. The title and supposed goal of the game is something of a code for something else, as the actual assassination of Hitler isn't and would not have been directly significant to the long-term struggle between the Army and Abwehr on one hand and the SS and nazi party on the other. This game lights the path to a true political game, with violence: otherwise you are left with Diplomacy-style bullshit. However very few if any designers know or understand WW2 well enough to appreciate this game, let alone the potential players.

Not a huge difference, I admit, but it is a game I can tell I will enjoy more if I got to play it more. The big hurdle is learning what the pieces do, since their powers are not printed on them (which would be impossible, given their size). Normally I don't enjoy having to do something like that, but something about Stratego:Legends just grabs me and makes me willing to put in the effort. My friend is as well, we just don't get much opportunity to do so.

Falling is an extremely misunderstood game. I'll wager that most of the people who diss it have never played the game properly, or with a well-heeled dealer. Or maybe they just don't like real time games. This is still the second-best two-minute game ever, after its younger sibling, the fantastic Brawl.

I've popped up and said some nice things in defense of this on the 'geek more than I care to recall. In terms of 'what are the rest of us missing?', what I'd say is that it is easily played by children, so most people remember it as a children's game, unaware of its potential as a deeper deduction game.

I have Clue - The Card Game (think Clue without the board), and have actually been able to get gamers to play it, to generally favorable results.

Try it again for the first time.

I gave this one an 8. All in all, I'm not partial to abstracts, but this one is good. Pieces are put at the corners or points of squares and triangles. You move any of your 15 pieces one space along the board. If you control all 3 points of a triangle, you can move one of your opponent's pieces. If you control all 4 points of a square, you can move two of your opponent's pieces. You win by controlling all 6 points of a hex of your color or all 6 points of one of the white hexes in the middle. The ability to move your opponent's piece to the least advantageous spot on the board makes this a fun game. If you get in a rut, it can be impossible to come back. Those games end quickly. I suppose 2 even players playing defensively could drag on. Chess can drag on, too. I don't see that as being a valid reason for this game to rate so low.

My favorite of J. Earnest's real-time card games. You have to rely on lightning fast recognition skills while still following some basic order-of-operations rules in this incredibly fast-paced game of future sport. It's incredibly tense and chaotic. I rate it a 9.0 -- I'll never turn down an opportunity to play, or defend my current 17-0 win record.

If you realize that one of the players just doesn't have "the knack" for this sort of game, though, I've got a feeling it may never work well for them.

Chinese Checkers is a very addicting game when played with the variant that a marble can jump over one or more marbles per jump (instead of just one). With this variant, you don't get the inevitable traffic jams that gather around the center of the board. Instead, a cluttered center makes the game move more quickly.

My family calls this variant Horserace Chinese Checkers.

It's usually very difficult to rope someone in to play a game, but once they try the game using the variant, they often ask to play again.

(I'd recommend trying this variant if you haven't already done so. It almost gives the game a Ricochet Robot feel.)

Just a tad behind Elchfest in the BGG ratings, I rate this game an 8. It's an easier storytelling game to get into than Once Upon a Time, and you don't have the problem of one big wending story and people freezing up when it comes to their turn. Instead, everyone puts together a short story (it is called *nano*fictionary, after all).

People who finish putting their cards together fastest get more points (counting down from the number of players in the game). But people who put together the best stories also get points, naturally. (You can't vote for yourself, so people do vote for the best stories, unless they are over-competetive kingmakers, who tend to ruin any game anyways.)

But not many people like storytelling games on the 'Geek.

No question here. The average rating for this quirky card game is just under 6. I rate it a 10, as do my GMtB! compatriots Ravsitar and Jagsaw. Between the 3 of us, we've logged over 600 games on the 'Geek since we started logging games 8 months ago.

What's the deal with this game? Well, it plays GREAT with 3 players. And 2-player works almost as well. For more details, you can read my review of it, but it's one of those games where the more familiar you are with the deck, the better it is. It's fast and furious -- especially with 3 players (not recommended for more than 4) -- and yes there's luck in the card draw and the die roll, but that's all part of the fun and the strategy.

A light game that my family has injoyed since we where very young. This is probubly the first game I learned to play. Every decade or so we buy a new copy as the old one is worn out or pieces lost. This game still gets more than a dozen plays a year around my place.
It is placed gentally next to Puerto Rico, Tikal, TI3, and Betrayal in our "most played" area of the shelf. Recently other members of my family have bought their own copies as we span out across Ontario.
We just love this game.

As my own distinct addition to this list I offer up King of the Elves. I've not played Elfenland so I can't make any comparisons that way but I do know that while Puerto Rico and San Juan have the same mechanic, they both offer a level of enjoyment and sometimes you want to play one over the other. From reading the ratings on this game I think too many people rated it as a comparison rather than a stand alone game. It's quite a lot of fun.

This game doesn't have a bad rating on the geek - but i do think it is underated - it can work as a filler, but it is better than that - the tension is nail biting! - it is easy to pass off as being a silly game because it has all of 2 and 1/2 rules, and the premise is so obvious, but you would be wrong! It can discourage players because the winner goes in streaks do to rebalancing of strategies - its always in my top 10 hot list!

I know this game isn't one of the worst rated, but I often hear a lot of negativity towards it. Most likely because it's too "Faidutti-ish" for most people (chaos, randomness, etc). I like it for its player interaction and small moments of intensity. A wonderful way to end a gaming session.
