I'm sure that there are alot of games that people rate alot higher than you. You despise the game and bring it up in every list that you can.

What about the games that aren't so well accepted? You love them and many groups just don't get it.
Here is your chance to champion that game that most people seem to be indifferent about or just plain don't like.

What are we missing?

Other games I still like--Elric, Mosby's Raiders, and Tokyo Express, to name but a few--I can understand. Not everyone would like Elric's randomness, or Tokyo Express' complexity.

But Glory definitely does not deserve a 6.30 average rating. I'm often less than thrilled with Richard Berg's designs, but I smell a bit of gratuitous Berg-bashing here. Glory is a great game. No, it does not have every detail that an American Civil War aficianado might want, but it succeeds both as (a) a reasonable enough simulation of three Civil War battles, and (b) an enjoyable, playable game.

Makes a really good game in teams, especially couples.

Conspiracy
aka The Sigma File
aka Casablanca
aka Dossier
aka Agent

This one came up with the biggest difference between my rating and the BGG average.

My Rating: 9
BGG Average: 6.24

My first encounter with this game was back in the 70's under the name The Sigma File. I don't recall the particular details of the games we played, but I have a strong memory of playing this with my Dad, and a couple of family friends.

I have since played this as an adult, and I love it. It has a great element of bluffing, and working with limited resources. Trying to outwit my wife and cause her to waste money on an agent I am about to assassinate is great fun. The sinking feeling I get when I realise that she has just done the same to me on a different agent is classic.

It's an oldie, and you could probably pick one up for a fair price on ebay. Give it a try if you can. You may be surprised.

This little card game is practically a no brainer but it's a really nice filler that even allows me to play with my mom without having to get out the Uno set. The only thing I don't like too much is the amount of writing down points and adding them, but hey, that little exercise helps my grey mind-calculus cells to get off their lazy asses from time to time.

And please, permit me to add yet another game with a similar margin between my and BGG rating: Mancala.

This one suffers from the bad reputation traditional and abstract games have here at this site. I'm not a huge fan of abstracts as a whole either, but:

it is simple and can be teached even to small children
it plays fast
it needs much experience to play it well
it is not an abstract that is generally taken too seriously (like Chess or Go)
there are hundreds of variants out there, different rules, different number of beans, different numbers of bins...
Mancala is a world of it own.

This is a great abstract with cute components. It's simple enough that my kids played it when they were four (with face up goal cards), but can be a brainburner with "serious" gamers.

Not sure why it's not well regarded. My only quibble with the game is that the donkeys fall over easily.

Currently, Supremacy has an average rating of 5.14, but it's also one of my favourite games to play. It takes a lot of criticism, especially for its unrealistic economic system, but I got a lot of fun out of this game during my teenage years.

What are people missing? Well, what I really liked about it was the openness of how you played the game. In many ways, it's a lot like Diplomacy, in that the real joy of the game is in making allies and enemies, and backstabbing your friends. You could stockpile nuclear weapons and then let fly. You could play the diplomatic game and leech off others' successes. You could build up your armies and invade your opponents' territories.

While far from perfect, I love it for what it is.

I broke my ratings down in 5 buckets, 6 - 10, and looked at the biggest difference with BGG in each bucket:

10: Viceroys 6.13
Aww, its color and ideas more than make up for its length and lack of great bits.

9: Lunatix Loop 5.94
I think people don't realize that they can win the race even when they seem well back at the last lap.

8: Lords of the Sierra Madre 5.85
It's a little work, but I can understand the rules and it's well worth it for a game with this much color and rarity of topic.

7: Barbarians 4.71
I think grognards have this idea of what an ancient war game must be like, but this had great huge maps, a plethora of scenarios you don't find elsewhere and an easy to use system. Plus, it didn't get the usual 3W label since they were filing for bankruptcy and thus is the only game published under the KP (Keith Poulter) monicker.

6: Tie: Alibi (Adlung), Smart 5.00
It's at this level that a lot of my ratings are lower than those of BGG, but these were two pretty good games that deserve better than their ratings.

See my site for more info on all of these -- http://spotlightongames.com -- thanks for the cute list.

My game comment:
"Most people either love or hate blind bidding - I happen to love it. This game plays very quick, even more so than High Society. Tough decisions on how much to bid, and even a slight negotiation aspect. It *is* difficult to stay afloat, however this is what makes the game great. It has been noted that in many cases doing absoultely *nothing* will often make you end up with more money than those who enter into the bidding...true, but you can't *make* money without risking money. Not exactly a bottom-tier rating, but I think this game gets a bad rating from many players because of it's clunky battle system. To those people I say, "This is not a war game, it's a resource management game!" Yes, you can attack your opponents, but it's not usually to your benefit (resource wise) to do so. Attacking should be reserved for preventing someone else from achieving a win condition.

There are many available actions and several win conditions. The bits are beautiful, and the game normally moves quickly from player to player (except for the aforementioned battles). If you're up for a 3+ hour strategy/resource management game, give this one (another) try.

Play with 3 players only, or two teams of 2. This is not a good 2-player game, and it can take forever with more than 4.

I've enjoyed this in many ways over the years and although it isn't difficult once it's mastered a lot of fun can be had.
My wife and I even embarked (in our student days) on creating a 'Giant Guess who?' inventing characters and their attributes (we had a lot of time and little money); in fact it's where I got my username from...

i suppose it goes without saying many of these type games should be on a list like this: Risk, Sorry!, Life. all those mass produced family games that we enjoyed before the likes of Catan and Ticket to Ride were looming household words.

It's easier to get a group to play any game that has a dragon on the box than just about any money game (except the dreaded Monopoly). Stock market games are the unloved step-children of money games. They are too abstract for children and trigger too many frightening memories for adults.

Most stock market simulations are based on 100% random fluctuations in market price (thus reflecting their authors understanding of economics). You might as well invest everything in Striker Drilling and wait for it to hit. The Stock Market Game is the only game I can think of where buying stock makes the price go up. What a concept!

My rating (7) is not terribly different from the BGG rating, but I suspect it's going to increase soon. I'm thinking about the game frequently so the signs are there, right?

Andromeda gets a bad rap because it looks like a light family game (with set collection, the cosmic ashtray, the colourful board), but it also includes some very unfriendly mechanics aimed at gamers (forced trading, area majority, a technology track, action shortage). It also takes a few games to get a handle on what constitutes good play.

If you can get past the luck (or better still 'see' the binomial probability distribution) of the cosmic ashtray, and you are happy to screw everyone in the trading, this a solid gamer's game.

I love this oft-maligned game.I can't help but enjoy the thrill of survival in a town teeming with corpses intent on devouring you. The most common complaint I've read is that it drags on too long with little action. I played with the core set, and the largest expansion( Zombies 4) together and I had a blast, though I played it all by my lonesome.

My group loves this one. We have been playing it for years. Yeah its luck driven and sure sometimes you just take a really one-sided whipping but nobody seems to mind. We just play again! Besides there is nothing like coming back from a beating to somehow pull out the win! In the right group it's a great beer and pretzel game.
