The one that started it all. Five battles from the English Civil War 1642-1646. GMT published a polished version of the DTP game of the same name. The DTP version had 2 different battles and the GMT version added one the DTP game did not have. Now one of the originals - Cheriton is appearing in GMTs magazine C3i #17

This is a great game: a fun challenge with just the right amount of tactical detail, plus a very colorful period of history that doesn't get the amount of gaming attention it deserves. Well done, Ben.

With the exception of Nördlingen, these battles had never been gamed before. Lots of excellent situations overshadowed by Gustavus Adolphus and the Grand Condé.

Thanks, Mark Simonitch did a great job of using color. Knut Gruenitz did much of the map design and layout and Mark Siomonitch took those prototypes to produce the ones for the game.

It has been 10 years since GMT did Lion of the North with two battles of Gustavus Adolphus - Gustav Adolf in Swedish/German. This will cover that ground and add three more battles. Based on the latest scholarship, you will see a different take on the famous battles. We are including two battles from the Polish War to see Gustav Adolf earlier in his career.

I´ll probable pre-order this one. I´m very happy to see actual Swedish and German names in this one and in Sweden Fights on. Hint: you could also use this system for the wars between Sweden and Denmark in the 2nd half of the 17th century... :)

This is a superb game. A good selection/mixture of battles, some interesting new rules for the Polish battles, beautiful counters and maps. I'll play this one again and again and look forward to more games in the series.

I just picked up a copy of this in a trade - my first Musket & Pike game - and I'm curious what people suggest as a first scenario to dive into with this game?

As background, I've played quite a few wargames, but most of my tactical gaming experience has been WWII (CC:E, Conflict of Heroes, etc.). So, I don't really have a good idea where to start with this game (and with this series - but this is the one I've got, so lets start here ;).

Thanks!

This is the Vae Victis little brother to the more involved GMT series. Two battles from the Wars of Religion in France, Dreux 1562 and Ivry 1590. This will soon be joined by Moncontour in an upcoming Vae Victis issue. A much simpler fast playing battle game, but with enough detail to gain some insight into the difference between this and other periods.

I looked at doing White Mountain and some fantastic scholarship has been done in Czech on Bila Hora. It looked as though the only way to make the Bohemian player have a chance would be to make the Hungarians more active than they were historically. The Imperial-Catholic League army enjoyed a significant qualitative advantage in the early war period. Time worked against them, as time passed the Protestants got better and the Imperial-Catholic League suffered from attrition

I imagine so. White Mountain would probably end up being something like SPI's Agincourt. A great simulation but a very poor game. That is no fun for the side that gets sent to the killing floor. But loads of fun for the side with the hammer.

In fact, the Imperial-Catholic League superiority was such that each of the major early war battles we have looked at for possible inclusion had very poor balance. A "Great Battles of Tilly" would have many one sided fights, as Tilly was an excellent commander, beloved by his men. A good strategist and campaigner as well.

I have the game and have played 3 times...it is worth getting for fans of the era....it is very similar to 30 yrs war quad with a few different twists....not a bloody game...very hard to destroy any untis at all..a real slow paced game ...but suits the era perfectly great counters too

From GMT's site:

This volume features several pivotal battles in Baltic region of the late 17th century - a period where rulers struggled to centralize power in their realms, and to introduce permanent standing armies instead of expensive mercenary forces. It shows the highly trained and well led army of Sweden struggling to defend its massive gains from the Thirty Years War and the Northern Wars of 1655-1661 against the forces of Denmark and Brandenburg, reinforced by contingents from Austria, the United Provinces, Münster, Hesse-Kassel and Poland.

Nearly all the scenarios in this module are smaller than the typical Musket & Pike scenario, and thus take less time and space to play. For the same reasons it is a great introductory game to the series.

Again, I just think it's great when good wargame designers (and publishers) devote attention and resources to new or, at the best, rarely gamed military campaigns ... the 17th century is one of the last great under-explored areas of tactical wargaming. And such an interesting challenge, given the broad variety of the combat units involved.

Good question!

First off there was four echelons of command from lowest to highest: Company, Regiment, Wing and Army. When deployed on the battlefield the Companies rarely acted alone, they were part of a battlefield formation called a squadron for cavalry and a battalion for infantry. A regiment could form one or two squadrons/battalions or if too small could be brigaded with other small regiments to form a single squadron/battalion.

The Captains and Colonels controlled the actions of the squadrons and battalions and in the game these units are the maneuver elements. Their actions are covered in the actions those units take, and their limitations. There was a good deal of cohesion at the regimental level and it was not uncommon for one or two regiments to keep soldiering on after all others had broken. Because of this there is no Army Rout Levels like some other games.

The next two echelons of command are the Wing and Army command, these are represented with leader counters. Each is treated differently. A Wing Commander (WC) controls the squadrons and/or battalions assigned to his wing. This is done through one of four orders (Charge, Make Ready, Receive Charge and Rally). An army normally has 3 or 4 wings. Communicating these commands was via trumpet and drum signals or personal request by the WC to a Colonel. Thus changing orders can be difficult. Each order type has a different set of limitations

The Army Commander (AC) functions in a different role. The WCs maneuver the elements but the AC can attempt to influence them to change their order, or keep going. The AC may also rally units that the WC is too busy to worry about. This function was very useful in sustaining a difficult attack or stiffening a defense.

A good deal of how the Musket & Pike Battles Series works deals with how Wings and Command operate. I tried to incorporate as much as possible from the primary source documents on how a battle was fought and how the commanders functioned.

Was not battlefield desertion by largely mercenary forces also an issue that generals had to face during this time. I cannot remember if that was specific to any of the battles covered in these games. I believe at Breitenfeld the Saxons basically fled the field en masse but that was (again if I remember correctly) mostly a national force and not a mercenary one. Are there any rules in the games for bribing Mansfeld-esque mercenary commanders to neutralize them? Just sort of wondering out loud.

In the mid to later war the mercenary units were long term service unit for the most part and were not particularly vulnerable to conversion. The biggest defection was in 1635 when Duke Bernhard of Saxe-Weimar took his corps from Swedish to French service, thought the Sedes and French were on the same side ostensibly it did create a good bit of acrimony. Many attempted to return to Swedish service at the end of the war, but very few made it.

The Saxons at Breitenfeld were very green, having been raised for the most part with 60 days of the battle. The latest scholarship indicates that they did as well as could be expected and Gustav Adolf was complimentary of their performance. They played a very important role in forcing Tilly to deploy on a grand frontage that spread him thin. They also neutralized Gen Fuerstenburg on Tilly's right, those regiments involved in putting the Saxons to flight never rallies and reorganized to help Tilly deal with the Swedes.
