1/14/12 was our scheduled weekly game night. We started off with Crappy Birthday which everyone was loving. They wanted seconds but I insisted we go on to something else. We played Mystery of the Abbey which I nor anyone else had played before and I think for the most part everyone enjoyed it. That game took forever. Analysis paralysis dragged the game on for probably 2 hours. It was grueling. To wind down we played some Bohnanza. Good times

1/15/12 was an impromptu game night. We managed only to get in one game of Ticket to Ride Map Collection: Volume 1 – Team Asia & Legendary Asia, Legendary Asia map. A great weekend of gaming. Looking forward to getting Risk Legacy on the table for next week

Three of us played Hamburgum, which was a close game between the two leaders. We enjoyed Flash Point: Fire Rescue and we won on the beginners' rules. The highlight of the evening was a 2-hour game of Chicago Express. We also used the Erie expansion. Since reading the comments here on the Geek, I can see why the game took so long, but it was great fun. Two of us tied and the third was only two points down!

Got this in a shipment for Amazon last week and my wife and I tried it out this weekend. Great game for while in front of the TV watching a movie or catching up on DVR as it plays pretty quick and minimal set up or complex rules.

This one just arrived on Friday. So my oldest son and I played a learning game Friday and Saturday with a "dummy" 3rd player (the dummy won). With 4 rounds, we were able to learn from our mistakes in the rules, so we could play it correctly with my middle son on Sunday (still not finished—one round to go).

The boys played Runebound (Second Edition) by themselves Saturday and Sunday. And my oldest and I played A Few Acres of Snow Sunday afternoon.

100% Martin Wallace (and we didn't even play Discworld, which I wanted to).

Through the Ages: A Story of Civilization saw the most plays at three, spread out over the weekend. I smacked down Michelangelo three times, twice he was evev coupled with St.Peters ....
I decided to try and science it out for one of the games, in the third age I sat at 40 science while all the leaders, wonders, governments, military and action cards paraded through the card row .... seriously my wife was laughing at me, no buildings, the mine or farm or blue techs started showing until the bottom third of the deck, I sat at 40 for at least three turns, I bet I gave away 48 (maybe more) science points, cause I had nothing to spend them on. This ended up the closest game with my four point win. The others were both around 20 pointers.

An impromtu gathering Frday saw Innovation hit the tabe and my first win vs. my Innovation nemesis .... look out Mike, I am on a roll!

Closed down Friday with a game of Shipyard, I had not played it for awhile, I enjoyed it, and lost horribly. I am going to try and bring it up more often. The impromptu gathering was cut short as my kids decided to "make" charcoal to draw with, the process involved a candle, toothpicks and a pencil, it ended with a smoke alarm and a few cry . On the bright side, their rooms have never been cleaner ....

Sunday I played a five player game of Sid Meier's Civilization: The Board Game, with the Sid Meier's Civilization: The Board Game – Fame and Fortune expansion. It was my second play and first with the expansion, I may add it to the wishlist, I like it but it is too long to play regularly ....

SO GLAD I've found a game that works with this group. We played 5 games throughout the course of the night, 3p each. I won 2 out of 5, my grandmother won the rest.

Ninjato arrived on Friday, so we got a couple of 2-player games in this weekend. They were learning games, and I won via two lop-sided victories (very strange as my GF usually DESTROYS me in learning games). We also played a couple games of Mr. Jack.

Games night was Thursday, and we played Kill Doctor Lucky and 7 Wonders. We were supposed to have seven players and more time (to play longer games), but a two-day-long blizzard made everybody late and prevented one couple from arriving at all.

Catan: Cities & Knights-I hadn't played this one in quite some time. I won a three player game that was very close.

Acquire- Another one I haven't played in a while. I can never seem to win this one. Always come up a little short.

A couple more games of The Resistance, this time 6-player. In 5 games the Resistance fighters have never won. It seems very hard for them to do so. It's a pretty fun game, but I've never been a huge fan/proponent of Mafia/Werewolf, so I think this will quickly overstay its welcome. My wife and I discussed it, and we both like Saboteur better because there is something else going on besides the baseless accusations. The board play of the game lends some structure to an otherwise pretty amorphous psychodrama. But The Resistance is probably good for a few more plays.

We also had quick games of Gem Dealer and SET.

Settlers with 2 expansions from Traders & Barbarians - the rivers and the fishermen. It was a 5-player game. I started out strong mostly due to other players picking not so great starting positions. There was some aggresive play from the onset, with players fighting over certain spots or paths. I had to make a few early maneuvers I wasn't planning on just to prevent from getting blocked in all directions. I made a few smart moves and got a few good rolls and pulled away from the pack early.

I got the longest road kind of accidentally. I wasn't trying for it, but I just got it through the normal course of building and expanding. This made me public enemy #1, and I was shut down for the rest of the game, literally. At a crucial point in the game, my wife decided to keep me shut down (I was at 7 points) rather than shutting down her sister, who was behind me by just 1 point. I argued that 2 of my points were variable, and her sister was in a very strong position to win the game. She already had 2 soldiers showing and 2 more development cards to use. As usual, I was shut down for being a loudmouth. Her sister quickly took my longest road and easily won the game just a few turns later with largest army.

This session just bolstered my view of Settlers as one of the most fun, yet most frustrating games. I personally played pretty well, and I was happy with what I accomplished. But I continue to be vexed by players making bad decisions that utlimately tip the game in someone's favor (sometimes mine, but usually not - like I said, I get penalized every game for pleading my case). I felt bad for my brother-in-law, who was continually shut down because we shared a lot of the same spots.

Besides the Settlers game, that same group of 5 also played 3 rounds of Dominion with all expansions. My wife and I had an advantage with the Hinterlands cards since we had played them dozens of times. The other players were seeing them for only the first or second time. My wife one twice, and my sister-in-law won once (That one was an ugly game with the pile of 40 curses depleted. Her winning score was 12.) I won the award of "best player who didn't actually win" by finishing 2nd, 2nd, and 3rd in the 3 games.

The wife and I also played 3 games of 2-player Dominion, all expansions. I won 2 out of 3. All of the games were high-scoring affairs, as we've decided to use platinum/colony all of the time. (We like how it makes games a bit longer and requires a bit more decision making.)

It was a friends trip to the mountains of NC. Four families getting together for fun in the snow. Last year the games consisted mostly of card games (spades, cribbage, rummy) but this year I slipped in a couple of home runs.

Wits & Wagers

went over great with all of the adults and the older children. We played it four or five times.

Villa Paletti

was a slam dunk with everyone. Only draw back is that there was only one stable table in the building. Probably played close to a dozen times.

Tsuro

was played once, it was liked but not that liked.

Tried this one out with my usual game group this past weekend. I thought it had a lot of promise, but I think it was too heavy/long for the occasion.. A few first-game rules mistakes, and a strong Greyjoy-Lannister alliance, caused some folks to lose interest by turn 4.

A future game would probably go better, now that everyone is familiar with the game, but I doubt I'll get this one to the table again. cry

Played Cyclades for the first time friday night (2 player game). And then played a three player game sunday afternoon. Really fun game, easy to learn but tense & difficult to master; great player interaction. Can't wait to play a 5 player game
