"Hmmm , the set up is finished and let's start.....who....wait, a minute ...it should be here in the begining of the rules....yes, here it is"

The ames have different mechanisms to pick the starting player. This is an opportunity to turn the player into the game. A lot of chrome, funny ideas and themes.
Please add to the list. :-)

Family Games that use youngest or oldest go first are usually a statement by the designer that going first is an advantage or a disadvantage.

The implicit assumption is the youngest player is a child and relatively unskilled and the oldest is mom or dad and relatively skilled. Of course, if you are playing the game with all with teenagers or adults, that isn't true.

I recommend randomly choosing start player in this case.

I think Donald was subtly suggesting that luck of the die overpowers skill in this game, so "By skill" is inaccurate. I tend to disagree with this opinion of the game in general, but most of the skill comes in having to keep your car running while trying to win a multi-lap race. A one-lap time trial might be primarily luck.

Well, EuroFront was a good choice, as it has an interesting first-player condition. It's "whoever's playing the Axis" (unless you're playing the 1943 or 1944 scenarios), but strangely, there are no rules for determining who plays the Axis!

Now sometimes this in not an advantage, but in so many games it is an advantage. So, at least the loser from the last game gets to decide who goes first, if he/she doesn't want to go first.

I use meeple rolling - after everyone has chosen a color (I play GREEN) I toss the meeples along the table and the one that goes furtherest designates who goes first. This works for any game that uses meeples or pawns and it is quick and easy. CAUTION: Don't let the guy who rolls dice all over the board do this! Pick someone with a modicum of dexterity!

For games where you choose a color, but have no dice, we generally have someone put one piece of each color into their hand, shake them dramatically, then drop one onto the board/table. This works well for games like Carcassonne, San Marco, Transamerica, etc.
