There's lots of reasons why I don't play chess nowadays (how many games in ths database?) but I think it is truely a great game. I realise that there are many varients so I'd onnly like significant ones listed, but I'll leave that to you.

Well one of the best one, funny, is Kreigspiel (aka Blind Chess) Needs three to play, two opponents and an umpire who actually has a lot of fun as only he knows what is really going on.

Use three boards with screens between them. Each player has his setup, but plays from a place where he/she cannot see the other player’s pieces. A third player is required to be arbitrator. This player tells the other two whether or not the move they made is legal.

In other words, each player is left to guess where the enemy is, and act accordingly. The player making the move, moves the piece they wish to move in the direction they wish to move. Once they take their hand of the piece, the arbitrator tells them if it was legal or not. If it was not legal, i.e. it moved through another piece or a pawn trying to take a piece that is not there then the arbitrator simply tells that player that the move was not legal and they then need to make another move instead. If it was legal, then the piece is left there, and the other player makes his move.

It is the arbitrator’s job to announce check and, if asked, will tell a player if a pawn capture is available to him.

Actually quite a bit more skillful than you might think - scouting out the opponents forces and bluffing comes into it.

A much maligned classic. Simple rules don't equal simple play. Of course, people forget to teach the rule that if you have a capturing move, you must make it. When I learned that, it breathed new life into checkers for me.

Designed to use the same board and pieces provided in a standard Chess set, Arimaa is the first game created intentionally to be difficult for computers to play. The number of possible moves at each turn in Arimaa is almost 1000 times that of Chess.

There is a reward of $10,000 for the first person or company that can build a computer program that can defeat a selected human Arimaa player prior to 2020.

The complete rules of the game are available at the http://www.arimaa.com/ website where visitors can also use an online tutorial.

Running Six on a Checkerboard...is a modification of the Kookaburra Game, and (no surprise) uses the beautifully sculpted Kookaburra Game pieces. RSoaC is only for 2 players; both players have an extra kangaroo; and the rules are modified as well, to make it an adult strategy game.

Running Six on 27 is shown above. Running Six on 30 can be on a 10x7 board, or on an 8x7 Checkerboard. The 30-space track is equivalent to cutting a Kookaburra Game board to remove 3 "rows" between the red and blue rivers, for the purpose of making a 2-player game.

Also, I just created this geeklist for a more specific set of games. These are games played with a checkers set, so not only are they on a chessboard, but they also have to use checkers, rather than other components:

What is with all of the games on this list that are not played on chess boards? A chess board is a full 8x8 square grid. Anything else, be it an 8x8 square grid with the corners lopped off, a 10x10 square grid, a 7x7 or 9x9 or 6x8 or 11x27 square grid is not a chess board and cannot possibly belong on this list.

Should this list name be changed to "Games played an 8x8 grid" to make it in-line with the other links on this page:

http://boardgamegeek.com/wiki/page/Gameboards

I agree with NateStriaght that this list also has some games that are not 8x8 grids and should be cleaned up as such. I don't have a problem with ones that don't use the full 8x8 grid, but the extents should be to 8x8 (similar to the other lists)

Side note: I'm finding the new "Titles Only" link very helpful on these NxN game lists...
