For many years the land of Kyrstaal has been a peaceful and prosperous place to live. Kyrstaal is divided into several kingdoms, each ruled by a different royal family, all of whom have vowed allegiance to King Grappa, ruler of Fidel, the largest and most prominent kingdom in Kyrstaal.

Recent events however, have threatened to destroy the peace they have so long enjoyed. Lord Vatuun, a long forgotten enemy of Grappa has returned and seeks to throw the land into turmoil. In an act of despicable evil Vatuun has kidnapped the King's daughter, Princess Valentine and whisked her away to his fortress, Bloodgate Keep. News of the Valentine's kidnapping has spread like wildfire, fueled by the promise of great rewards for anyone who can rescue the Princess and return her safely home.


Only a hero with bravery and fortitude can hope to accomplish this task and claim...

Getting started

Each player will enter an item to this geeklist by clicking on Add Item in the toolbar at the bottom of the post just above here. The comments made to that item will be that players game content. Players should not enter comments on other players items. In fact, it would be best if you blocked other players items by using the red X under their avatar and selecting "Personal".

As stated in the discussion thread http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/719577/the-kings-ransom-a-pl... each player should enter the following info in their item header.

Character Name - you make up.
Character Role - as in "The Marksman"
Starting Attributes - as in P12 T14 A10 L9 for instance ( no need to use the scrabble letters )
Special Ability - as in "Lay Waste" ( no need to give the details )
You may also put your background story here if you wish to make one up.


In addition at the top of each post you make during the game I will ask each player to put the following info:

Character Name - that you made up.
Current Hit Points (HP 1 for instance )
Special Items/Weapons ( if you have found any )

Basic Game Rules

Please check in and post AT LEAST ONCE PER DAY !


Each character starts the game with a basic weapon. It is possible to find better weapons during the game. A Character may ONLY carry ONE weapon at a time, however. Each character may also carry up to 2 non-weapon items at a time.

So, that's 1 weapon and 2 items as the most you can carry.

Each character will start the game with 3 Hit Points ( 3 HP ). If at any time your character is reduced to 0 HP (zero hit points) he/she is considered dead and will be out of the game. It is possible, but not likely, to regain lost HP.

At any time that you see a prompt in your game thread you may continue your game. For example if you are being asked to choose a course of action or make a dice roll go ahead and do it. This may result in some players "getting ahead of other players but I will keep this restricted enough to be sure it doesn't affect game outcome. Meaning that this game is a RACE and while it is okay for players to jump ahead in the first few turns, at some point all players must be taking the same turns at the same time.

Basics of Combat:

Player vs. Monster

Once combat begins the steps are as follows:

1) Determine Priority ( unless player or "monster" already has priority due to in-game conditions )

Player makes an A roll - LESS than A and the player has priority.
= OR HIGHER and the "monster" has priority.

At anytime you have priority you must choose between Flee or Fight. (some monsters cannot be fleed from)

To Flee the player must roll LESS than A 2 times in a row !
Failing to flee gives priority back to monster.

To Fight the player must roll = or HIGHER than monster T. If successful they make a 2nd roll. If not succesful priority shifts to monster. For the 2nd roll (when successful on 1st) the player must roll to check for a kill. Player must roll LESS than their P to kill monster. If not killed priority shifts to monster.

When monsters are attacking player I will do the d20 roll for the monster. A roll = or HIGHER than player T is a success and the player must go on the defensive. Players have 2 chances to defend vs. the monster hit. First the player makes an A roll. If they roll LESS than their A the hit is deflected. = or HIGHER and the player must hope to get lucky and not sustain a serious wound. If they roll = or LESS than their L the players escapes serious injury. If they roll HIGHER than their L the player has taken a brutal hit and LOSES 1 HP.

Combat continues back and forth in this fashion until either player or monster is killed or until the player makes a succesful flee attempt.

Player vs. Player Combat

It is possible, even likely at some points that 2 characters will encounter each other during their quests. Player vs. Player combat is handled a bit differently than Player vs. Monster.

When 2 characters meet, the one with the highest A will get priority. They may then choose to Flee or Fight. Flee attempts are the same as vs. monsters (see above).

When Fighting the attacking player makes a P roll. = or LESS than their own P and the roll is a success. When this happens the defending player must make a T roll. = or LESS than their own T and the defending player gains priority. HIGHER than their own T and the defender has taken a hit. Once hit a defending player must make an L roll. = or LESS and the defending player gains priority. HIGHER and defending player has sustained a wound. Lose 1 HP.

Again, combat will continue like this until one of the 2 characters either flees or falls in combat.

Yeah, I did word that a little differently than the creature combat.

But in reality the process is the same. At the end of the paragraph above it should read Lose 1 HP, then gain priority.

The main differences are that in PvP combat the attacker rolls vs. their own P not versus the T of opponent. And then, that the defender rolls against their own T and L if needed instead of A & L as in creature combat.

So, yes the player with the highest A starts and combat goes back and forth as usual.

After spending decades cooped up in the mountains of his homeland, young Rubble grew restless. After all, no great adventures he had ever heard of came from sitting around in a cave smacking rocks all day! No, adventure was to be had outside, on the surface, where the world was larger and more open to experiences beyond his meager understanding.

So he left his home, promising his kin that he would come back with grand tales, and that some day his great-great grandchildren would gladly boast of his exploits to their friends. It would be an amazing adventure, and he would live on into eternity....

....of course, that was many years ago, and our young Rubble, who is not so young anymore, has not yet hit upon any adventures worthy of fireside song. Could this be the day that a simple Dwarf's life becomes something so much more? We shall see.....

Kaleo was just playing hide and seek with a few friends around his hometown when he first felt that magical tingle. Class features:

Favored Enemy (Ex): Goblinoids and Giants. The ranger gains a +2 bonus on Bluff, Listen, Sense Motive, Spot, and Survival checks when using these skills against creatures of this type. Likewise, he gets a +2 bonus on weapon damage rolls against such creatures.

Wild Empathy (Ex)

A ranger can improve the attitude of an animal. This ability functions just like a Diplomacy check to improve the attitude of a person. The ranger rolls 1d20 and adds his ranger level and his Charisma modifier to determine the wild empathy check result. The typical domestic animal has a starting attitude of indifferent, while wild animals are usually unfriendly.

To use wild empathy, the ranger and the animal must be able to study each other, which means that they must be within 30 feet of one another under normal visibility conditions. Generally, influencing an animal in this way takes 1 minute, but, as with influencing people, it might take more or less time.

The ranger can also use this ability to influence a magical beast with an Intelligence score of 1 or 2, but he takes a -4 penalty on the check.

Trap Spotter - Whenever a rogue with this talent comes within 10 feet of a trap, she receives an immediate Perception skill check to notice the trap. This check should be made in secret by the GM.
Fast Stealth - This ability allows a rogue to move at full speed using the Stealth skill without penalty.

Rogue Abilities:
Sneak Attack +3d6
Trap Sense +2 bonus on Reflex saves made to avoid traps and a +1 dodge bonus to AC against attacks made by traps
Trap Finding +3 to Perception skill checks made to locate traps and to Disable Device skill checks. A rogue can use Disable Device to disarm magic traps.
Evasion - a rogue can avoid even magical and unusual attacks with great agility. If she makes a successful Reflex saving throw against an attack that normally deals half damage on a successful save, she instead takes no damage.
Uncanny Dodge - a rogue can react to danger before her senses would normally allow her to do so. She cannot be caught flat-footed, nor does she lose her Dex bonus to AC if the attacker is invisible. She still loses her Dexterity bonus to AC if immobilized.

FEATS
--------------------

1) Weapon Finesse - You are trained in using your agility in melee combat, as opposed to brute strength. With a light weapon, elven curve blade, rapier, whip, or spiked chain made for a creature of your size category, you may use your Dexterity modifier instead of your Strength modifier on attack rolls. If you carry a shield, its armor check penalty applies to your attack rolls.

2) Two-Weapon FightingYou can fight with a weapon wielded in each of your hands. You can make one extra attack each round with the secondary weapon. Your penalties on attack rolls for fighting with two weapons are reduced. The penalty for your primary hand lessens by 2 and the one for your off hand lessens by 6. See Two-Weapon Fighting. Normal: If you wield a second weapon in your off hand, you can get one extra attack per round with that weapon. When fighting in this way you suffer a –6 penalty with your regular attack or attacks with your primary hand and a –10 penalty to the attack with your off hand. If your off-hand weapon is light, the penalties are reduced by 2 each. An unarmed strike is always considered light.

3) Stealthy - You are good at avoiding unwanted attention and slipping out of bonds. You get a +2 bonus on all Escape Artist and Stealth skill checks.

4) Weapon Focus, Rapier (from Rogue Talent) - You gain a +1 bonus on all attack rolls you make using the selected weapon.

BACKGROUND
-------------------

Seldriss spent his youth in relative luxury. He had caring parents, a decent education and good friends. None of that was ever taken away from him. He never lost a close friend or family member to marauding orcs. He was never wounded in a goblin raid. No sorcerer ever cursed him, nor did any gods cast strife and ill-luck his way. His lovers never betrayed him and his wife never left him for nor was she ravaged or killed by a nameless enemy, barbarian or former friend. In fact, after many decades of an extremely normal and stable life, Seldriss realized that nothing had really ever happened to him. Seldriss, at that point, at that very moment, became bored. That boredom bread a great dread - did he really have centuries of this to look forward to?

With that Seldriss decided to seek adventure. He decided to focus on his natural agility and began learning the skills of stealth and skulduggery. He would take breaks for many years now and then, but whenever he got bored he sought adventure. For awhile he would hire out his services, specializing in 'recovering' items for people - items that yet other people thought belonged to them instead of those who wanted the item 'recovered'. Sometimes it got rather confusing so Seldriss seldom asked for details.

Currently, he is in one of his adventuring moods...
