Over the past little while, I have purchased many games. My wife enjoys games, however, her experience with games is with traditional card games, chess, and mainstream traditional board games (Monopoly, Life, Risk, Battleship). The game can't be longer than 45 minutes to play (we have 2 toddlers which impacts on our time), and I'm looking for simple play mechanics. I've tried to keep the list small. Any recommendations from the list I've provided?

Cheers

This was one of the first games I introduced to my wife and she liked it. Now she likes Lost Cities a little better - most likely because she's been winning most of the games lately.

My wife and I started to like this game a lot more when we found the original (unpublished) rules here on BGG (one can only place a card on the opponents side of the hop when he/she has already filled up his/her own side). How one plays is a matter of taste, but we definitely find the game more interesting now than before.

Good game, but it has been replaced by many other ones of choice we play now. Still, I miss playing it, and it is sure to hit the table. Especially with the new rules that the previous person cited.

This one is crap. Broken card(s) (Mistress of ceremonies, and maybe judge as well) and predictable gameplay.
Then you have to bring those fiddly money back and forth all the time, which make the game last even longer.

My wife hates this game. She likes nongamer and gamer games, but this one was just a bomb with her.

I personally liked the game for the first while, but now its scripted, boring, and determined by who gets a few cards. Not one I would worry about.

This would be my pick from the choices on your list. It has the closest feel to being a "familiar" type of game that should appeal to players who have only played traditional boardgames. This feels like something that could have been created in the 70's that's been played to death by generations over the years...hmmm I don't know if that's actually a good thing ...but it's definately easy to teach and scales well from 2-5 as well.

I agree with the above comments. The nice thing about this game vs. the Kosmos games for example is that it does scale past 2 players. Once you get your wife hooked you can drag in another couple.

If your wife likes playing rummy this should be a winner since it's a good deal about set collection.

i very much agree with this one. It sat in the corner by the couch for about 2 months before I FINALLY got her to play, but once she did, she was hooked and I had a full-time game partner.

Plus, it gets really nasty after you've played about 30 games

Don't forget to let her win the first couple games!!

Scales from 2-4 players perfectly. But for 2 players it is fast, tactical, and very very fun. The double game elements and light screwage factor really appeals to wives. Also, the stunning board and bits draws people into it in a big way.

For 2 players the games never last more than 30 minutes..

Underrated is an understatement. This game should be in the top 100 imo.

One of the things with this game, you really can't judge it after 1-2 plays.. The brilliance of it wasn't apparently to me until 3-4 plays. Now after 10+ plays, this is simply a lovely game filled with tactical and strategic challenges.

I *ADORE* the two game systems melded into one game. It just works, and flows seamlessly.

This game is really boring. I bought it due to the long list of people who love it.

I think the deal with this game is that if you grew up playing alot of cards, this is a real step backward into the type of games you played when you were 7.

If you never played any card games before, and only board games, I can see that it would be a fairly fresh mechanic, and maybe pretty fun.

That's an interesting observation. Anyone else think it's true. Works for me (grew up playing lots of cards, find this a boring card game), but I wonder whether the people who like it are actually people who haven't played cards much. (Also works for my just-8 year old. It's the kind of card game she wanted to play when she was 7!)

Now Loco! (which I've never played with 2 -- not sure you can) struck me as a simple but fresh card game compared to what I was used to.

I am not sure exactly why but this game seems to be loved by many women players. I enjoy it as well but my wife would play this game every chance she got. Very enjoyable with two players and a little more deep then many other "couples" games.

You won't go wrong with this and it does expand to 6 players.

I haven't played this one with my wife, but this is a worthy game to own, regardless. The 2-player game (with a summy player that actually serves a purpose to you) is decent, but that this is an EXCELLENT 3-player game is where it's at.

Works really well as 2-player game. A favorite with the wife, and she seems to beat me quite often. Constructing a good Alhambra requires an element of interior design (that I don't have )

My wife and I play this a lot. Plays in less than 45 minutes, one can use a variety of strategies to win, and the games between my wife and I are often close. The caravan-building aspect reminds me a little of Ticket to Ride, and the area-capture aspect hints at a more complex game like Go.

This one would be an excellent choice. Its fun, its fast, its cute, and the level of depth will continue to grow as you both get better at it. She can start of playing it at a very superficial level and still be okay at it. Once it starts to click for her some of the deeper games on this list will be easy to introduce.

This is my current favorite strictly 2 player non-wargame. My fiance loves this one, rating it a 10. This to me has a lot more depth than Lost Cities, Balloon Cup, Kupferkessel Co and some of the others mentioned here. St Petesburg, San Juan is a pretty cool game too.

I just don't get why this one is liked. It seems to be all about luck to me. I have played it a handful of times. Each time someone who was getting KILLED came back with one crazy dice roll.

There are so many better 2 player offerings, I don't get why this one is getting so much attention. It will be forgotten within the year.

Sure there is luck as with any game that involves rolling dice. The key to this game is figuring out how to make the best of bad dice rolls and how to contend with an opponent who is on the verge of winning.

Maybe this will not be forgotten for awhile, especially given the fact that a game as riduculously dull as Through the Desert has been in the top 100 this long.

Balloon Cup and Lost Cities are almost guaranteed to be on any list like this, but they are very light -- especially for the "gamer" in gamer/nongamer couples... shake
I have found Reef Encounter to be an excellent two-player choice: meaty and strategic depth for the gamer, cute shrimples and engaging theme for the nongamer. There is a distinct possibility of player-screwage, so this choice may not be for some, but might make this game all the more worthwhile for others.

Nongamer wife + Reef Encounter Rules explanation = Really Bad Experience.

I love this game, and my wife would probably dig it. Most nongamers would be glazed over and asleep before you were able to communicate how all the mechanics work together.

my wife has given a lot of my games a go and i thank her for it, but this game leaves her cold, its too heavy and the 'game within a game' thing confuses the hell out of her(im talking about the manipulation of the open ocean board coupled with the more conventional tile mechanics)
i really wanted her to like it but you cant like everything, but that said, if your wife loves heavy logic games and planning ahead, she'll probably like this.

I'm not very good at judging weight, so no comment on that score. I would consider this one to have an awfully long playing game to spring on a non-gamer one is trying to convert, particularly factoring in the initial rules explanation. I've only played it once, with four avid gamers, and with an expert rules explainer. It took 3+ hours, and some of the rules just washed right over me until we started playing. My husband (who just happily spent 10 hours playing TI3 yesterday) jokes that it takes about as long to play Reef Encounter as it does to grow an actual reef.

Reccomended (if it is relevant: it scales nicely from 2 to 4, but with 2 it's the more "strategic" version).

It just is fun (much more fun than any other dice game I've played (although I haven't played Liar's Dice yet, which wouldn't be good with 2 anyway)).

OTOH, as a spousal game it may leave one or the other of you really nervous re who controls the family's investments.

You might want to consider the recommendation for Fjords since your wife likes chess. Fjords is nothing like chess, it just makes this a better choice as a "couples" game, specifically geared towards her gaming history.

Fjords is played in 2 parts and plays quickly (around 10-15 minutes per game). You can play just one game or best of 3 (or more). And if you purchase it online, it can be purchased fairly cheaply.

You might also want to include Dungeon Twister in your list. My wife and I played it, what I like about this game is that there are indication on how to play with handicaps. Since I'm strong with strategies (compared to my wife), she tend not to play more than 1 game with me, as I win easily (it would be too obvious if I let her win, she wouldn't believe me! )

Plus it's a game without dice. First game without dices, and I liked it!
