Love is in the air, and we LOVE us some wargames!!!

It's that time again: February! What wargames are you playing? Who are you playing with? If it is ongoing, how is the game going? How did you enjoy it? Inquiring minds want to know!

NEW: Is there a game you really want to play? Go check out this Geeklist:
The VASSAL/Cyberboard/SKYPE request list.

And once again, if you get a chance, cruise on over to this Geeklist and look through it. It is a list of war games that do not have a review. If you are willing and able, pick one out and get it on the table if need be, or write a review for it. Let's strengthen our war games in the data base!

Also, if you have not seen it, cruise over to the War Games FLGS Directory and add a game store.

Played a game at the Williamsburg Muster. We played the whispering wood scenario. The Lannisters hit hard early, but my Starks were able to encircle Jamie Lannister and capture him. Since I already had 5VP that ended the game.

I had fun with this one, but everything about the game felt very fiddly. I still prefer Commands & Colors: Ancients or this system.

Mark demoed the game for me at his LnL booth. We played the first scenario for the demo. I had the Russians and rushed the objective cities. Along the way I lost a couple of my platoons but in turn six I was able to take Eisenbach for the victory.

Great sales technique on Mark's part, letting me win. I dove right into the system picking up World at War: Eisenbach Gap, World at War: Death of the 1st Panzer, and World at War: Blood and Bridges. If you ever have the chance to get a demo from Mark jump at it. He is a super nice guy, and he does a great job teaching the games.

I just finished the 1965 (War in the South) Long Navy campaign which was a bit more difficult than the other campaigns (which I had been finding too easy). Stress really builds up fast with no ECM Pods available, and 2 less aircraft available for each mission made it a real challenge to score enough hits on the target while not being able to carry many extra weapons against sites. I found that I had to use Blu-1s (Napalm) on some of the missions or they would have been impossible. I failed two of the seven missions, and had to use nearly all of my SO points for special weapons, Tanker priority, and R&R. Not having any enemy Bandits in this campaign made things easier, though.

My final score was 15 VPs (a Good rating), which is still pretty good. I only had one aircraft destroyed (although several were damaged throughout the campaign), with the pilot having a Quick Recovery (a lucky homeward bound Event card draw). So, it still was rather easy, I guess, although more fun than some of the cakewalks I have played with the Leader Series games in the past.

I prepared a new squadron and the Target and Event Cards for my next Phantom Leader campaign, which will be a 1967 Long Navy Campaign. The strange thing about the Navy aircraft is how some of them have no guns with no opportunity to get gun pods for them (like the F-4 Phantom, for example).

This is the status at end of Nov 41 and I'm playing the Soviets. Front is still holding well but the Wermacht is still pretty much intact.

We'll see if Winter can slow down the Germans a bit

After a very busy summer I believe things will quiet down a bit and I can get back into a good wargaming groove.

On my solo wall at the moment is this beauty. I've finished the first turn and a half and the Bulge is beginning to form as the Germans have broken through the Allied centre.

As I've self-taught this one, I'm still getting my head around the rules, although they are quite slim. I like the FOW variable strength chits and pinned up a couple bags to use as "cups" (not shown). Works surprising well as I just look away when drawing.

Here is a picture of the opening set-up. The OOB is too large to fit properly on my magnetic whiteboard, so the counters are still lying sorted in the tray.

Played my 3rd game of this last week, scenario 3 as the Germans was getting my A** handed to me by well layed wire defenses and simply great and timely card pulls by my opponenet. At one point was 25 points behind then in the last quarter of the game I managed a come back and ended up lossing the game by a single victory point. I love how well unpredictability of combat is modeled in this game and its over all design is simply a wonder. Upped my rating from a 9 to a 10 one of only 2 games rated 10 in my collection.

Not even close to being comfortable with this yet but I am loving its detail and the huge sweep of history it represents. This might be the game that gets me to learn vassel. Already gave it an 8 and expect it will go up eventually.

Patch and I had our second round of Baecula tonight.

After seeing how crucial holding the hills had been for me last week as the Carthaginians, I concentrated on the Roman center to begin with, using missile fire to try weaken his forward center. I got lucky with banner results on his open flank, and retreated half his line off the hills in two turns. Since his line had unraveled from the left, I planned on pushing there as much as I could, but first I moved up the right flank so that it would be in range to put pressure on him if I got in trouble elsewhere.

And then I just kept drawing more right flank cards, so that turned into a major push. patch managed to get his heavies with Hasdrubal up to support that flank, and I planed to knock them out with a coordinated attack from two leader-supported Mediums. One First Stike card later, I was out a unit of Mediums, and weakened him with the second unit. A turn or two later, I finally got the rest of the heavies with an Auxilia attacking out of the hills.

Both of us had some noticeably depleted units from all the archery going on in the center, and I was starting to expect we would be trading units for a while after that exchange.

Instead, things quieted down for a while, with slow reworking of the line, and more attrition happening at the corner of the right flank.

I had drawn a Line Command card, and it took me a couple turns to reassemble the line properly, by which time I had drawn a second one. After I used the first one, Patch played his Line Command, and archery retreated one of my units out of line (two banners!). If not for that we would have seen all three of those cards in a row.

This had allowed me to get the left flank into contact, and I knocked out an Auxilia on the first Line Command. The second one finished off a 1-block light on the left, and Scipio's Mediums took out a light unit on the right (2xGreen, 2xLeader), I then momentum advanced into the camp he was sitting on for the final banner. 6-1

Pretty much everything came together for me. I had pretty good archery dice, not bad melee dice, and a fairly strong card selection all the way through. Add that to being on the advantaged side, and the score isn't too surprising. The early roll up of his line on the hills really set the tone for the rest of the battle.

Next week, back to ASL, and "Mila 18".

Just got this in and have played three scenarios. The components are excellent although there were nibs left on the counters so I had to clip the counters. This of course is leading to other Lock n' Load modules saying hello to my little clipping friend.

Played Ap Bac pitting ARVN and Viet Cong forces. I did not use the terrain and ambush ability of the VC to best advantage and ended up with an ARVN walkover. Forgetting to place my sniper didn't help either.

A Friend in Need was a fun quick dust-up between US Army and VC. Quick work by US forces to oust the VC from the board by turn 6.

Finally the Marines met there match in the streets of Hue in River of Perfume. Having to charge across the streets and not getting your smoke rolls equals a bad day for the Corps.

Great fun and an excellent effort from Mark Walker and crew. Also played a Ring of Hills scenario,Sabot Up!, which was my first night rules scenario in LnL or ASL. Went right down to the last melee roll with the British eliminating 15 MMC of SMC counters.

Played a solo session early Monday morning (or late Sunday night if you will). Couldn't sleep after the Super Bowl, probably due to a combnination of too much good food and drink and a disappointing game result. With all that free time on my hands, I hauled out this little gem and played a quick game. The French had the Prussians on the ropes for most of the game, but somehow the latter managed to hold on turn after turn before losing their last morale point on turn 12 (after just barely missing the "sudden end" die roll).

I've got the C3i version, with the small counters with incredibly small print on the unit IDs. Despite this, and despite several minor errors in the production, it's a great little game. In this series I also own Dresden 20 and have Fading Glory on pre-order from GMT. I like it a lot and look forward to adding more games; Leipzig 20 is on my radar when I can free up some cash.

Shane and I played this for a couple of hours last night, finding out the hard way that a standard slugfest scenario is very hard to win for either side without a lot of luck. Overall, though, we both liked the concept (standard Columbia Games A - D combat and hidden movement) with the fantasy theme. And I realize that I must by some expansion armies and maps to make this reach its true potential, and I think it has a lot of potential.

I taught this one to Shane, and of course screwed up the maps (using home sectors 1B and 2B instead of 1A and 2A) which altered the game. He really liked the mechanics and since its such a short playing game, I suspect it will see a bunch more playing time.
