Board gaming is one of the most fulfilling types of fun that I can think of. But like most all organized gatherings that focus on something, there is always a slight annoyance that occurs from game to game. I'm going to list a couple of my pet peeves, please share your own.

This is only a minor quibble, since the people I play with are generally pretty cool. But why must they try to mod the game before you've even finished one play of it?! "You know, I think this would be better if . . ." And frequently the suggestion is to curb the strategy employed by the winner.

You know, they did spend some time playtesting this game before they released it. Please play it a few more times before concluding that strategy A or tactic Z is overpowered!

Leaving the table, except for agreed upon breaks, just ticks me off. Fill yer cup, slaughter yer pig, and empty yer bladder before the game. Then wait until everyone breaks before doing it again. There is nothing worse than a thematic buzz-kill!!

Yeah, yeah. We all know AP is annoying, but what I find even worse is the guy who gets so annoyed by another player's AP that he has to continually nag the player - which obviously doesn't help, and usually makes the situation worse.

Sometimes you genuinely need to think for a longer period of time, and saying, "Hurry up!" over and over again doesn't speed up the process.

Analysis Paralysis can be a serious problem. I'm not sure what the cause is, but I'm pretty sure it's not because the player isn't being nagged enough.

Relax! Is there somewhere you need to be? Let him concentrate.

This one's easy for me. Every game is not a game of Diplomacy, folks! In fact, negotiation isn't part of most games. I friggin' HATE it when people ruin a good game by table talking. If it's in the rules (e.g. Catan, Genoa, etc.), negotiate away; otherwise, stop trying to manipulate the game when it's not your turn.

If I have a pet Peave with regard to game play and it is a person who plays a card game and must hold the cards, curved/bent, in their hands the entire duration of the game. To add insult to this is to eat cheese puffs/cheese corn, and buttered popcorn (all of his bringing) while playing.

All games are now sleeved and the sleeves are discarded after play

Game Trolling

Example: We were playing Munchkin, I was still at level 1, everybody else is at least level 5. There was someone at level 9, almost ready to win.
Fate has it that a level 1 monster came up on my turn, I had a chance to go to level 2, YEAH! I won't be stuck on level 1 at the end. I had just enough to beat it. Then Erik, Game Troll, decides to bump it up a bunch of levels! I really don't get it! I had a few cards in my hand to fight it, but he play all of his cards to stop me. So I got screwed! The second player after me won because no one had cards to stop him and I ended up never leveling up. The Game Troll wasted his cards on me. I knew that I wasn't going to win, but I just wanted to level up.

It drives me nuts when a fellow player at the table feels they must call out the sums of the dice in Can't Stop. Yes, I see a rolled a six. We all know I rolled a six.

I could see possibly nudging along a slow player with some potential sum suggestions, but when you shout out "got a seven!" as soon as the dice hit the table, you just look like an impatient ass.

I don't know if this happens to anyone else, or I'm the only affected.

I'm usually the game getter, game keeper and game explainer. My game group is mainly my wife, one of her sisters, and this sister's husband. I pick the rulebook, study it, display the board and the components, and try to figure out how it works, as everybody does. So far so good.

Then comes the dreaded moment of explaining the rules. I hate that moment for several reasons:
1.- As it was pointed out before, they usually interrupt me to ask me something I still have to explain.

2.- Lots of times they pick the cards or take a look at the components while I'm still explaining the basic gameplay.

3.- Yes, of course, they ask afterwards lots of things I've already explained.

4.- Our first games are plagued with "You didn't say that" "I don't get this game" "This is too complex". I heard the this is too complicated thing even with 7 Wonders!!

5.- They NEVER look at the game aids I give them.

6.- But, this is what drives me nuts, and don't know if it happens to anybody else: If I get pissed off for anything of the above, my wife begins to mock me and laugh at me because I take the gaming too seriously!!
Last time she did it was when I was explaining Power Grid to them, and got me really angry. In the end, I won our first game (I had already a game under my belt, against my brothers), not surprisingly.

Rolling dice onto the game board and knocking around the pieces. Would it have killed you to roll them to the side? Or maybe you didn't need to toss them at full strength so they'd go all the way across the table, leaving a path of destruction.

I also can't stand the opposite - the delicate dice drop. Wait did you even roll those things?

When we set up a game night of something like BSG and I ask if you're going to bring anyone, tell me. Don't say "no" and then show up with one or two extra people. Especially when you already know the game is full. One player going home and one (me) becoming the moderator sucks balls because you can't f*cking communicate.

If it's a general game night, by all means bring friends. Again, let me know so I can bring games that can either accommodate everyone or break into two groups.

Some people feel the need to sing about everything that happens in a game.

Like when a planeswalker comes out in Magic, they might make up a little song about it. Ususally with poor/forced rhymes.

Or when the Dimensional Diver comes up/is played/is bought in Ascension, they start singing 'Holy Diver.'

Or making up jingles for Carcassonne.

Or writing a whole song about Hagoth: Builder of Ships

This ususally happens when they're really tired. Sometimes no one even gets what they're singing about.

Oh.

Wait.

That's just what I do . . .

. . .

. . . I hope no one gets annoyed . . .

I get it....I'm a lucky board-gamer... I win a disproportional amount of the time. (Maybe that's because I read the rules, I explain them and they weren't listening...I'm just sayin.) But it really annoys me when another player's sole purpose of playing is to keep me from winning. They don't play to win themselves, only to try to make sure I don't win regardless of how bad/good I may be doing. Its the ultimate sense of accomplishment when I am able to pull off the win regardless.

"don't go there! Go here instead! That's going to mess me up!"

These are all things I've heard from another players spouse, not in a cooperative game. The spouse gets very bossy and starts telling the player what to do, clearly to benefit their own position. Whether they give in or not is immaterial - I've seen it go both ways - and it's the attitude that you should be playing to help me win, not yourself, that's grating.

Related to this is the silent partnership, where two players have an unspoken agreement to cooperate against everyone else. Only when all other players are eliminated do they duke it out between themselves.

This isn't necessarily annoying. I've got a pretty good sense of proportion. I will say that it's hard to play three-player against family members.

They usually don't attack or block each other, so it's uphill all the way. I finish last all the time; but, when it's predetermined because it's basically two against one, rather than mutual bashing, it's not very much fun.

There is a certain person that is a some sort of super-regular at this gaming meetup group I'm in. He has been at every single meetup event I've been to. I currently have a strict policy of avoiding playing any game with him involved. Why? He thinks he knows what the best move would be for you when it's your turn and will not hesitate to PICK UP YOUR PIECE AND MOVE IT FOR YOU while explaining why this move is obviously what you should do. For collaborative games, he does this all the time to all players, but even in competitive games, he will do this to any player he feels "needs help".

Help with Clean-Up

This use to be the case, but lately not so much. After every game, I was the only one cleaning up. Picking up all of the pieces and putting them in bags and other stuff. All of the while everybody is talking about "what's the next game we're playing." I finally started saying "I'm still putting this one away, we'll play another one as soon as I get this done!" They got the hint.
