These are games that just go totally over the top in terms of production. By overproduced I mean that the game just blows you away when you open the box. For fun, add the one element that really pushes the game over the top (the most excessive, maybe useless, but still cool bit).

The box weighs something like 10 pounds. It's packed full of awesome bits. Like the back of the box says, you'll feel like you're building a model railroad. The really excessive and ludicrous components in this game are the gigantic board that doesn't even fit on most people's tables and the empty city markers. All they do is mark a city as having no goods, but they are molded models of water towers, railroad crossings, and station houses. They look awesome on the board.

Railroad Tycoon is a great game, my wife recently bought it for me. She paid just over £50 Sterling for it. ( I live in the UK) So with the exchange rate as it is at the moment she paid more than a wacking $100 for it. Was it worth it? Hell yes!!!!

So you can spend about $50 on Settlers and Cities & Knights, or you can spend $300 on this ridiculously overproduced but still cool collector's edition. The hexes and pieces are all sculpted and painted and the setup just looks amazing. The most ridiculous bit in this game is the knights, who carry little flags that you can raise when they are activated. The wooden treasure chest the game comes in is awfully nice too.

My husband and I bought this for my mom & dad when it first came out and my mom quickly solved this problem by making colored markers to represent the various types of land tiles. (She glued colored to the flat side of those glass blobs they use in flower vases, but there are lots of other things you could do.) Put the markers in a cup, pull one at a time, select the matching land type and away you go....

I'm happy to say that this game (not necessarily the 3D version, but it probably helped) transformed my dad from a you-gotta-beg-him to a when-do-we-start game player. In fact, he returned the favor this year and gave us a copy for Christmas.

It really is very beautiful and more fun to play. Especially putting the flags on the knights. ;)

The random set up is a cinch -- just shuffle the right number of cards of each terrain type (including one of the special upgrade cards to represent the dessert). Then deal them out in the islands shape -- replacing each card with the right terrain as you set up.

The deluxe set is the only way to play Settlers! Worth every penny -- expecially if you bought it at $200 or less from an internet seller.

History of the World is an older title so it's kind of eclipsed by some of the more recent titles. But each player gets a set of minis that contains like 8 or 9 different models that represent the various civs through time. The gold and silver painted forts and arches are the classiest touch in the game.

Starfarers of Catan is Settlers moved into space on steroids. It comes with a ton of plastic bits, but of course the most ludicrously overproduced bit is the rocket ships. These things are basically dice but instead we have 8" tall rockets with beads inside that you shake up. How crazy is that? If the stuff in the box is not enough for you, you can also buy painted miniatures of all the various races. Not that they do anything. They just kind of stand around and look cool.

Grognards should be grateful for A&A--without it, most people would have never even tried anything close to a wargame. (Risk is far too abstract to count as such).

Not entirely true, as a grognard my first experience with wargaming was chess. Afterall chess is nothing more than a battle on a defined board with pieces that have defined movements.

A&A is a neat game for what it intends to be. I personally will not play it since I own far too many other wargames and euros that I find personally more appealing. When I see people playing it the thing that most strikes me is there are two camps.

1: "This game is complex and difficult" - Those types tend to never get into wargaming at any level beyond A&A

2: "Why can't I do more with this game" - These types eventually end up finding wargaming is more up their alley.

Sid Meier's Civ kind of started the current "arms race" of overproduction in my opinion. Remember all the hype leading up to this game's release? I think they actually cast in miniatures every military unit that has ever existed on Earth. This is one of the more literally "overproduced" games, because the game itself was not particularly well received.

Not only do I own this, and have played it, but another of my game group (although WHY, I don't know) owns it as well. We've played this game many times. I'm sorry, but it's true.

As a matter of fact, when two of us were playing a one-on-one game of the LAST game on this list (A&A), we were simultaneously discussing the fact that we needed to play another round of this monster.

Of course, we have some house rules... but none of them changes the game system, or makes it into something else.

There's a GOOD game in there! Sure, it's got its flaws... but why buy another game you HOPE is going to be the game you thought this was when a few simple tweaks will fix the one you already own. Suggestions included in my game rating comment.

Also, there's less dissappointment this way when 'another civ. game doesn't pan out', which I've heard all too often, here.

I also firmly believe in this. And I think that, with a little tweaking WITHOUT changing the rules, this game could become much less stressing.

For example, a clever done income track (like that in A&A) can reduce the bookkeeping. The use of combat cards (with just 3 types, "INF", "CAV" and "ART") could replace that dumb "hide behind any screen (not included in this game) your selected unit" rule AND bring a lot of useful information to the user (like how many dice, attacking power, cost, strong vs./ weak vs., etc). Painting the units bases with the era colour (green, purple, yellow, red) can ease a lot the purchasing proccess...

I really like this game, the idea, the production values, the sense of building something big and unique, it's so sad the poorly conceived finishing of the rules make that come for such a high price.

This game just kind of makes me sad. My wife and I picked it up thinking that it was going to be God's personal gift to us. And we pulled it out, and we read copious rules, we re-read those same rules to make sure we had them, we punched bits, we trimmed spars, we bagged pieces, we set up and we played. And it was good.

And we played again a week later, and it was still good but not as good.
About 4 games in we realized that the secret to victory was taking all the Gems and Wine like homeless people fighting over a hamburger. There is a seperation in life between the haves and the have-nots. That pretty much killed it for me.

This was of course before I knew BGG existed otherwise I wouldn't have wasted my money after reading some reviews. I've been thinking about putting the cloth map to use with ships and rules from the Pirates of the Spanish Main and it's expansions. Instead of measuring movement with card edges one could easily do it using the square hexes on the map. Treasure to plunder could be set up in the Dread Isle i'm pretty sure it could work with some rule variants.

Splotter is known for overproduction, and this one has an insane amount of stuff in its box... gazillions of chits for food (5 types I think), gold, bricks, luxuries (4 types?), pollution, graves, dozens of buildings, terrain maps, cities, inns, etc. And worker blocks.

To top it off, the game box, the rules, and especially hte player aids are gorgeous to behold and evocative of the theme.

Probably the same goes for the famous "Roads and Boats".

Have to agree with ixnay here. Punched cardboard is not overproduced, regardless of how much of it you have (if it's functional.)

Overproduced is including prepainted minis when cardboard chits could suffice. Overproduced is including silver and gold coins when paper money could suffice. Antiquity is big and expensive, but it's not overproduced.

In reality this is a card driven game along the lines of Wings of War or Wreckage. Port damage chips and Starboard damage chips were really all that was necessary. The Boarding party part of the game is fun, but usually you just do it to clean up the mess that is left of you opponent.

Now let's step back into the realm of reality. This is a miniatures game, so it sort of doesn't count. Great components are just part of the package. But this one comes in a wooden carrying box complete with paints and paintbrushes. That's neat and all, but what sets this game apart is the magnetic tiles. Not only are they sculpted plastic, but they all have little magnets inside of them so that that lock together. Very cool.

No list of overproduced games would be complete without the amazing Heroscape. It's a miniatures game, but all the minis come prepainted. The defining feature of Heroscape, however, is the interlocking plastic terrain tiles. They come in a variety of landscapes including grass, sand, water, rock, and even "hot lava death". People buy multiple sets of this game and create some enormous landscapes. Check the one out in the picture.

I got my kicked at this recently. I spent the last half hour of the "game" trying to get the miniatures back into their little (haha) packing tray while my partner prolonged the agony of defeat.

Let's just say this is the king of miniatures AND the king of inadequate storage: what psycho in manufacturing thought that box was adequate? First you have to figure out where the miniatures go back to in that totally unlabelled generic plastic-inject-molded sheet, then you have to try and get various (multitudinous!) hexes back into the box. We had an inch left over when all was said and done, but perhaps we were too old (over fourty) to figure out the packaging?

Am I bitter? you bet!

I don't think it was ever intended to go back into the plastic. If all you've got is the basic set, you can still use the box for storage, though. (not me, I've got a big damn tub now, and that's already starting to overflow)

1. Take the wings off mimring.
2. Pack all the terrain as tight as it will go (bricks the size of two big terrain pieces should do it).
3. pack the miniatures in tight.
4. cut the top off the box on three sides, to give a little more space on the top.

That should hold you until you get some expansions.

My personal favorite in this category is Kaliko, the wooden version of Psyche-Paths from Kadon. Almost everything else on this list is about more, more, more. More bits, more detail, more variety. Kaliko goes in the other direction -- it has very simple, but oh-so-elegant wooden tiles. Sure, they could have made the tiles out of cardboard and sold the game for $15. Instead, the wooden tiles push the price tag close to $100. But the feel and sound of the wooden tiles is sooooooo much more satisfying than cardboard...

If there is one thing "overproduced" here, it's the second level of the palace. It's just about always bypassed anyway.

My only regret is that I didn't buy a second copy of this game, as its value is increasing. I like to take it around to conventions I go to and constantly get badgered by people who want to buy it.

For those of you with sets that the palace is falling apart on you while you are playing, just squeeze a bit of "poster putty" into the corner stantions where the floor tiles fit in. This will help it hold together while playing but can still be easily taken apart without damaging the cardstock.

Here's one that sadly fits into the literally overproduced category. I'm talking about the recent Avalon Hill edition. Instead of the boring old paper discs we get molded plastic aliens and a colorful board. Unfortunately, in focusing on all the cool bits they neutered the game by leaving out the ability for 5+ players and a whole bunch of special powers. They just had to have those space ships that do nothing but carry aliens to the warp, didn't they?

We play CE on our lunch break at work a lot. The person who owns the set(s) has (I believe) just about everything ever produced for the game, so we've ended up fusing bits from various editions together.

We use the highly-produced AH board and pieces with two homemade cardboard 'Ghetto Systems' added in (with black and pink wooden cubes as ships) if we have more than 4 players that game. The cards are from an older version (or versions, I think) and have been put into card protectors with Bicycle playing cards as backers so you can't tell what card is what from the wear on it or style of card back. It makes the various piles huge and shuffling a challenge, but we like it - the crash-built feel of our stuff with the polished AH board and ships is an amusing contrast, and personally I greatly prefer playing the cubes for the simple reason I hate fumbling the ships into the carriers.

I also managed to seek in a victory once because nobody counted my harder-to-see black cubes amidst the taller AH pieces and everybody who could cheerfully allied with me to aid me in gaining my fifth base. I didn't realize myself until time to lay the cards down, and I remember wondering if I should throw the challenge or risk getting lynched...

Worked out OK though - I work with a really cool group of guys. :)

I love Java, but I don't think the bits are actually overproduced in this one...they are incredibly thick because the game plays in 3 dimensions and the thickness makes it easy to tell at a glance how tall a given area of the board is.

I might add that the machine used to punch the tiles was a little dull by the time it got to my copy since I had to use a razor blade to cut the tiles out...peh.

Niagara is a little family game about boats moving up and down a river collecting gems. The first thing that catches your eye is the awesome plastic gemstones. So many games use glass beads as gems, but these things actually look like gemstones. However, the most amazing thing about this game is that the box converts to the game board and the boats ride on these clear plastic discs. Each turn you give the discs a push and the whole river moves downstream. Boats at the end fall of the "waterfall" (the edge of the game box).

Not only will it protect your box but it keeps components from sliding around (RotH, Catans, Heroscape, etc). Felt and plexi-glass (over boardgames like Memoir, Power Grid, all wargames to keep everything in place) don't play games without it.

Reading through this list, I'm getting excited about a game idea: The British Empire, 1750-1918. Every single person who lived in Britain during that time period will have their own card w/ stats, abilities, etc, on the back. The game board will be played on a football field, with Europe, Asia & the Americas abstracted in the stands. Africa would be in the parking lot.

It could be produced w/ cheap Chinese labor & retail for $89.99
