I was recently asked to volunteer some time to a local thrift/benefit shop where I will be appraising the condition, components, and resale value of donated games.

It is my hope that these items sell for reasonable prices as the proceeds go to support local social programs.

My first week provided me with the following older and somewhat unknown items.

1. Board Game: Adventures of Robin Hood [Average Rating:3.00 Unranked]

Condition : Box worn with some split corners. Game itself in good condition.

Components : Missing one Arrow marker and one black wooden block. Does not impact greatly on game play.

Recommendation : See Break the Bank below.

Components : Appears to be complete.

Recommendation : That game be bundled with Robin Hood and set up for in store auction.

Condition : Box worn with some split corners. Game itself in fair condition with minor tears on some question/answer sheets.

Components : Complete, but showing some wear.

Recommendation : That game be put up for sale at usual price ($2.00+).

Condition : Box in excellent condition with no split corners. Game itself in excellent condition.

Components : Missing one peg. markers which does not impact greatly on game play.

Recommendation : Put up for sale at usual price ($2.00+).

For the love of all that is Holy, please don't let them toss incomplete games into the dumpster!

Experienced thrift store shoppers will buy two or more incomplete games and assemble a playable copy.

What's the name of the shop? Do you get a lot of games in? I'm on that side of the border visiting relatives about once a month and I'm always looking for new places to thrift and poke around.

Welland Christian Benefit Shop,
53 Southworth Street North,
Welland, ON L3B 1Y3

The shop is run by the Mennonite Central Committee who operate similar thrift shops across Canada and the U.S.

The winter months tend to be slow for donations, but with the warmer weather they will pick up again. At times quite a few games come in, but mostly Canadian editions with a sprinkle of Eurogames.

I have always found the shops in Niagara Falls, Ontario to have a surprisingly good selection of games at times.

I believe incomplete games are only discarded if they cannot be resold (staining, mold, etc.). Usable parts are saved for future use.
