All Aboard!!! Bruce's Top 25 Railroad Games

Railroad games are perhaps my favorite genre of game overall. The silly little choo-choo game has evolved into a family of games which includes everything from fast-paced action to auctions to resource management to fairly complex economic simulations. Too bad real railways aren't flourishing nearly as well as rail games!

It won't take many of you long to notice that the whole 1830 family of games is missing from this list. I've played 1830 just once, and didn't really get it to click, so I need to try again.

Anyhow, I consider the top dozen or so of these games to be great games, and the rest at least very good.

Anyone who knows me knew which game would be first on this list -- my all-time favorite game! For added challenge (die-hard fans of the game only!) see my description of Super Sadistic Advanced Empire Builder under the listing for this game. Play with the old metal trains if possible -- the cheap plastic pawns now sold with the game are junk -- you can't even tell which way your train is moving!

I covered the board (original game) with acetate and mounted it on illustration board. I use china markers to draw the rail lines and they erase easily on the acetate. The trains are painted as real RR companies. I had a group of guys at Station #1 that loved this game and we played it to death. Since I transferred the game (unfortunatelly) doesn't see action anymore.

China markers work well on the puzzle cut boards. Water soluble overhead markers (Vis-a-Vis) work well on the laminated roll up boards.

I'll have to agree. Empire Builder is by far the favorite of the series for me. It also happens to be the number one game in my collection.
2. Board Game: British Rails [Average Rating:6.77 Overall Rank:817]

British Rails is the only other Empire Builder series game to crack my top 25 rail games, and it does so with gusto. The map (in the old version of the game, which is all I've ever played) is challenging and fun. None of the later games in the series came close to recreating this level of excitement, in my opinion.

I've played Empire Builder, British Rails, EuroRails, Iron Dragon, Australian Rails, and India Rails, and I think India Rails is the best. The geography just seems to work better.

Hmm. I like British Rails considerably less than Empire Builder, Eurorails, and Nippon Rails; so much so that I gave my copy away a few months ago.

I'm intrigued by the high regard for India Rails here.

I admit that in large part, I'm biased in favor of Empire Builder and British Rails because of the components of the older versions, which are much nicer all around than the cheap stuff Mayfair's put out more recently. I have and play with the old EB and BR sets, but all the others, such as India Rails, have the plastic pawns, plastic commodity chips (usually without the names for the products) and the hopelessly disfunctional molded plastic box dividers (which I discard anyway). Heck, even the new maps have mileposts too close together, making it harder to play. If only Mayfair had kept up the quality! But that does play a role, fairly or not, in how I view the various games in the series.

India Rails is easily the second most played in the series in my household. As already mentioned, the geography seems to work really well. As for British Rails, it's okay, but not as highly regardged in our household.

Alan Moon's best game ever, very approachable for serious and casual gamers alike. It's a crisp, clean, easy-to-learn system with lots of tension and difficult decisions. Very deserving winner of the 2004 Spiel des Jahres award! Too bad about the 80-point score track in the first edition, though, which makes the scoring a bit confusing even for a math guy like me. (When will game companies learn that 50 and 100 are good, easy-to-use score track lengths?)

The best of many very good railroad games from Winsome, and in fact, my current favorite two-player game overall. You and your opponent race to be first to build a transcontinental rail line in 19th-century North America, battling rough terrain, indians, derailments, disease, and everything else imaginable. The game goes slowly at first, but most of the bad cards are one-use only so eventually progress will be made. Play the Standard Game as opposed to the Short Game, because some of the strategies don't have time to pay off in the shorter version. Actually, my ambition now is to play the Campaign Game, which should take at least six hours. Thankfully, my wife likes the game too and will play!

By the way, John Bohrer at Winsome Games went out of his way to be extremely helpful in answering the many questions and comments I had regarding this game.

You spotted the only error in all the Winsome Games' rulesets. Keep it a secret, OK? Very few people buy an 18 hour 2 player train game. Even fewer can play it in 6 hours! Fewer than that with their wife. Lucky guy...

This deep game offers the aspect of player roles, which is not something I'm usually that fond of. (Maybe that's why I rate Puerto Rico lower than many others do.) But this game offers a lot of depth for thinking players.

You might appreciate the game more if you think of the actions less as "roles" and more as areas of priority for your company. It's rather abstracted but not totally artificial or unrealistic.

An advanced economic game of railroad companies and conglomerates. Key decisions include when and how to merge railroads, and when to convert shares. Very involved; definitely not for beginning gamers.

Ya know, I really ought to give 1830 another go -- if I can handle Landerbahnen, I can handle that.

And for something totally different -- a murder mystery set on board a moving train! A lot like Clue, but more fun. Randy and Rachel Cox taught me this on one of my visits to their house, and I greatly enjoyed it. The game comes with ten mysteries, so long-term replay value is limited.

I picked this game up and ordered a bunch of expansions from the company about 10 years ago -- it is quite fun. We've ruled that trains stop at the borders and all borders also have telegraph offices -- otherwise, we tend to still be working on the mystery by the time we get to Istanbul and have to wend our way back a few cities.

I'm afraid I have to correct you. The two games do not share the same designer. Dirk Henn designed Metro, while Stefan Dorra designed Streetcar.

And though both games share a similar theme as well as the tile-laying mechanic to develop routes, the gameplay for each is quite different. I think that Streetcar plays better with five or six players while Metro plays best with four or less.

I played this (Two Wolf version) 10 years ago (or maybe more). Back then, it didn't seem so bad to waste away a whole afternoon with this game. Nowadays, I'd just hurl all over the board. Or at least bow out of the game. Games of that length just don't do it for me anymore.

I don't get it. I have no problem with games of this length. It's games that are this long -- and dull to boot, that I have a problem with.

Bill Eldard

It was fresh and fun when it was first published, but there are so many better RR games out there now, and at many degress of complexity. Rail Baron suffers from the same malady as Monopoly --- the first half of the game is far more fun than the last half. :(

You REALLY need to play 18xx. Try 18GA or 18AL or 18SCAN all three are excellent introductions to the genre and take under 3 hours to complete (even for new players).

Also, c'mon, Union Pacific (when played with the optional rule distributing the scoring cards evenly thru the deck) is vastly superior to the entertaining TtR and is arguably the most fun game ever produced. -- PAE

Not me, but during World DipCon in Chapel Hill in 2004, I visited my uncle in Raleigh who has a backyard setup, very nice. A mix of hardware built up from kits and his own scale engineering. Includes a model of the Vestal NY train station from which he and my aunt left for their honeymoon. It's way way cool, but he's not a boardgamer.

When I was much younger, we had an HO scale layout in the garage. We didn't actually run it all that often, but we did have a great deal of fun building up the locale. Then we moved to a smaller house . . . :soblue:
