I have spent some time getting some of the kids I teach interested in boardgames and would like to expand the games that are available. I have converted Samurai, Medina and Through the Desert fairly successfully to pencil and paper versions (see http://mysite.mweb.co.za/residents/cg23/Paper_and_Pencil_Gam...) which make it much cheaper and easier to work with in class and encourage interest in the Wargames Club on some afternoons. I am looking for recommendations for other tile-laying or card games that I could similarly modify to fit on to paper like the ones mentioned above. Any and all suggestions would be welcome (as would commentary on the games I have already modified)

Huh. I also created a P&P version of this, although mine keeps track of things like remaining camels in each color, and has a nifty scoring area for each player. I'll upload it too.

Many years ago, I used to play Twixt on a grid of dots printed out on computer output paper. I remember playing a game every lunchtime with a co-worker, for several months. It works pretty well if you ignore the rule about removing links. (We never had that situation arise in the many games we played).

This is how the Little Golem server has implemented the game. They even call it "Twixt PP" where PP stands for pencil and paper. Links are never removed, but your OWN links are allowed to cross each other. Crossed links are not necessarily connected; to win you must have a sequence of pegs, each linked to the next, which begins in one of your border rows and ends in the other. For example, the winning path might loop across itself. For the vast majority of games, none of these link-related rules would make any difference in the game outcome, but you might get one game where it would, so whatever rules you use, make sure everyone understands.

And I hope you tell them about the pie rule also, which is much more important...

The printable boards are now available in the Twixt Files section. Maybe this would be easier on the eyes than graph paper or a hand-drawn grid of dots.

Don't forget the pie rule a.k.a the swap rule a.k.a one-move equalization. Suppose black (filled in circle) moves first. Immediately after the first move, the second player has the option to swap sides. This makes the game much more balanced and interesting.

Café Race is a race game set in a business office, design by Fran F Garea. The players take the role of office workers going upstairs to the first floor to get a cup of coffee who then improvise a race while they are going back downstairs… with a cup full of coffee. The player that makes it to the bottom of the stairs and spills the least amount of coffee wins.

Auf Heller & Pfennig lends itself quite well to the P&P format. You can either use a randomization table for the tiles, or play the pure-strategy version. Not tough at all.

Not only -can- it be played P&P, the original version was almost entirely P&P. You'd just need to keep track of how many materials and how much money a person had from month to month, and the cost of raw materials. Simple.

Either you need two colours of pen or (simpler to draw but more confusing) use squared paper and simply draw a diagonal line in each square to divide it into two regions. Draw both diagonals for the cross piece.

Already available as a print and play game, this abstract tile laying strategy game can be played on any piece of graph paper limiting the players to the "tile" selection available. Make a frame to create the 6x6 grid area (because the area that the game is played in can float).

Very fine idea, and three very good games to start with. I hope you can do more of these. I would like to contribute, and maybe I can work something up, although my time is very limited. I hope others jump on this bandwagon.

Buggrit. Sorry but I typed a long response and then my browser froze. I'll try again.

I have enjoyed the discussion that this list has encouraged and hope to see some of Thedalek's (Paul) work. Clearly some serious thinking has gone into the conversions and the possible implications of such.

I want to differ slightly from his approach though so let me give you a background. I enjoyed playing various pen and pencil games but found them fundementally unsatisfying like noughts and crosses against yourself.

What I enjoy about gaming is assessing a game situation and then making a meaningful response to it. I was disappointed when I looked for this experience on the net finding only two games that had been developed recently and neither adequately met my requirements (Goulash and some Russian Numbers Game)

A friend of mine from work and I play on a regular basis but sometimes it is impractical to play so we exchange turns via the P&P versions I have modified.

Thus my thinking is slightly different to that of Paul's: I think many of the games can be modified to P&P despite the fact that they may be changed in the conversion - I am looking for the game experience even if the flavour is slightly different.

So I will tackle the T&E challenge though, as Paul warns, it is not practical to expect it to work as it stands now. On the other hand some Game is better than no Game at all.

Goulash is interesting, but is really nothing more than glorified Battleship. One player hides things, the other player seeks/avoids them blindly.

The Russian Numbers Game you refer to: Could that be Sudoku (which is, in fact, American in origin, rather than Japanese as the name suggests)? If so, I might suggest other games currently licensed by Nikoli? Check out http://www.puzzle.jp for more of these.

Understand that these P&P versions are not meant to be solitaire versions of games, but conversions of games so as to be playable with a pencil, paper, and the requisite number of players (and possibly, as is the case with some of my conversions, dice).

I went back onto the net and tracked down the russian game - it's called Oflameron and can be found:

It is okay but seems dry and a little too luck based in my opinion.

BTW Paul, Have your submissions been approved yet?
