This is the traditional weekly thrift and bargain finds list.
These lists may start empty, but as always, add your items.
Put in what you consider a bargain, tell us how much you paid and the place you got it from. Bargains can be thrift store finds or any second-hand purchases or discounted boardgames bought new. Don't forget to add your encounters with the Thrift Store Irritant Squad and any other embellishments in order to make it even more interesting.
The Thrift Store/Bargain Finds List Wayback Machine: The Grand Vizier is maintaining a list of all the weekly lists through time. He is also adding stats and interesting tidbits for us thrifty geeks. Your Thrift Store Bargain Finds Through Time (with links to all previous lists)
Our GeekGuild: Welcome to The Ancient and Loyal Order of Thrifters. Enter the halls of thriftdom at your own risk. Please do mind the stacks of prized games, do not mention the musty smell and try not to sneeze. Make sure to bow before our King HakFoo I, and pay your due respects to previous Kings belial1134, Great_Mazinga, minionhunter, Krazygit, EvilTimmy and Blackwind.
The Order's Anthem: Sing along with our good old thrifty theme song...
"If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world."
“Some men see things as they are and ask why. Others dream things that never were and ask why not.”
GW 3.99$ this is the one in the tin, complete except - missing three cards but this thing retailed at $60+ when I was at Disneyland last month and its only $2.50 to replace the cards from Hasbro so I couldn't pass it up. It will be a great family game
I found a Scrabble at the GW outlet today. It's No. 71 Deluxe Scrabble and there is no image of it in the DB... I checked all 45 pages of photos! However, I did find a picture of the scoring tile racks included in the box.
Ninety-nine cents at a small independent thrift. Looks to be in very good condition, but it's really difficult to tell if all of the parts are there or not. No diagrams, everything is conveyed via text. And the game has many small plastic pieces. I really need a diagram.
Definitely missing the red player pawn, other than that it's a pretty full box. Picked it up just because of the 3-D-ness of it.
Nasty drive home today, where it seemed that every driver in my vicinity took leave of their brains and descended to full on idiot mode. OR they had something against me, and wanted to completely cheese me off.
So to calm myself down, I stopped by the Value Village just off the direct route home. HOPEFULLY there's something good for me there.
Ah, yes. I do believe that this qualifies. BUT....what's that rattle sound? This game isn't supposed to have metal parts. Better crack the tape and make sure that the game is actually in the box.
Sure looks like it. Oh, and the source of the rattle is obvious, now. The previous owners have left 27 pennies inside. And once again, the Value Village stocking staff has shown an astonishing horrible attention to detail in checking for completeness. Didn't they know that these pennies could be exchanged for certain goods and services? Or put in the donation box for the charity that they purport to support.
Oh well, the pennies will be dropped into the Pennies for CHEO bowl the next time I'm at the comic shop. That's the "Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario" for those who don't know. The comic shop doesn't accept or hand out pennies for cash transactions, and any difference in what they have in the till compared to what their receipts say goes to the hospital. Oh, plus any change dropped into the bowl. They raise hundreds of dollars every year doing this.
But I digress. I found a Rail Baron, in quite nice (but not great) condition, for $3 minus 27 cents. Complete. Yippie.
And with this, my third find of this classic game, I'm prepared to crown myself "King of the Rail Baron". All bow before me and my rail baronny ways!
OK, fine. I'll make it "official" and check my database. A mere formality, I'm sure. Let's see....
select username,count(*) from finds where objectname = 'Rail Baron' group by username order by count desc limit 1;
Sorry your highness. I never meant to intrude on your kingdom.
Turns out, I'm not even in second. Since the start of the lists until the end of 2011, newboy1721, artfuldodge2 and edosan each found four, while statman8, MartinStever, petegrey and herman_the_german have three.
