Press Rewind: Games that require a VCR

Inspired by the thread http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/91518 about DVD games. There was quite some comparison drawn between DVD games and their VCR-based predecessors. The general concensus was that the VCR games were of mediocre quality at best, and left to a fate of obscurity and thrift store fare.

Having played one or two VCR games in the past, I looked for a Geeklist about VCR games, only to find none. This list fills that void. Please feel free to add to it.

And don't forget, Betamax counts, too!

(I've been trying to include images that show the tape itself.)

I've had the whole series, and this one is really nasty, as they turn the players against each other. In the rest of the VCR-based ones, you are working together..kind of. In this one, some players end up working for the game.

Here is another game requiring a VCR.

My copy has the tape but not the mini's

Oh, bother!

The video that accompanies this game is excellent for creating the atmosphere and explaining how to play the game. You watch it and then play the game. It is not used while you are playing.

As Richard said, the tape is not used to play the game. I would debate whether it sets up the atmosphere for play but it hardly explains how to play except in the broadest strokes possible. If you look closely at the game materials shown, they don't always match what comes in the box.

Oh yeah:

* Owl Bears do not Talk.
* Nor are they in the game.

Thank you and good night. :D

Video has nothing to do with the game really. But it's great to watch during a night on the piss.

Another example of blatant merchandising. Makes me want to be a beatnik.

Robocop had that bald tough guy look a decade before Vin Diesel made it look cool.

In the empire of craptacular games, this is Emperor Palpatine. Good god, this game is wretched. To top off everything else, even the videotape function is barely usable. You have to fast forward the tape until you get to a segment thatapplies to the part of town your Robocop is in. Oh, and the game pieces? Not li'l Robocops, oh no... they are little plastic meeple mockups of Ford Tauruses, the cop cars from the movie. Ugh.

This is a good game, but it's almost essential to buy the extra packs (there's six I think, one for each character.) However, I bought the first extra pack, which was Baron Samedi IIRC, and it made things LOADS more complicated by adding an extra deck of cards and weird rules. They should have just replaced the video and the Time cards. Still, good times.

AND David Prowse in the Vader suit. Bonus!

I love playing this one, but you have to be in the right frame of mind, perhaps even just slightly drunk. "Yes, Lord Vader?"

I need to get the tape converted to DVD so I can play it with my kids one day. Whenever I have kids.

In the course of the game, one of the players will turn to the Dark Side. Let's just say that Vader has a classic tie-breaker...

I recently bought this at a thrift store since it is a Sid Sackson game. I tossed the tape in, it worked, and I instantly started trying to figure out how to either :
A) burn this onto a DVD
B) change the game so that the video was not needed.

no luck on doing either one yet.

My friend Rich has burned this one onto DVD. It makes what I think is a fun game all the better--no more watching needless scenes in fast forward! Also, it makes the game last 1/2 as long.

Whether gamers or non-gamers regard them better/worse than standard boardgames. For instance, is the new Clue with an included DVD better than the original?

Actually, it is. I had the privilege of playtesting the American version and find that it actually has less luck involved (though it's stil present) and the mysteries are more interesting. The animation isn't going to win any awards, but it helped put Clue back on my "playlist", so to speak.

i always liked this one back in the day. i even named my Blood Bowl league team after a quote from the game. After a surfer bails at one point, the screen has the comment "Liquid Tragedy". I thought that would be a good name for my dark elf team.

We played this a fair amount back in the late '80s. You watch a quick series of pictures, then pick them out from your cards. It was fun, and good for all ages.

I must get around to uploading a photo of the promotional t-shirt for this. I won it, with the gam, at an exhibition game in a record shop when this was first released. I used to have a bunch of posters, but I think they got turfed the last time we moved house. I currently have two boxes, but can't find the video or rules. I was happy to have won my copy, I don't think I would have wanted to pay much for it little worm!

My friend and I got so hung up on one line of dialogue that the Gatekeeper says, it has stayed with us and still gets used to this day.

"I've been so bad.... but now... I choose...to be GOOD!"

It helps if you know how the Gatekeeper sounds when he says it.

I've played this one a few times. This is a cooperative game, with all players racing each other to defeat a common enemy, which hosed players via the videotape.

One of the games I remember best was due to one incident of foul language in front of children. The game was progressing slowly for us, and the interruptions from our VCR-generated Klingon adversary were becoming steadily more annoying. My father responded to one interruption by hollering out "What do you want, you Klingon a**hole?!?!?" in front of myself, my younger brother and his friend, all about 12 or under. My mother then turned to Dad with an exclamation of shock and a look that I now know to be "You will be sleeping on the couch tonight". Ah, my formative years!

There are some cool things about this one, like when they speed up time on you. That's a big pit-o-suck.

"Experience Biiiijjjjjjjjj".

..and the game has stickers that you are to use as communicators that you are supposed to touch when answering.
