The inspiration for this list. Played this game today. WOW. I wanted to play it 10 more times. I managed to convince my group to play it twice more. I didn't even win any of the games (but lost one by a letter on the card), but I was still totally enamoured and wanted to keep playing. And I NEVER replay games, even games I love.

It is the perfect short game. So many important and interesting decisions crammed into 30 minutes or less.

I played this at BGG Con and had to get my hands on a copy. The rules of communication stop one person dominating this cooperative game, and unless you agree on some conventions of information before you start you get to watch people wrestle with delicious ambiguity

The game is so simple and elegant I was amazed nobody had thought of it before, but once I played it, it was like it had always existed.

This is the last one that truly blew me away. I've played several good games since this, but this one just grabs me in a way that so few other games do. I find it especially notable that this is practically an "event game" - meaning that it doesn't get played at a game night, but rather that it gets played when we decide to have a Dominant Species night. For a game this long to run so smoothly and leave you feeling satisfied with how you spent the last several hours just blew me away.

1849 is the most recent game upon which I have bestowed a 9 rating. A nasty little game of railroading for 3 or 4 to 5 players on a claustrophobic island.

I put together a PnP copy using files found here on the Geek. PnP Productions made a mounted map for me. I printed, laminated, and cut the other components. I'm glad I took the time to put this one together!

Edit: Corrected the player count.

Though, I've raised ratings on a couple others (La Revolution Francaise,
La Grande Guerre) recently, because of how much I've been
willing to come back to play them.

Really though, a game doesn't earn a '9' or '10' rating from
me all of a sudden - and HIS' 9 is pretty impressive given
how quickly it launched into that realm.

Every time I play this game, it gets more interesting. The positioning, the posturing, the bluffing, the double think, the probing, the flanking, and the possibilities of variation in a game without randomness and with only 3 basic types of units.

I played this one in Essen 2009, and I soooooo wanted it, but I had to wait for the English-language edition, otherwise there'd be very few people I could play this with. I waited for months... (and then the English translation was pretty bad cry)

I still love this game, it's the only one I've rated a 10.

Two condenders: Antiquity reprint (Essen 2011 loot) and Eclipse (got my copy Jan 2012).

Antiquity edges by a nose. After seemingly innonent 1st play session this game started haunting me with its possibilities, strategies and overall nyances. It really made you think and analyse your game afterwards. Funnily I think that this kind of "feeling" (where you CARE) the game manages to create feels more like "accident" rather than thoughtful and tested implementation (well the best inventions are caused by accident...). This makes game all heart rather than execution of an engineer.

Antiquity regurarly pops into my mind and I want to play it again soon!
Only excessive chitcounter fiddling prevents '10' from me....

Eclipse is great but it was more about "I expected it to be great and it was" when Antiquity was more like "this must be good...." and after 1st play: "I really did not expect that kind of greatness"

I picked this game up on a whim for three reasons:
1. It played solo and my gaming gf and I had just broken up.
2. DoubtofBuddha highly recommended it.
3. I got it at my FLGS for $48 (below anything I'd seen online).

I didn't have particular high hopes for it but it looked interesting. I played every night for the first three or four nights, staying up past 1:00 to finish each game. Since then I've calmed down a bit, but it still an amazing gaming and one of my top two games of 2011.

My mind was blown away. One of the best games in the history of mankind.

It has strategy and tactics beyond your imagination. It has esthetics and culture. It has philosophy and meditation. It is (incredibly) old and fresh at the same time. It has simple rules and deep gameplay.

Just perfect!

I'm going to have to go with this one.

While I am only so-so on deck building games, this one has really caught my attention.

Most desk building games have you buy/build a deck in an effort to try and beat your opponent. The deck building in this game comes from you creating your own deck to try and beat the scenarios. They are diverse scenarios, so different decks from different spheres of influence are needed for those scenarios.

It really has changed the way I look at a deck builder.

I was a relative latecomer to this game, only got it in April 2011 - I know that because that was shortly before I logged 30-ish plays in one month. Ordered and hunted all the expansions for it, and meanwhile I've found a regular gaming partner - yay.

What really strikes me as utterly awesome about this game is the perfect balance it manages to find between simple rules and deep gameplay, between luck-based dice rolls in combat and strategy in hand and troop management, in which units you use for what, and in where you commit or retreat your forces.

I can thoroughly suggest the strategy articles in this game's forum, some of them are quite awesome.
