After my dad passed away, we had to go through our old garage and clean everything out to move. I nabbed all the old board games I could find, and here's what I found. Most of them will probably go onto Ebay, but I definitely found a few gems. There were a few that weren't in the 'Geek database, so I've left them off, but may add them later if I add the games.

Bantu is a very original race game which was once featured in either The Gamer or Games International. I recommend that you play before you trade it away. One thing to consider - I found that the game plays better if you are allowed to pass through opposing players pawns rather than treat them as total blocks.

Oh I played MANY a game of this when I was much younger. No telling where my copy went. My younger sister probably dismantled it into diconnected molecules.

Not related to Tantrix. If you've actually got Kaliko (pictured) rather than Psyche-Paths, you'll make a nice return on Ebay. I've seen Kaliko go for as much as $80, whereas Psyche-Paths is basicly worthless. An example of the materials making the game.

Funny story about this game. There was once a Spielfrieks thread about pre-Euro games that credited the designer, and I noted that Vector not only credited the designer (back in the early '70s!), but even featured his photo and a brief bio. Someone else Googled the designer's name and joked that he had the same name as the attorney who represented Amy Fischer, the "Long Island Lolita", and who later had an affair with her.

Well, on the game bio, it mentioned that the inventor was an attorney who got his law degree from Brooklyn Law School. Brooklyn is right next to Long Island. Furthermore, they shared the same first name, last name, and middle initial. Put 2+2 together, and we realized that the inventor of this game was indeed the same person who "grew up" decades later to represent (and fool around with) Amy Fischer.

Game designers. Such scum!

I believe the first Dip game comes in a white box. It is very much more rare than the pictured box. I have only seen it a couple of times. It is copyrighted if memory serves me as 1959 by the designer with an address listed somewhere in MA. Please forgive me if I am a little off but it is quite rare. One sold at the GenCon auction about 2-3 years ago in the $100-200 range.

I like how it's by the "Maufacturers of Monopoly." Like it's important who ponied (ha ha) up the money, not who designed the game.

Evidence of my dad's early involvement in environmental causes. I'm guessing the game isn't very exciting either- people may complain about the themes of some modern Euros, but I'd rather play a game based on power distribution than a game about Smog.

I still have this one. The only thing this game teaches you is that you can't beat the game. The winning conditions are almost impossible. Same for it's sister game Dirty Water.

Original edition, my dad has signed it in the corner. Reminds me of when he was talking about hanging out with Gary Gygax at a convention and so I said "You know Gary Gygax? Why didn't you ever tell me?" to which he responded "You never asked!" I imagine it would have been the same if I had asked him why he never told me he played Acquire, one of my favorite games of all time.

My condolences on the loss of your father. Any chance you ever got to play any of these games with him? And any ideas into how/why he had such a diverse collection? I would be interested in hearing more about that. I am not familiar with his writings. Not much of a fiction reader. My wife makes up for me in reading fiction.

I remember the "Well World" stories has a kind of game-playing feeling to them - learning to cope with new rules.

Condolences and thank you for sharing this list.

Thank you all for your kind words. His choice of games definitely influenced his writing especially considering the Well World is on a hex map. (One of the other good finds from the garage is what I believe to be his original hand drawn map of the Well World.)

The only one of these games that I knew he played was Diplomacy, which he ran a very long running PBM game of. The games we played together when I was younger were more traditional parlor games like Chess and Cribbage whereas I played less abstract stuff like Monopoly and Careers with my mother.

At his funeral, one of his friends told me a good story about the competetive nature that runs in my family: he used to play Bridge with my dad, my grandfather, and my grandmother. If my dad or grandfather would say anything, my grandmother would yell at them to cut out the tabletalk. Meanwhile, she was kicking her partner under the table to signal a good hand.
