Between 1977 and 1987 Games Workshop's magazine White Dwarf reviewed board games, along with the role-playing games which were the main focus of the magazine. Issues numbers that do not appear had no board game reviews in them.

There are also some comments from Charles Vasey who briefly had a column in the magazine. Review ratings, especially of GW and Citadel products should be taken with a grain of salt. However the revies of Talisman and Warhammer shown below look pretty impartial. In issue 88 WD "admitted" to being a house magazine, and by issue 94 there were no longer reviews, and only previews of GW products.

Ratings are shown out of 10 when given, and prices shown in Pounds. I've also added the reviewer's name. It's mostly Fantasy and SF games, but there are a few non-genre reviews, too. Disagree violently with the opinions anything here?

Not a bad game, even with the lame Star Trek rip off cover.

The whole bloody game was a Star Trek homage...

and an excellent one at that...

I'd love to see a revised edition with modern production values.

My opinion of this game is quite different from that of the reviewer. I rated it a 7 on BGG's scale. This game is interesting for an occasional play, especially if the players create teams and play a season of games, tracking injuries, etc. If you can get it for $10-15, I recommend it.

I had this game a long time ago. I completely forgot about it! Can't even remember if it was any good or not (though if I can't remember it...)

I've always been a big fan, and most people I've introduced it to over the years enjoy it at least somewhat. The biggest pain in the butt is how many charts have to be consulted in the course of any given action. It can really bog down the action. If that could be effectively streamlined, I think more people would enjoy it.

"The high proportion of Weird Groups in this selection may shift balance in favour of the Discordian Society; so be it, balance is a secondary consideration here."
Phil Masters.

Plus generally positive Charles Vasey reviews of Sanctuary and Consulting Detective (both later received full reviews).

Its major success is the excellent way in which the gamer is encouraged to play those different roles. The only other real threat to Dune's supremacy is probably Mythology."

Funny enough, I like this game...

It was my first to have cooperative play as essential to victory, despite having an individual winner.

It is enjoyable enough, and the solitaire game is worth the price of asdmission alone. Too bad the pieces in the early edition were 110# card...

Obviously Mr. Aston didn't play SFB at the time.

In their day, they were so far an advancement that playing without them was anathema to many players. Funny, but all SSD's in the following two editions used the same format.

This is a great list! I was nearly ovecome by nostalgia going through the entries. This was when I first got exposed to GW, which was then a very friendly (in a genuine way;)) corner shop in Hammersmith, London. I still have some of these White Dwarf magazines and some of these games, including Warhammer 1st edition (I was one of the first to buy it).
