The History of BoardGameGeek: 2000-2003

Although I am not a user that has been around for years (Registration Date: 2004-07-25), I have seen quite some changes to the Geek. And of course: a lot of discussion with every change. But what about the early years? When were certain features added?
Right now we are all arguing what is best for BGG with every feature that is added or changed. But it all started somewhere. Thanks to www.archive.org/web/web.php, we can all see where it started. So here's a little BGG History.
I only took 2000-2003; maybe I'll do 2004-2006 another day. If this has been done before, please provide a link; I couldn't find any. Please add if I missed something. Or provide more information (especially those of you who have been around longer), as I wasn't around in 'the early years'. The quotes I used are Aldie's and Derk's in BGG News.

"During one of the Metrogamers game sessions, I mentioned to Derk that I was running this website and with a little modification and hacking I could get it working for board games. . . . wouldn't that be cool!? He was interested, because he was also coming up with game categorization and a rating scheme for board games. We decided to merge forces where I would program the site, and Derk would pump in content. We initially used Derk's Metrogamer session reports and some reviews written by Metrogamer Neil Carr and himself. Initially we had about 100 articles and enough content to launch BoardGameGeek in January 2000."

July 9, 2000: Forums
"Forums have now opened up, and have also been linked into the database. You can create a comment on any review/preview/session report in the database and the information will be kept in the forums. There is also a marketplace for posting of games for sale/trade. If you have any feedback, there is a message board for letting us know what you would like to see next on the BoardgameGeek."

July 27, 2000: User Game Submissions
To keep the site up to date and complete, users can now submit games themselves. Probably one of the most important features on this site. No GeekGold for submitting though.

January 12, 2001: Upload pictures
"Well, I added one of those new features I was threatening to do. You can now upload pictures to the database."
Which still causes a lot of discussion. "This picture is too small. It's not relevant. It's blurry. It has a cat on it." Recently it changed to users approving the pictures; it caused more discussion. But I like it.

Another useful feature: users can now add links to the gamepages. And there is a "GeekTicker". Never saw that one; probably didn't last long.

August 19, 2001: Collection and Ratings
Two of the most important features on BGG.
Ratings. Has anything been more discussed? But here they are. And collections:
"Thanks to some excellent suggestions from Ray Mulford, the ability to edit your collection under the games is now available. When you sign into the website, the collection utilities become visible under any game. You can add your rating/want/sale/trade/own list. You can also put in your opinion on what you think the min/max optimal players should be for that game."
The last one was lost because it was too subjective.

November 24, 2001: FAQ
BGG FAQ has always been under fire. Once in a while you get: "why not update it"? I believe it is still under consideration. And anyone know something about BGG Wiki?

Renamed GeekMail. I believe it was in GeekQuestions, someone asked: where do you go first when visiting BGG? Most people answered: GeekMail.

July 12, 2002: GeekGold
Another item that is discussed intensely.
"- You will always get at least 1 gold for any review or image uploaded. - You will have 7 days to claim some gold offered after the first person as laid claim to it. So you don't have to "be in the right place at the right time." - You will be getting another 10 gold to spend every few days. I will see how often this needs to be updated. - You can't spend gold you claim.
Things To Do: - Put gold on translations, player aids, & session reports. - Make it so you can't claim your own gold. - Make a "Gold Collectors" page to show who has collected the most gold.
Thanks to Greg Alekenevicus for helpful ideas on this system.
Remember, it's all for fun!"

January 23, 2003: Journals
"Whipped up a quick little feature for the database last night - GeekJournals. This is basically a way for you to keep a journal on BGG. Journals are public and do not necessarily have to be related to gaming. I will be adding some features to this system in the future (such as tracking and customization).
Happy Journaling!"

June 30, 2003: Correlations
Something I only discovered a few months ago (thanks to RPardoe), but is now (temporarily?) gone.
"An addition to the correlation feature has been implemented and put into each user's profile section and the new correlation search page. Clicking on the Matchmaker link will list off the best games that match between you and the other user. Enjoy! and many thanks to Randy Cox for the great feature suggestion!"

Augus 1, 2003: Rate it or Not
Instead of Hot or Not: "Last night I whipped up a quick page based on the famous "Hot Or Not" idea. Check out Rate It Or Not if you get a chance. This will let you rate games that you haven't rated. You can also revisit games you have already rated."

September 22, 2003: Wishlist
"I added a WishList feature over the weekend. The idea was presented to me last Christmas by Carrie Ives who wanted a way to see a list of games that she could buy for someone.
A year later and I finally got a round tuit. You can add games to your wishlist by clicking on the checkbox titled "Add to Wishlist" from any of the game pages in the Collection area (near the bottom), and then click the 'Submit' button. Check out your profile page and click on the Wishlist link to see an expanded version of your list with options to remove items and email the list to your wishbringers."
