All of the games listed can be found on sourceforge.net. There are many good games that I haven't listed so feel free to add them. I have left off the 1 million versions of Chess and Monopoly type games.

I am actually interested in programming a few games if anyone else is interested feel free to email me. The tigrisgame listed below is no longer opensource but the older verison that this list links to has a BSD license which I would like to fork and make a better version of. It has some gui and ai bugs. All of which have been majorly improved in the non-opensource version.

MegaMek is a 2-player network multiplayer version of Battletech, inclusive of all level 1, most level 2 and some level 3 rules. Thousands of units are built into the game, you can select a map, turn headshots/pushing off the map on or off, and tweak other askpects. It's written in pure Java and runs on any computer with a JVM (no need to DL seperate versions...i use it from a USB thumbdrive on both a Mac and a Windows PC) and it's open source.

It fits into the list perfectly.

It's not completely Open Source. One thing Rodney has done is to make the logging proprietary. I disagree with this practice but understand why he's doing it. I just wish there was an option to make it XML or something to help link many files together, parse out statistics, etc.

Just like every previous attempt to create a computer version of Magic Realm, the Realms of Magic project began with great expectations, much enthusiasm, and rapid progress... but, also like every previous attempt, it has apparently died a slow, quiet death.

I think the sheer complexity of Magic Realm simply defeats any team-of-volunteer-programmers approach... the classic "too many cooks" problem.

In sharp contrast to this is Robin Warren's RealmSpeak project: a one-man effort to create a Java-based version of Magic Realm. RealmSpeak has made amazingly rapid progress and currently has a substantial portion of the boardgame's rules coded:

I second Robin's RealmSpeak as brilliant! Here's a very partial list of what he has implemented:

All the characters, monsters, and natives.
Combat including the optional fumble and stumble tables and native combat.
All the treasures.
Over 3/4 of the spells.

I can't do it justice. It's wonderful.

Realm Speak is pretty good, it's prone to crashing, not all the characters are "done" right. But as far as the best Magic Realm computer version, it is by far, the best, and will only get better with time as he impliments more and more. It's great if you want to learn how to play MR also, as the computer handles the rules beautifully and can get past that big learning curve for MR.

Well, it isn't open-source, but it IS free. My version of Can't Stop has a pretty challenging computer player, a couple of rule variations, and a very flexible display - you can change background colors and the size and shape of the board, as well as the speed of the computer players. You can also change the style of computer players, from "Timid" to "Bold".

For anyone who has an older version, I'd strongly suggest you download the newest version (6.0), which has improvements in every aspect of the game.

Wow, this is messed up! Erik and I must have posted comments at the exact same instance, and he got his name on both! I can't believe this never got fixed!

The first entry, for "Can't Stop", was made by me, actually.

Here's another version, written by me using Python/Tkinter. Not as polished as rollordont, but it's Free Software so you get to tinker with it as much as you want.

A rather good Excell file that allows you to play PR against the computer (3,4 or 5 player). The AI is not too bad. I cannot the 5 player version (yet).

I'm a bit surprised that this isn't already on the list. Full Thrust Java is a PBEM program at its base, but has all of the Full Thrust rules in the program (or nearly all - there are a few things still being tweaked I think). All the players have to do is input orders, and the game resolves them.

The webpage is here: http://home.nycap.rr.com/davisje/ftjava/

You can find an open-source implementation of this game for java with a decent AI at: http://colossus.sourceforge.net/

This also includes a network play feature.

This software does a great job in capturing the look and feel of the original game (which is one of my favourites).

Nice list - thanks for grouping these.

I'd like to mention Battle for Wesnoth. It's not based on a boardgame (as far as I know?) but it is Open Source and plays very much like a boardgame. It also supports multiplayer via IP.

There are several methods of playing Up Front on-line, the best of which (IMO) is a text-based Java program by Bruce Wigdor which lets you play in real time. Details available at:
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/upfront2000/pbemuf.htm

Bruce has also written programs for several CDGs, including Paths of Glory, which give a graphical interface for real-time play over the Net.

Amoeba Wars has two versions, and one is for the pocket PC. I submitted a screen shot of it but BGG rejected it since it was blurry. (just a shot of the Pocket PC with it running). Any future things I make will run for PPC, I am very committed to that. In the meantime I recommend "Slay" that is advertised on this site (top banners). It's great.
