We're all seeing a lot of Geeklists regarding the relatively new Kickstarter website, most dealing with what games were backed or which ones people look forward too. I felt like making the opposite.

Are there kickstarter projects I should have backed but didn't and am I kicking myself now?

Are there projects that were flawed out of the gate to the point where I felt I should chronicle the mistakes as a warning to future Kickstarters?

Or are some of these just ridiculous and need a public forum?

Maybe a bit of all three.

Feel free to add yours.

Guidelines for this Geeklist and how we can still get along:

1. This is a list for a Kickstarter project someone did not fund. It can mean they didn't like the project specifically, did not have enough money, or maybe that game wasn't their cup of tea. It does not have to mean they hate the game or will never buy it. In fact, originally I created it specifically to remember games I was tentative on funding but want to look up later.

2. Comments can be critical but I think most people here are pretty grown up. This is not intended as a "this is why other people should not fund." In fact the opposite, feel free to post on projects you've funded and why. I do however have a short temper when it comes to personal attacks of character. This is not an "I hate you because" geeklist. At the very least, I try and make my negative comments a little tongue-in-cheek to try and take a little of the sting out of them.

3. This is not a review or a preview. I imagine I'm like anyone else; I see a project, I spend 15-30 mins or so checking it out, I get an initial impression. Sometimes I'll double check it or check the BBG listing. I am almost positive some of us don't fully understand a game or project and that is at least, partially our fault. Oh well. It is also partially the projects responsibility to help limit our ability to miss important details which may make the difference in us funding them.

What looked interesting: Beyond the two guys talking in the video and the music, the editing and cuts look very professional.

The artwork looks fantastic.

3-5 players, woot!

What looked "meh": Even though this is probably the best example of people shooting themselves for the video, it's still cheesy.

The name "Zoneplex"... problematic.

What looked very concerning: The game combines the mechanics/is a "mash up" of Carcassone,1960: the making of the president, Munchkin?!, and some Swedish dungeon crawler?!?? Wait... what?!

Looks like an abstract but plays like a wargame... or... how does it play again?

What looked interesting: Artwork. Is it me or do other companies need to start taking a look at some of these indi projects to get it right, start hiring some of these people!

Cheap!

Plays fast.

What looked Meh: The $90 pledge. There is something both very intruiging and disappointing on this being the highest pledge. From a value standpoint we save 6 bucks, have a ton of extra copies, and get a PDF (no signed copy??)

Stretch goal "extra cards." So I'm going to pick on this project but the gripe goes further than this, stop making exclusives in KS for main game components! "If you back us, we'll throw in a few extra cards you can't get otherwise." Even though I fall for it on the projects I do back, something about this really irritates me.

What looked very concerning: Maybe I'm getting old but I didn't see an expected date for delivering the product. For a light low-dollar game, it's hard for me to get too excited and therefore I don't know if I'd want to wait when there are 100 such games I can grab anywhere.

It looks like Flux+Bohnanza... IE too much luck in gameplay.

The accent in the KS video. Why...

What looked interesting: It's, um, cheap?

What looked "meh": Ok, the artwork is great however think about the format? This seems like not much more than just an artist putting his outwork out there but there are better ways to do it.

The video. As a TV commercial, this would actually work in todays day and age. However, this isn't a commercial. Think of it more like a board meeting, where you are pitching your idea to execs looking to invest and you have to convince them you know what you are doing and what your idea is. Very little information.

What looked very concerning: NO MORE "DECK OF CARDS" GAMES! I don't want to see a Jack of Spades on my game, too many people do this. I don't know if it is because people have card decks laying around and mess with them in playtesting vs. actually going to the trouble of creating something or if its more like "hey, if you don't like the game at least you'll have a cool deck of cards" but it must be stopped! pant... pant... okay, I'm better.

No idea how the game plays or what it's like. No idea.

What looked interesting: The story and theme and the prospect of many unique encounters.

A lot of info, good support, and I can tell this is a project of love from the creators.

It's very popular and has many stretch goals now.

What looked "meh": A few minor grips that go with almost every KS, the video needed help. The game name, SMERSH, really? And trying to understand what the two game modes are and other minor gameplay questions. When in doubt, don't mention something that will confuse us, just leave it out.

1-4 players, and I'm not sure I believe the 90 mins.

The $1,500 pledge. Okay, I'm going to to use this project again as an example of a disturbing trend that I feel I need to take a stand against. [soapbox] Stop making pledge goals where the person can affect the actual theme/gameplay of the game! Put your name here, pick which characters have which weapons, PLACE YOUR FACE ON THE BOX? We know you want to reward us, your loyal donors (or in my case, a non-donor) but allowing one of us to influnce game art, play, or theme is not something the rest of us want to see. [/soapbox]

What looked very concerning: Nothing really, this is probably a project I am going to regret not backing later. Time will tell.

GAME: Nobody wants to be a CHUMP!

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1786028604/the-chump-gam...

What looked interesting: It was like getting an email from a Nigerian Prince.

What looked "meh": http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/737032/new-the-chump-game Posted from a user with 1 post, way to be a part of the community.

What looked very concerning: It's basically a game about how people in Florida scam money by promising to extract sunken treasure. And if you pledge at a certain level they will "INCLUDE A GENUINE 17TH CENTURY CERTIFIED SILVER "PIECE OF EIGHT" RECOVERED BY US AT OUR HISTORIC SHIPWRECK SITE!" thus labling you a chump supporter... Does anyone else see the irony in this?

Oh, and there is no game "yet."

Wrong listing I know, what I am actually referring to is this project:

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1741730267/the-planet-ki...

And this thread:

http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/759627/best-game-ever-invent...

What looked interesting: I laughed and laughed.

Okay, so I don't think they are trying to scam anyone or intentionally push out a crappy product, I believe they actually think they have struck gold with their idea and are looking to get rich and famous with something their friends undoubtedly have said "dude, that looks awesome."

What looked "meh": They have no clue. No clue.

http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/759659/new-3d-wargame-by-spa... Let's see if the wargamers are more into it... no? Onto the My Little Pony Forum!

There is a lot of effort that went toward... something. The design is elaborate and there are a lot of bits. Something is obviously missing however in the production values. Talent perhaps? Hire an artist, or ask a professional "does this look okay?"

Don't bump the table.

What looked very concerning: The video and that... guy... in a green suit. That guy will haunt my dreams.

Okay, I can't necessarily say there is no game here or that I don't know how it would play. Rather, I'd say that the designers seem to not care how the game is played or what the actual "game" entails. What do I buy? How do I play?

I don't think they are trying to scam anyone or intentionally push out a crappy product, I believe they actually think they have struck gold with their idea and are looking to get rich and famous with something their friends undoubtedly have said "dude, that looks awesome."

The price and what am I getting and when and.. oh nevermind.

Who am I going to play this with?

This actually looks kind of boring, I like air hockey. I like fooseball. I should like this, right?

What looked very concerning: I have a lego soccer game that is cheaper, plays like it would be more fun and would work better than this game. A. Lego. Soccer. Game.

It's pricey and would sit somewhere taking up space.

What looked interesting: Everything! Why oh why didn't I back this? Someone hit me.

We liked Quarriors, we wanted another dice building engine type game, we like co-op. We would have liked this Aaron, you're an idiot.

What looked "meh":
I don't know, I guess I am a little skittish toward games with < 5 players. But we still play some.

I wasn't sure about the co-op, I mean we like all the co-op games we have and one of our group's problems is in games that get too competitive. I'm sorry, why did I think this would be a problem.

What looked very concerning:
And now its about $150 to get a copy, good job.

What turned me off of it: The "theme". The memes are just terrible to me. It's hard to put into words for me, but it just looks stupid. I don't mind themes on my abstracts, but to me this is the equivelent of putting a My Little Pony theme on a hard-core wargame.

What looked interesting: Shadows Over Camelot, Battlestar Galactica, Bang, Werewolf, Citadels, The Thing Card game. All of these are games with a hidden role/co-op traitor mechanic that we love. Finding another one fits our group perfectly.

Good information, good activity on the forum, helpful designer, good video, name, concept, theme. And doughnut bits

1-6 players=awesome

What looked "meh": I don't know, I made up my mind and this is going to be one I regret I can tell. I didn't fund it so here is my hope: that the project gets funded, that it finds its way into one of our FLGS and maybe it will be like seeing an ex girlfriend. We'll get to know each other again, there won't be any hard feelings, and we can be friends.

Even though everything I've read is very detailed and the designers and playtesters have answered all questions, I still can't see the tension in the traitor role and that made me nervous. Some minor grips on the dice mechanic and what you actually "do" during gameplay.

The Madmen deck looks intruiging but the rest of the levels, just more and more copies of the game.

What looked very concerning: It probably won't get funded.

By the way, this is a very good idea. Although I will say, spread the love around a little more. You don't always have to use Vasel and his views on things can be somewhat partilar. See if you can get Drakkenstrike, Undeadviking, or even UvulaBob to come out of retirement game. If it were me and my project, I'd see if I couldn't get a Board Games with Scott review. That guy is awesome, go Caylus commando!

The buzz.

Shooting stuff in space.

It was funded in about 30 seconds.

What looked "meh": Originally I thought "this looks too complex" to the point that I didn't think I could teach it to my group. Then I learned that it was, in fact simple... too simple! I feel a bit like Goldie Lox, I want a game that is just right.

They're still hashing out how the game will look and what componets they will use but I wasn't 100% sold on the layout, design or artwork.

What looked very concerning: 2 player games. I have Hive for my wife, Space Hulk to play with a friend and Jab because I like boxing my friends without a lawsuit. You have to really blow me away to sell me on another 2 player game. And this didn't blow me away. (4 player w/teams is just as bad, I hate tennis).

What looked interesting: Pickup and deliver -- I like the genre but it's a hole in my collection right now, and the mix of two modes of transportation offered a twist I hadn't seen before.

What looked "meh": Artwork, when it was shown at all, was hit or miss. Most of the components were preproduction. In a steampunk setting, it's hard to know what you're going to get without final art.

What looked very concerning: The complete lack of incentive to be a backer. My FLGS offers 20% off games over $20, so even if you are going to price-fixlimit the distribution channels, I can still get it cheaper than backing the project unless I can find at least 2 other people in the local area who want it.

Absolutely love the art work, looks like an acceptable light worker placement game...but the pledge level to actually get the game is $45. That's what knocked this one out for me. I get that the artwork was probably expensive. I think I'd have gone for it if it had been anywhere around $30-35 to get the game, but $45 is close to what I paid for Dungeon Petz, which has a ton of stuff in the box, all of it dripping with artwork.

Also, I think the cardboard bits for the gold and fruit would be better replaced with gold and red glass beads (the kind you get in craft stores). Much more visually appealing. If I did get it, I think I'd get some to replace the cardboard bits.

I would actually consider getting this game if it gets made, gets good reviews, and is cheaper than $45. Just not now, not at that price, not on Kickstarter.

This is the most ridiculous KS project I have seen to date.

I find it hard to see any redeeming features at all. Even the Gold Coin expansion was laughable. There's no effort, the mechanics are boring and terrible, the art is non-existent. I'm not really sure why someone would pay money for this when they could do the same OR BETTER with a napkin, a pencil and a penny in their pocket.

Most interesting: Someone actually pledged. shake

a too-clever project page that's something out of an Abbot and Costello sketch.

I was surprised not to see: Lunch Box Board Game on this list yet! Its funding has failed, but you should go just to see the horror.

What looked interesting: A serious attempt at an educational game -- apparently.

What looked meh: Everything. For all of its good intentions, this poor game looks like a preachy mashup of Monopoly, Trivial Pursuit, and everything on a generic 80's lunchbox. Most 10 year olds that I know would be personally insulted if anyone tried to get them to play this game.

Key danger signs:

* A horribly unrealistic Kickstarter plan (with a goal of $130,000 -- only $129,289 to go!)
* Un-fun theme, un-fun art.
* "Patent pending"
* A scanned letter from one teacher, making it "educator recommended"
* Some fun discussion on a previous geeklist about the nature of the kickstarter campaign.

What looked "meh": The flavor text on the cards. Seriously, you have to read these. Avoid a battle, but lose a turn. Flavor text: "Play this card at any time to avoid a battle. Due to going underground, you lose a turn." Anyone?

There is decent and functional art, 100 different cards, and for $17 but...

What looked very concerning: "There Must Be No Competition, Before World Domination"

There must be no information before kickstarter video! And none in the video.

Is there a game besides the luck of the cards and the luck of the dice roll? Or is this
Munchkin - Steve Jackson + dice with player elimination?

Oh, and it appears they already didn't succeed in funding once:

What looked interesting: Ha! All kidding aside, if you are going to make a commercial style video, this is the way to do it. From the uppidy-hipster to the bass playing in the background (but maybe you didn't want to do this in your appartment?) it's perfect and fits the theme and even though most likely amateurs, the people in the video all do a good job.

It's funded.

I want a coffee can on my game shelf!

A good sense of what the game is, what we get and who and what your company is and what it can do.

What looked "meh": The funding levels. $55 gets me the game, right? So the levels below that...?

The artwork is great but we are lead to believe if you get the funding it will change... can you keep the components as is, because they look awesome?

What looked very concerning: Just the one premise, making the game to solve the "problem" of co-op games. There are already a few games where all players psuedo-work-together with one winner and I dislike almost all of them I have played. But I don't know, I'm still on then fence and might have to retract this one. I still have 5 days to pledge, right?

What looked interesting: I know this one is long over but I didn't fund it and should have and I wanted to make sure I didn't forget it in case it ever becomes widely available.

The premise, theme and art alone almost made me fund it.

Good range of players, the gameplay is a game I would like to play.

What looked "meh": Our group is not a conflict orientated group, we don't like super-screw-you games. Ones that we tolerate however are games like this that make it less emotional by making it a joke or with a ridiculous theme making it fun, etc.

What looked very concerning: Not much. The one thing I will say is with powerful random cards in a game, I almost want to see a lot of other people play it and give their honest opinions first. So an idea for future kickstarters get a couple of reviewers in before starting.

At the time there were a lot of projects I liked and I believe I went with Manhattan Project instead. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/miniongames/the-manhatta...

What looked interesting: It's a cute little game with an awesome theme. Despite my lack of support I hope it gets funded.

The artwork.

I seriously need to bug some of you sometime to teach me flash. Looks great.

What looked "meh": Had a bit too much of a "pokemon with necromancers" feel to the game play. I like the spirit concept but outside that I didn't get a feel that the game had much depth (and it might, I could be wrong) but I think it has the potential to have that depth and be a much better game.

For the love! Kickstarters, find someone interesting to do the voice/acting in your videos!

The phrase "Super Grand Master" and the way you win. Victory points in a fighting game?? There has to be a better way.

What looked very concerning: I made a vow to my Kung Fu Master, that I would forever forsake the purchasing of new 2 player games, unless they looked really cool.

The prototype looked great. The artwork is a thing of beauty. But I had a hard time grasping the actual mechanics of the game from the relatively obscure description. The designer also had reservations about making the rules of the game available, and had a bit of a strong discussion with people that were questioning that.
I abstained from supporting this effort. Looks are important, but gameplay is more. Without clearly understanding the kind of game I would get into, I would not risk my money on it. The stance of the designer could have been misconstrued as overdefensive when facing criticism, which took away my trust on her ability to come through with the game. I heard that it is going well though, and hope it gets published and sells well.

What looked interesting:
I liked the simple basic mechanic of combining two cards to make an attack.

Simultaneous action, quick to play.

Plenty of character variety, to add depth and replayability.

Print and play intro set, so it was easy to try out.

What looked "meh":
I'm not sold on the "fighting game" theme, in general. And prefer science fiction to fantasy.

Only 2 players. (I didn't know about the other options. I guess I wasn't paying attention?)

What looked concerning:
Not much, really. I think I was worried about investing too much in Kickstarter, since I had a few pledged projects pending at the time.

Fortunately, the designer came to Genghis Con and I was able to rectify my earlier error: I now own this game .

I love the art and the title, and I like negotiation games like Kremlin. I would have liked to see more integration with the chickens living on a farm and setting up a Roman-style republic though. Instead it seems pasted on--for some reason there's the island of Sicily in the game. How are chickens supposed to exil there? Fly from Rhode Island? And then the player pieces don't seem integrated with the player cards. What does it matter if my chicken is named Gallus III when ultimately it's just blue III? Finally the price is about $5-$10 more than I will pay for a game sight unseen.

Feminist Playing Cards

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/lynncasper/feminist-play...

What looked interesting: I had to post this.

I don't see Courney Love on there.

What looked "meh": No sample artwork of the cards. For that matter, why illustrate the cards at all? The people mentioned all actually existed and it should be easier/cheaper to get pictures of them.

If you are going for a "movement" like this, at least come on your own video and explain why we should care.

There doesn't seem to be any rhyme nor reason to the criteria used to pick these artists. Karen Carpenter and Signe Toly Anderson don't make the list for example and some of the other picks seem mind boggling. Were these just woman you happened to Google?

It. Is. A. Deck. Of. Cards.

What looked very concerning: Yoko Ono is on there.

$20 for a deck of cards, you have to be freaking kidding me!

It's about 40 years too late for a feminist deck of cards (even the Rock and Roll hall of fame has a special wing dedicated to woman, so again, what exactly is your cause?)

Zombies Fried

Not listed on BGG

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/396776259/zombie-fried-t...

What looks interesting: Sigh.

What looks "meh": "It's a game about Zombies!" What, another game about zombies? "No, in this one you fight and kill zombies!" Yeah... so? The same as every other zombie game. "No, this one is funny!" /leave

No BGG entry.

Here is an example of how putting what game components a supporter actually gets would be helpful.

Game = $15. Game + 1 card = $25...

I like the idea of approaching the "ad" from the zombie side, where the humans are the ones who are the antagonists bent on bloodshed. Now why oh why couldn't there be a game that takes the zombie's side?

What looks very concerning: Your game is munchkin with zombies... AND THERE ALREADY IS A ZOMBIE MUNCHKIN GAME!

The video is un-watchable, and mostly uninteligible. I don't want college humor, I don't want the "aw shucks, it's bad but we know it's bad" joke, I want you to tell me why I should reach in my wallet early and help you create a game which may or may not, in my mind, deserve to be created. Convince me.

The Zombie Pup card you displayed implies the following. This is a card-luck game and a dice-luck game. AND even if you win, there is a small chance bad stuff still happens. That doesn't sound awesome.
