Galileo!

Galileo!
Gali-

Oh, hi there! I was just rocking out to some Queen. But, seriously, if you're like me, you make a marginal income with a few extra spending dollars every few months for a board game. Or, more realistically, you make a decent income that's eaten away by this magical entity called "life." Or maybe it's a tight month.

So the purpose of this list is your one-stop place for cheap gaming. Don't worry, I won't list awful games. These are titles that you can buy without shredding, deleting, and burning all inklings of the receipt and pricetag from your starving loved ones.

You can list titles here, too, if you know a dark gaming price secret!

To keep this list from becoming too relative, this is all I ask:

meeple Titles stay around $20 or less (a little over is fine).

meeple It has a rating that's not deplorable (rating of 6 or higher, please).

meeple Tell us why it's a great value game!

You can buy like a thousand commons for less than 10$, and that'd more than enough to play for years without having two same games, as long as you stay away from competitive environments.

In terms of components, you don't get much for 19,95$ (a deck of cards, a bunch of paper maps and some pencils), but it's an incredibly fun hidden movement + hidden roles game.

Excellent 2-player game available for $19 in my area. The players are two traders dealing in, in increasing order of value, hides, silk, spices, silver, gold, and jewels.

Bit of a press-your-luck element as you get more points for trading in larger sets but by waiting until you get larger sets, your opponent may swoop in and trade in a set of that item first, getting more points as early trades in each good are worth more than later ones.

You also have camel cards in your hand, which are not worth anything by themselves, but are necessary to acquire/transport the trade goods so you always have to balance your "herd" with getting your trade goods.

Don't hate me for the theme...I'm a cat lover, and so were all the people I played this game with. We all had fun and absolutely no kittens were harmed. The player rating comes in just above your cutoff of 6, and I got a copy for $9.

Each player is responsible for protecting a different colour of kitten cards. Players may play kitten cards from their hand, which may be their own kittens or other players' kittens, into the box, the blender, or the neutral space in between. There are also action cards to be able to move the kittens around, either shifting yours to safety or the other players' into the blender. And then someone plays a dreaded blend card. At the end of the game, kittens who were safe in the box are worth +2 points, blended kittens -1.

What made this more fun than "this pile of cards are worth +2 each and this pile are worth -1 each" is that all the kittens are cute and cartoony, have cutesy names, and all the players started to get protective about certain kittens. You can never save all your kittens, so you latch onto certain ones. In one game, having only one kitten in my opening hand, I put one of my son-in-law's kittens in the blender and played blend immediately. It was named Paco. For the rest of the game, whenever he gleefully played blend when some of my kittens were in the blender, he would shout, "FOR PACO!"

I am surprised to be the first to add this one. It's one of my favorite games, and I'd venture to say the best auction game of all time.

This game is different every time you play, due to the paintings you are dealt, your seating position, and who you play with. Managing the double and fixed price auctions is always tricky, especially with new players at the table and their tolerance for risk-taking.

This one never gets old, and thanks to cheap-ass Mayfair, it's really affordable. If you are into art, you can also design your own set at artscow.com.

$15 for all the print-and-play files. You'll spend a little additional printing out the decks, but not a whole lot more. I printed them all on a single cartridge, and it isn't used up yet. And card stock cards (yes, normal card stock such as you can find anywhere, say, Walmart) are surprisingly durable. We've played 39 times so far with unsleeved card stock cards, and they look as good as the day we started: no bent cards, not foxed corners, no paper wear. The best value of almost any game I've bought, even if I'd bought the preprinted product (for $100!).

Watch the DriveThruReview on this and it looks awesome. Like Biblios on steriods. I guess I should probably have played the game before adding it to a GeekList. But the review was so good it feels as if I already know the game. thumbsup

It's about 1/2 the cost of Biblios, it seems, too, at only $15 from Boards & Bits.

Coolstuff Inc., Boards and Bits, and Thoughthammer all have it for between $16 and $18.

It's a great game solo, that I've played MANY times, but it also works co-op up to 6 players. The game has a great theme and abstracts it quite well. It also can be a great brainburner as you puzzle through possible moves. This is a great game at a great price with beautiful and thematic art.

Some PnP games might seem cheap at first, but by the time you actually print it out, the cost of materials can really add up, and if you're like me the end result is not exactly stellar looking.

Enter micropul. It prints out on one full page label, use old cardboard (or something sturdier (or something sturdier for a nicer set) to back and you can slap a set together for next to nothing. No cards or big boards or fancy cutouts means all you have to do to is be able to cut along a straight line to have a decent looking set.

It also happens to be a great little brain burner. One set let's you play 1 (high score style) or 2-/3-player vs. games. A second set lets you play 4.

Packs up tiny, and I carry it around almost everywhere.

Bought this gem for $14 late last year and my family is still playing this on a regular basis. Easy to learn and play, the kids dig it out when their friends come over and it is always a hit with lots of laughs and giggles. We played it with their grandparents last month and we all lost it when Granny (very seriously) played the "Just a Fart" card to dodge taking poo damage.

We could add most of the Kosmos 2 player series to this list (and some are already on it) but Lost Cities is a must! Perhaps the most popular game of the line and still available for under $16. Ok, perhaps you could argue it's still an overpriced game with over sized cards and a very pretty but ultimately unnecessary board. But I've played this more and enjoyed it more than games that cost twice as much. So on the list it goes!
