Nothing provides a better backdrop for gaming than some good tunes. I find that becoming the game night DJ is an important duty, and laying down the right groove can heighten the atmosphere to any game.

I listen to a lot of prog rock, and the good thing about prog rock is that it often times is conceptual and instrumental. With winding passages and intelligently crafted compositions, prog rock music often play like movies for the ears. From 1968-1978 the entire world went through a musical renaissance, and cultures from all around the world began mixing jazz, classical, psychedelic, and world styles. This music isn't for everyone, often having complex time signatures and key changes. By playing it in the background though, it doesn't demand as much listener participation and provides a wonderful backdrop to match the evenings gaming fair.

What music do you like to put on for some of YOUR favorite games?

(Prog challenge: Listen to at least ONE of these songs all the way through. I hope I can enlighten at least one or two people with some of the grooviest jams of yore. Also, I am always happy to talk about progressive rock so if anyone wants to geekmail me with recommendations or inquiries don't hesitate!)

P.S. Due to my obsessive compulsive tendencies, I Must iterate that this list could and should be much longer, but this was a late night off-the-top-of-my-head kind of list to try and drum up a bit of interest about progressive rock. It goes great with games I promise 'ya!

P.S.S. Most of this list is Martin Wallace games. I find his games to be extremely thematic so they match the geeklist well. He's my favorite designer, so that's why lol.

Krautrock (progressive electronic music from Germany) is a perfect match for most train games for me. The constant chugging and thumping of the bass guitar as well as the mesmerizing drum beats correlate well with the train theme. Neu or Kraftwerk are wonderful for these types of games.

I absolutely love getting the chance to break out some Italian Progressive music, and Princes or La Citta give me those outlets. Since this is my favorite genre, I have to include two suggestions for this, although this list would never end:

There's no shortage of space music out there, but I think that Yugoslavian band Tako is a perfect match for Galaxy Trucker!

When playing London or Brass I really like to make sure that the soundtrack is filled with English whimsy. Caravan is always perfect for the occasion.

(Enjoy the pottery, the other one wouldn't allow embedding lol)

With a game like Factory Fun, Automobile, or Power Grid: Factory Manager players are put into the a mechanical atmosphere. The jerky, mathematic stylings of Egg suit these styles of games really well.

Why not play a game about the French Revolution accompanied by French jazz-rockers Moving Gelatine Plates?

When I play JASEs I find that the best place to look for a soundtrack is in the prog folk category. There are many bands great for this but this band in particular is too cool to not include on this list.

I don't like country music at all, and finding a suitable match for a Western themed game can be tough. I think a suitable artist for Western themed games is early Captain Beefheart, especially the album Safe as Milk. Go to far into his discography and you will not find good western music anymore lol.

When playing games with a South American theme, and especially ones that take place in jungles, I love to put on some Lula Cortes. Bacamarte works really well also.

Actually, I played this as a prelude to a Spanish invasion in
Empires in Arms, but it's far more suitable to WiF.
