Having young children, I'd like to introduce them to games that will engage them and hopefully encourage them to continue gaming with me as they grow.

I've perused many of the excellent Geeklists regarding childrens' games and have appreciated the contributions of many excellent contributors, most notably pmboos and smithhemb.

I think I've been able to select a few games from these Geeklists and other recommendations (things like Gulo Gulo, Chicken Cha Cha Cha, Geistertreppe/Flaschengeist), but one thing that has kind of bothered me has been the big mass of HABA games that I know nothing about. Their high quality components and wonderful illustrations are very attractive to the collector in me.

So I'm wondering, should I try to suppress the urge to buy a bunch of HABA games? If so, which games are best? Most of them seem to share similar mechanics (either roll and move, memory or cooperation) - which ones stand out? Some have garnered more praise and have received a little more buzz than others (like Akaba, Kayanak, Klondike...), but are there any titles that are less well known that you would recommend? Are there any you've tried that have fallen flat with your kids?

Please make any comments, recommendations or criticism to the games only considering your kids' enjoyment of the game, not an adult perspective (unless it's so annoying you have refused to play it). And please feel free to add your own HABA games to the list. I've just taken some of the ones that seem to be the most readily available (i.e. in stock at Time Well Spent). I'm hoping that with your help, this can be a resource for those of us wanting to start playing HABA games.

The "Twilight Imperium" of HABA. Four different games that you can play individually or link together. Some gambling, some matching, some dexterity, some 3-D. Not much depth but great atmosphere.

My favorite Haba game. Fun for kids and adults. You can adjust the size and shape of the gaming area with the block and string fence in the box. It does have the push your luck aspect every turn. (Which an adult can use as an equalizer with small children, I often push much harder than I should and my nieces laugh when I lose all my points for that turn!)
The shooting is easy enough to learn and using the block as a shot deflector really makes this game shine.

My five year old son and his seven year old cousin both really like this one. The adults like it too. You roll dice with colors on them, then match the colors you rolled with the colored spaces on the board to move your race car forward. It requires some planning ahead and quite a bit of luck. There are a couple of choke points where players who are behind can catch up while the leaders try to roll the right colors. And it doesn't take too long.

"Highly Suspect" is for slightly older kids (5+?), but it a bit of fun for adults too.

The board is a 3D maze, and each player has a detective in their colour.

The burglar starts in the middle of the maze.

Each turn, a player rolls the die which tells them how many times (1-3) they can "tip" the board - like in the picture - which will slide all the detectives and the burglar down to their nearest "wall".

The idea is to have your detective end up next to the burglar ... then you get to catch him and you get a card which shows which burglar it was (worth a number of points).

Then he goes back in the middle and the game continues.

To add a little strategy for older kids, you can play with the cards face up, so when it's a low-scoring burglar, you can steer it towards someone else's detective.

Quite difficult, you flick the balls representing stones around the river aiming to get them into a pyramid. All the while you must avoid crocodile mouths. Can be a little long but small fingers help. My 5 year old likes this one.

I like this one a lot. It's a matching game where you dump a large pile of sturdy cardboard socks on the table and everyone is reaching in with one hand at the same time trying to find 5 identical pairs of socks. And it can be tricky sometimes, always a good laugh though. When you think you have 5 pairs, you want to be the first to grab the sock monster. If you were correct, you are awarded a tiny working clothespin, and the first person to get 3 pins wins. It's simple, but good for matching skills with out a memory aspect.

entertaining dexterity game, with some risk management. basically you are pushing a motorboat around a course with your finger, but the boat ends up going in every other direction than you intended as you go faster, so theirs lots of giggles and the timing device for turns is pretty neat; your opponent winds a rope around and when your at the end that players turn is over (helps adjust for playing with younger ones as you can slow it down). i have only ever played and therefor would only recommend haba's dexterity games. great for hand eye coordination and motor skill development. their other types of games seem to have great components but little in the way of actual gaming (case in point #27 on this list: kayanak).
i searched for this one after reading a review at bruno faidutti's website. i like his kids section as he rates them not only on the merits as a kids' game but also on how enjoyable they are for adults as well. and really bruno is just a big kid anyway.

Just got this one, which I haven't really heard too much about until I became interested in games designed by Roberto Fraga (who also made the Haba game Dancing Eggs). This seems to be a motorized game in which players use party whistle things to grab the spinning items. I'll post more once I've played it, but a really original idea. It looks like a lot of fun.

Another Roberto Fraga title. This one is clearly a children's version of his other speed/recognition games like Cosmic Attack and Squad Seven in which you must accomplish various tasks as quickly as possible. However, it's still playable by adults, though maybe a little easy. Not being able to see the sand timer adds an extra pressure that can be pretty fun.
