I'm part of many different game groups. This is one of the groups I'm part of from my perspective. It was mostly a GW mini's game group at least from what I did with this group. Due to moving the family that hosted this group and rallied the troops is moving. I'm sure we'll try to reconnect occasionally but the reality is we're all moving on. Here's a short history from my perspective and put in a way that I can say publicly.

I had members of my middle school Bible study play this game including one of my high school helpers. He said, "This is pretty cool but I should show you my 40K minis." I had heard of 40K from Sam Healey from the Dice Tower Podcast and was interested in looking into it.

Side note. I've played this game a number of times with my nephew and he loves it. I didn't play this much with members of the group I'm talking about. We (I) quickly got into 40K.

My Bible study assistant showed me some of his Guard and probably Black Templar. It looked interesting. I can't remember if I picked up the book and some Tau off Ebay before I learned the game from them? I want to say I checked it out and tried to teach myself before officially learning. I'm going to guess I played my first game as Tau with either IG or Black Templar (or both?) against Chaos (the more mechanical / long distance shooting one) and Orks. I can't remember all of the order of events but two of the students from the Bible study also got into 40K. One of the older members started with Orks. I introduced one of the younger members to Tau. It wasn't really his style but that is what he played until the new Dark Eldar codex came out.

This doesn't directly relate to this group but I should note that Monpoc happened around the same time and was a big thing for me and about 5 students from church for about 3 years. 3 of the regulars from the Monpoc group became regular 40K players. I worked on a Space Wolves and later Grey Knights army with one of the players.

Monpoc is a side story for purposes of this geeklist. However, it should be noted that games like Monpoc made the transition to 40K easier.

I think the group in question only played this game once ... but we still talk about that experience because one guy acted like a traitor ... but wasn't. He poked the traitor in the side the entire game because he knew that guy was the traitor because he was "too quiet." This is the most reserved member of the group so I'm not sure how he picked up on that ... it was a good friend of his so he might have known the difference.

Ok, they've said "Denny has strange games ... but they're good." I enjoyed a game session or two of Dominion. We played a number of different suggested ones from the base set. I learned the game much better from that long session.

This was a big change and I'll admit I never fully learned the new rules and it was my downfall. I tried to play Space Wolves more and never really got how to play them well. I would sometimes play as Tau with Space Wolves on my team. I should have read the rules more or requested more smaller games to help me learn. I kept being invited to 4 player massive games that only confused me more to be honest.

I liked the idea of this. It destroyed my desire to play 40K until just recently. The Dark Eldar player has been doing what I needed ... and slowly reteaching me the game one step at a time. It's what I needed from the begining. I never want to play Apocalypse again.

I got this used from a BGGer's sale. This group really liked this game and so did my Monpoc group. We'd sometimes play this after the Monpoc tourney's. We played a lot for a while and then pretty much shelved it. It might now be our game of choice but that is fast forwarding to ... today to be honest.

One of the IG players got a number of them to try Fantasy though they tried to resist the pull. I had to admit that the Lizardmen and Bretonians looked good to me. After the absolute disasters of 40K appocalypse I helped in getting people into Fantasy more. I really wish I would have taken more time to learn it. I like this game better than 40K. I really wish a non-magic or low magic game was more possible with this system but it seems that magic is quite essential. I never fully grasped Lizardmen though I had my favorite game in any minis game ever against Warriors of Chaos when I could have / should have won. It is the closest he ever came to losing and he admits he should have lost but my dice betrayed me. I technically lost combat and failed my rerolled leadership save and ran from a situation where I clearly had the upper hand. I can see myself playing this from time to time.

I wanted to like this expansion and I never really gave it a chance. In some ways it did exactly what I didn't want ... it expanded magic and made no magic even less viable. Many in the group enjoyed this but as a team game it was even more complicated than I wanted.

I did eventually get the Dark Eldar player to try Fantasy. He painted my Mantic undead and made a Tomb Kings army. I don't sense that he's hooked.

I tried to see if they'd play this. The Dark Eldar player has tried it a couple of times and the Grey Knights player once. I'm hoping they'll still try again but I doubt they will. Pretty much none of them would even consider the rules. Simpler was overly simple in their book and they didn't want to confuse rules. I think the second edition helps and I can't wait for the new edition personally. However, if I can't find players it won't last. I do think I have a few people who will play outside of this group so I can't wait to try it with them. This particular group from this list won't play this game however some do like the Mantic minis. The High Elf player couldn't pass up the sale price from last Christmas.

Now that our hosts are getting ready to move this seems to be our new game of choice. Minis are being taken out of the basement and returned to their owners. Other minis are being packed for shipping. This is now the most realistic game for us to play. They've invented rules for 3 player games and team games. They really want to play a 3 vs 3 player game. We were going to do one of each race but I think we'll not use Dark Elf and instead use two Ork decks and have one be Ork / Skaven. I need to practice to get ready for that but I think that would be a ton of fun.

This may be what we play as this school year finishes and what we will likely play if we regather at some point. It transports more easily and offers choices in buidling the decks and in game play. The theme is familiar and we love it frankly.
