We had beautiful weather here in sunny upstate New York, and while I have Hive and Flash Duel: Second Edition coming my way, I spent a pleasant Saturday afternoon in the park with my girlfriend playing good old Backgammon.

On Sunday, I played my second game of Dominant Species. I experimented with strategies for the mammals, and learned that they are particularly well-suited to scoring with the Survival card, since their rodent-like persistence precludes a single species' need for food. The arachnid player caught on to what I was doing, though, and swarmed all over the tundra, competing several times a turn in the last two turns and eking out a narrow victory over myself and the reptiles. This is a brilliant game, and I can't wait to play more.

Saturday:

Eastern Pennsylvania Gaming Society meeting.

Started off with a 3 player game of The Speicherstadt with Kaispeicher expansion. I got 4 of the 5 cards that converts basic goods to 2 VPs and pulled out a victory. I think I only completed 1 contract and it was a "rare goods" contract. I stayed in the middle of the pack on firemen, got the bank and had a couple of straight up VP cards.

We played another game of The Speicherstadt with Kaispeicher later in the day, this time 4 players. I tried the same strategy, but couldn't keep up with firemen this time. I tied for second place in this one.

Between those two games, we played a game of Luna. I was doing well with the moon priestess points, but came in second place in the end. I should've switched my focus to the temple in the last two rounds.

The last game of the day was Prêt-à-Porter. Wow! What a surprisingly good game! A fairly involved economic (most money wins) euro. Dominant Species-like Action Pawn worker placement. Lots of paths to victory. Regarding the thematic economic euros, I liked this one more than Martin Wallace's Automobile. I pulled out a win in the end with a massive show. I learned something that day: Real men play boardgames about the fashion industry.

Sunday:

My son and I played HeroQuest. What a blast we had! After that we watched Fellowship of the Ring on DVD. His first time seeing those movies. He liked it so much we started Two Towers right afterwards. We'll have the trilogy finished this week for sure. Fun Fantasy filled Sunday!

Was invited to do some spring skiing over the weekend with my brother-in-law this weekend, so not a lot of gaming, but I did bring him this game as a gift, which we played a few times and had a lot of fun with as we had a few beers after skiing. Great, great game.

It was a good gaming weekend for me too.

My GF treated herself to Lost Cities (because she had endured the dentist after a broken crown )
Friday I thought it was her game because I lost both games we played. However on Saturday I had my revenge and won the one game we played.
But on Sunday we found out that we don't have any strategy yet. One of the games I lost -21 against 163 gulp. Well, can you do anything against starting with four Investment cards (among them three blue ones) and get another in the second round?

Sunday was our only game of London.

But we stay addicted to Pandemic: 7 games.

Friday we played we started with our normal 2-players-2-roles-each-5-epidemics game, then decided to try only two roles (5 epidemics): won one, lost one.
On Saturday we played and won our first 6 Epidemics game with Medic and Operations Expert
Sunday was a good day: we won 2 out of 3 games with 6 epidemics, even one with the notorious Operations Expert - Researcher combination.

Played my first game of Nordic Countries on Saturday with my Girlfriend. The first route she took managed to block me, so it was immediately apparent this was going to be a different experience from regular TTR. Both of us were focused on getting accustomed to the new map, so we were never intentionally trying to block each other, but there was still a lot of tension in the game.

I really like that you can use 3 cards of any color as a random for Ferries, it makes the game pace so much better. I think all but 1 time I tried to take a tunnel, I drew 2 of my color... So that was fun.

I ended up winning the game, only because she wasn't able to draw a blue card at the end to finish her last ticket.

I definitely prefer this over regular TTR with 2 and 3 players, and I like not having to shuffle the train cards so much.

On Saturday we had a large family party as my mother turned 70 on that day. In the end of the party, when most of the guests left, she demanded a little play so we played Ticket to Ride Map Collection: Volume 1 – Team Asia & Legendary Asia (the Legendary Asia map) two times 4- and 3-player. I won the first, she won the second one. She is just too good in Ticket to Ride.

On Sunday when my son woke up he had fever and I found the only solution to keep him sitting for long (instead of running all the day in the flat - you can't even dream of putting him into bed) - I played Orchard with him 4 times, for one and a half hour. Well, I didn't enjoy the game as much as he did but at least he was sitting calm while we were picking the fruits from the trees again and again.

In the afternoon I could see my wife is too tired to play. So I didn't force her, even though I really wanted to try YINSH. So I played it against myself and liked it. It doesn't mean anything of course - I know I liked DVONN when I played it against myself but it wasn't nearly as much fun as it is when played against my wife. So I still need to try it against an opponent other than myself...

I did not play this game this weekend, but it was still the game of the weekend for me. Went to TABScon on Saturday and was able to buy a second-hand copy of Letters From Whitechapel, which topped my wishlist.

Aside from that coup, played three games with three friends while I was there...

First game was my introduction to Fresco, which I enjoyed quite a bit. Essentially Pastiche, which I already enjoy, combined with worker placement, a mechanic I frequently gravitate towards.

Next up was a lighter game of...

...which caught the eye of the people at the next table, who borrowed it from one of my friends when we were done so they could try it.

Finally we went on to a heavier game of...

Since my husband doesn't even want to learn Dungeon Petz, it was nice to be able to play it again.

Also picked up...

...from friends who were getting rid of this one.

So, attending my first game event was a big success...played three games, added one to my wishlist (Fresco, I already own the other two), and came home with two games, one of which was my current holy grail game.

(I was hoping to play Letters From Whitechapel on Sunday, but a three-hour nap got in the way. zzzzzzzzz)

Really slow weekend for me. Only had a single person who wanted to game this weekend, so brought out a lot of my 2p games I never really played a whole lot before.

Started with Biblios, which I had only previously played with my wife. I enjoyed it much more than I remembered, and I'll probably up my ranking for this one. Fun game.

Moved on to Haggis, which is also always amusing, quick and fun.

Finally, played a round of Flash Duel: Second Edition and had a good fight with two very well matched characters.

For my mothers birthday we gave her this game and promised to play it with her. Two months later we fulfilled that promise!

We played the India map and we all seemed to end up in the middle of the map. The lower half of India filled up quickly and I managed to create one giant loop in the upper half of the map. I pulled 30 points from loops and completed 7 tickets. If I would have had 2 more turns i would have had a bonus 50 from looping but I managed to win by less than 10 points! (thank you longest train).

My brother and his wife left so my mom and I played Switz. Connecting countries is an interesting idea and towards the end of the game I didn't want any new tickets so I tired to connect the missing 4th country to give myself a small 6 point boost. I failed and my mother won by 8 points (so the 6 points wouldn't have helped me)!

Also I had my first experience as a Wingman for Eagle & Gryphon games and taught Railways of England and Wales, Defenders of the Realm, Incan Gold, and For Sale to some people over the weekend. After teaching everyone I played a game of Shadow Hunters which was quite fun.

The wife agreed to give this one a try with me on Friday night. Needless to say, we lost horribly. There are obvious similarities to Arkham Horror, but WoS plays much more simply and quickly. It defeats the players with a brutal efficiency that we didn't really appreciate until it was much too late. We were actually feeling pretty good about the game until about halfway through, when some of the creatures started "activating." The first one to do so shuffled all of the unsealed portal locations (we hadn't sealed any yet), which effectively negated much of the work we'd done up to that point.

Despite all this, the wife wants to play it again. She likes it much more than Arkham Horror, which we found too fiddly and cumbersome. The choices you have to make in WoS are frequently difficult, but they're always clear. If you don't have a problem with a crushingly difficult game that you will almost always lose, WoS is an excellent "Arkham Light" experience.

Saturday night we played a friend's copy of Power Grid. It was a little dry for my taste, and we ended up not finishing the game. Still, I think it has some potential, and I'll be happy to give another try in the near future.

First, I got to play a couple games of Dominant Sepcies. This was my first time getting this to the table and it was awesome. We played two player with only one animal a piece and it was still pretty brutal. Next time I will play with either more people or more animals. But this was defiantly an awesome game, and theare is a lot more to get out of this for sure.

Next, I got to play some Antiquity. I have been playing this just about every weekend, and i absolutely love it. I am sure this will be played for many more weekends to come.

Finally, we played some quick games of Dominion with all the expansions. I always enjoy Dominion, but my wife beats me most every time.

This weekend ended up going pretty well for gaming, despite a local mini-convention/birthday party scheduled for Saturday that got cancelled at the last minute due to the host getting sick with the flu.
---------------------------------

On Friday a small group from church came over to our house for supper, and afterwards we played two very enjoyable games of Wits & Wagers.

On Saturday, along with my wife and a friend of ours we got in a game of 7 Wonders which included our first try with the Leaders expansion and the Catan board (which I used - B side). I intentionally tried to double-up on a few resources to make sure the 2:1 changer would be available, but ultimately ended up not using it more than once or twice. Hatshepsut and a Trading post helped keep whatever resources I didn't have (or couldn't make) in steady supply, and I ended up winning by a comfortable margin without building a single green card (lots of blue and red points instead).

Our 7-month old daughter was getting hungry by then so my wife wasn't able to join us for a follow-up game, so we pulled out the always-excellent Undermining. At the end it came down to a difference of only two points - and I had been just one action short of being able to claim a leftover contract on my last turn to steal the win. If only I'd gone for that reactor upgrade earlier...

To finish off the afternoon I pulled out The Phantom League to *finally* play it against another person. It was a gift from my BGG Secret Santa ninja and has been sitting up on the shelf staring at me from the shelf with those sad "play me!" eyes for months. It went really well, and everything flowed very smoothly especially once we switched (half a dozen turns in) to the more thematic docking sheets. My opponent picked up a ton of fame points for exploring new systems in his Free Trader (with help from the engine upgrade that let him draw two hyperspace cards), while I spent most of my time hauling stuff around in my massive Cargo Cube and mostly buying my way up the notoriety side. Several times I tried taking on cargo of "questionable legality" for huge scores of cash, but I kept getting pinched by the feds. Finally, after seeing no other good way to catch up, I made an attack run at my opponent's ship. Partly to try to put a stop to his rampant exploration and excessive alien coddling, and partly to try out the combat system for real. It's wonky as hell, but we finally got it figured out and it went well from there - except for the part where I misplayed a card and he managed to escape with a heavily damaged ship rather than in an escape pod like he was supposed to. Very fun game, and I can't wait to get it to the table again soon...

All things considered it was a good weekend for gaming, even though there's always room for more. To top it all off, a shiny new copy of High Frontier and a 48x36 copy of the giant poster map are due to arrive here later this week....

I discovered Hive this weekend and introduced it to my son and daughter on Sunday. My 12-year old son couldn't beat me over the course of about 8 games, but still is eager to play more. Later my 10-year old daughter asked me, "What game is that, Daddy?" After I taught her how to play, she came very close to beating me on her first game.

If the first day is any indication, I think we've found a real family winner here!

Friday:
It's was my daughter's first birthday on St. Patrick's day, so the in-laws were in town. On Friday night we played some Guillotine and a game of Guild of Thieves (my design).

Saturday:
The birthday party and a game of Fairy Tale with my little sister. She loves the game and is always wanting to beat me. Later that night Krista and I continued our Best of 5 Series, this time the game was Dominion and I was victorious in 3 of 4 games.

Sunday:
After a day of NCAA basketball, church, napping, burning brush, a picnic, and geocaching, we still managed to play a game of Tobago with some friends who dropped by unexpectedly to pick something up. I'm really enjoying this one right now, as it is different than many other games.

Played for the first time Saturday against my 17 year old son. Awesome game - even awesomer that I won!

I played the British and truthfully I would have lost (probably handily) if his cards weren't so bad.

Lost a close contest at the Friday game group meeting, falling short on 4th & goal on the 2 yard line with :30 seconds left to play. The 79 Patriots held on to down the 79 Rams by 4 points.

Also managed to get in a couple of games of
for old times sake on Saturday. Considering I had to go into the office Saturday morning, not a bad weekend for gaming.
