April in Paris...
Kaiser is laughing...
His troops are relaxing under the trees.

(OK, I'm reaching here -- a (bad) wargame-based spoof of the old Johnny Mercer song).)

It's that time again: April! What wargames are you playing? Who are you playing with? If it is ongoing, how is the game going? How did you enjoy it? Inquiring minds want to know!

Now to promote some Geeklists:

Looking for an online opponent? Is there a game you really want to play but can't find an opponent? Go to the
VASSAL/Cyberboard/SKYPE request list.

Help the BGG Database of Wargames:
Check out this Geeklist and look through the list of war games that do not have a review. If you are willing and able, pick one out and get it on the table if need be, or write a review for it

Sorry, but this one's been on my table for over a month (repeated plays, not just sitting) and will not be coming off any time soon. It's that good.

Due to other distractions I have this set up but have not started playing it.The first thing I had to do was sort and store the counters, when I got the game all of the counters were punched and just dumped in the box. I wasn't too impressed with the counter art it's bland and has tiny printing.

All set up and taking up an additional 2 tables at this time. A friend and I have been going over the rules and are about ready to start our first game. Why are the rules for games produced by these fine Japanese designers some of the best rules I've seen written?

Actually, a friend and I played this one on March 31st.

In our first game, the Confederates conceded on Turn 6 (of 16 turn game). But that was a learning experience.

We immediately played again, this time to completion, with the Confederates winning 12 VPs to 9 VPs.

- The Federals still held Strasburg (1 VP), Front Royal (1 VP), and Winchester (3 VPs), but the Confederates had inflicted far more punishment in terms of block (unit) elimination. The destruction of most of Shields' division and half of Fremont's was decisive.

- Jackson doubled back to smash elements of Fremont's division that had snuck in behind him to capture Staunton and Harrisonburg, cutting Jackson's LOC as well as adding 4 VPs. Not only did Jackson recapture these VP towns, but he eliminated 4 brigades and a detachment (LEADER) HQs in the process for 5 VPs.

- Shields' division never exited the map, so the Feds got no VPs from that (1 VP per block). In fact, Shields' HQ was destroyed with most of his brigades at Woodstock, but remnants of the division fell back on Strasburg, where they were reinforced by divisional detachments (regiments) and part of Fremont's division to hold the town while Jackson headed south (see above) leaving a small, weakened force at Woodstock.

- The Federals kept the Confederates from capturing any blue VP towns.

It's a great block game that appears to be balanced with several strategic options for both sides. We look forward to playing it again.

I’ve been playing solitaire sessions to learn the system. The last scenario I played was The Battle of Sumy, that was tonight. It’s much better learning scenario then the one in the Crimea set, which is very static (thanks Iain K!).

Germans won on turn 4 by controlling five of the seven objective hexes. Soviets managed to eliminate (well, reduce) five German units. Tight game!

The GMT East Front system is very good. I will play The Battle of Sumy once more and then move to Battle on the Sea of Azov. I think I will play that scenario with my regular wargaming opponent.

Had the rematch of Metaurus with Patch tonight.

I got the advantaged Romans this time, and ended up doing pretty much the same opening move as Patch did (move up Cav on the Left).

Patch had a lot more trouble getting his troops moving than I had, though he did use two Counter Attacks. I mostly kept up the pressure on the Left, instead of going from section to section. A pair of Line Commands got things into general contact, despite a certain traffic jam in the middle.

Eventually, his right (my left) was all but gone. I actually won the game by killing his last unit there. Finished at 7-2, overall score is 10-9, so I win the set by one banner.

My biggest problem was that I didn't particularly want to engage on the Right, and my had had been slowly accumulating cards for that flank.

The Rocroi scenario continues. Contrary to expectations my French center repulsed the first attack of Michael's tercio's. Unfortunately my brave troops refused to counter-attack the temporarily disorganised Spanish. I'm curious what will happen now. The musket fire of those double HI-units is certainly deadly!

I played the introductory Battle of Sumer last month solo (Akkadian victory) and currently have the Battle of Sekmum on the table. The Canaanites are proving to be no push over for Senusret III's Egyptians. It could go either way.

I have not played GBoH for some time now and it is good to get back into the swing of things with it. Also, I have not solo'ed for years and it has been a joy to get back into that too! Lots of time to ponder and fondle cardboard... ahhh....

CoF was a good choice to play since it is relatively simple addition to the series. I have yet to try a battle with chariots though and have been prepping the counters for a battle that includes them. This game uses chit pull activation which is good for solo play and a departure from other GBoH games. Also, it uses the "rout to the standard" mechanism that I think is also a first for the series... it was in RHB's Men of Iron so was transplanted into CoF.

Thus far I am getting used to some of the abilities of the various weapon systems and also the timing of actions in the presence of the enemy. I was surprised at the effectiveness of the self bow armed troops....and they do not even have the superior composite bows. Another thing I noticed was the importance of being the aggressor in Shock Combat. Chances are they will not have to take a morale check whereas the defender will; failing it will make them lose cohesiveness even before a shield is pushed and a sword is swung!

EDIT: And the Canaanites won surprisingly. They got the better of the SI vs SI Shock Combat and just happened to come out on top of a few Engaged / Dual Rout tiebreakers. Also, Canaanite units had a nice habit of routing to their "standard" rather than fleeing the field (the latter count against the army rout total). Ra's glance has turned away from Pharaoh Senusret III.

I have a cunning plan
mbmbmbmbmb
With the failure of Operation Veritable, my campaign group is now switching over to the fight for the Red Barricade Factory in Stalingrad. But because our thirst for destruction is so strong, we're playing a variant with doubled orders of battle, ensuring a heavily crowded board and buckets of blood all over the place, as Terry Pratchett would say.
We'll be playing on VASL, since playing this in real cardboard would be nearly impossible.

Oh, and a few other ASL scenarios going on in the background, as usual).

After a very long wait it has been fun to finally play a couple games of The God Kings: Warfare at the Dawn of Civilization, 1500 – 1260BC. First, we played the introductory scenario of Egypt v. Hittites at Kadesh and then did the Napoleon of the Ancient World (Thutmose III) scenario. We really enjoyed both and found God Kings to be a fun, easy to learn, visually pleasing, game. The boys are already asking for a repeat. It was worth the wait.

After watching Marco's enthusiastic video review http://boardgamegeek.com/video/15616/conflict-of-heroes-stor... I thought I'd give this one a second look. It certainly has a different feel than ASL or Lock n Load. Managing when you activate your units and budgeting your command action points is key. It doesn't seem to have the swings of fate that produce tense scenarios and stories like in ASL or Lock N Load. Although, I do like the low counter density and quick playing nature of the game, but I think it needs more scenarios and I wish Conflict of Heroes: First Men In – Normandy 1944 would get published soon. I liked the game enough to place a preorder for Awakening the Bear 2nd edition. The component quality of the game is second to none. So many tactical games... so little time; I still haven't tried ATS yet.

Well spending $350 on The Devil's Cauldron: The Battles for Arnhem and Nijmegen and $110 on Where Eagles Dare is a bit out of my investment range, so I spent..I mean invested $20 in this game. It is a good little game that gives the feel of the battle with only a handful of counters and a small map.
