Games that Daughter the Elder will trade bedtime books to play

This list used to be about games that Daughter the Elder request to play by trading one of more of her bedtime. Her gaming is now spread out further across the day, plus the games she wants to play are getting a bit long to be played during the bedtime period. Thus some of the new entries may not involve trading a bedtime book :meeple:

Some of the games are still classified as one or two book games which indicates the number of bedtime books (out of three) she would trade for a game.

Since this a list of games that Daughter the Elder plays I have not opened this list up to public additions but feel free to add comments.

Top of the list because it is always a "two book" game. A well designed game that also builds enthusiasm for LEGO too. After playing it one or two times children who cannot yet read know what all the squares mean.

The Same Game from 2003

An excellent twist or addition to the standard "memory" game which, very importantly for the parents, vastly increases the replayability for all ages.

Junior Labyrinth from 2003
A bit simple for the parents, but it is interesting observing the child starting work out appropriate moves which will make the game more interesting (or enable us to graduate to the full version).

You can start with the regular version if you handicap it by giving your daughter 2 consecutive moves every turn.

Snakes and Ladders from late 2002

Within a few days of getting this as a four year old she could count to one hundred. A good game for developing an understanding of numbers and set backs in games (sliding down the snakes). There are those that claim this is a game of luck, but then why has my wife only won once in all the family contests in Snakes & Ladders :)

Note it was surprisingly hard to find a decent copy of Snakes and Ladders.

Updated with a photo of our board.

If you've got the $$ and storage space, Snakes and Ladders 3D is a lot of fun. The only place I've found it is jigsawjungle.com

More than just counting, she could *read* the numbers from 1 to 100.

Ludo from 2003

Commonly called Ludo in our neck of the woods. When playing with three or four players this can be a suprisingly long game. With setting up blocks and sending other players back home one of our recent games went 45 minutes.

03-Dec-2003 This is now either a two book game or banned from bedtime games. My wife, daughter and I played it recently and my wife and I were colluding to make it quick, i.e. not setting up blocks or deliberately stomping on each other and it still took 50 minutes! Our daughter made lots of blocks and gleefully stomped on us, but you would think with two out of the three players trying for a quick game it would have gone a bit quicker.

I would have to say that your daughter is very bright and that you two adults are going to be in deep doo-doo when she gets old enough to play serious strategy games!

Try the Kookaburra Game when you have more time to play. It's more interesting than Ludo or Parcheesi, but does take about an hour to play.

Running Six on a Checkerboard...plays better with 2 players than does the original Kookaburra Game. RSoaC has a shorter track, and each player has an extra kangaroo. Any full-size checkerboard (about 14"x14") can be used.
