Games that Daughter the Elder will trade bedtime books to play

This list used to be about games that Daughter the Elder request to play by trading one of more of her bedtime. Her gaming is now spread out further across the day, plus the games she wants to play are getting a bit long to be played during the bedtime period. Thus some of the new entries may not involve trading a bedtime book :meeple:

Some of the games are still classified as one or two book games which indicates the number of bedtime books (out of three) she would trade for a game.

Since this a list of games that Daughter the Elder plays I have not opened this list up to public additions but feel free to add comments.

Lego Creator 06-Aug-2003

Top of the list because it is always a "two book" game. A well designed game that also builds enthusiasm for LEGO too. After playing it one or two times children who cannot yet read know what all the squares mean.

The Same Game from 2003

An excellent twist or addition to the standard "memory" game which, very importantly for the parents, vastly increases the replayability for all ages.

A bit simple for the parents, but it is interesting observing the child starting work out appropriate moves which will make the game more interesting (or enable us to graduate to the full version).

You can start with the regular version if you handicap it by giving your daughter 2 consecutive moves every turn.

Snakes and Ladders from late 2002

Within a few days of getting this as a four year old she could count to one hundred. A good game for developing an understanding of numbers and set backs in games (sliding down the snakes). There are those that claim this is a game of luck, but then why has my wife only won once in all the family contests in Snakes & Ladders :)

Note it was surprisingly hard to find a decent copy of Snakes and Ladders.

Updated with a photo of our board.

Ludo from 2003

Commonly called Ludo in our neck of the woods. When playing with three or four players this can be a suprisingly long game. With setting up blocks and sending other players back home one of our recent games went 45 minutes.

03-Dec-2003 This is now either a two book game or banned from bedtime games. My wife, daughter and I played it recently and my wife and I were colluding to make it quick, i.e. not setting up blocks or deliberately stomping on each other and it still took 50 minutes! Our daughter made lots of blocks and gleefully stomped on us, but you would think with two out of the three players trying for a quick game it would have gone a bit quicker.

Dominoes from 2003

At the moment we play with the player's tiles face up. My daughter already plans her moves so that I can't move. My five year old has learnt EPT ("Evil Play Technique" TM). We may have to advance to proper rules with player's tiles hidden soon.

Uno from 2003

It used to be "My First Uno" a 36 card cut down version of UNO. Anyway a quick game which counts for 1/2 a book. She loves getting dealt Wild and +2 draw cards and takes great pleasure in playing +2 draw cards.

10-Dec-2003 We moved on to normal UNO on the weekend and she took to it instantly.

24-Mar-2004 Have barely touched My First Uno since UNO. It is now 100 points a book, or a few hands.

27-Aug-2004 It's now about 200 points a book. I think we are being manipulated here! Updated the image, this is Daughter the Younger after Daughter the Elder forgot to pack away her UNO cards. The cards survived :)

Go Fish 10-Dec-2003

Also introduced this on the weekend based on my wife's memory of the game. There are probably a huge number of variations - the one we are playing is draw 7 cards and you are completing pairs. The other ordinary pack of cards game we taught her on the weekend was Solitaire which she had been playing on a computer at her grandparents. We have advised her that at home it is played with a proper pack of cards :)

21-Feb-2004 The picture is probably not someone playing go fish, but at least they have a pair of cards!

Balloon Cup 29-Dec-2003

Melissa introduced her to this yesterday whilst I was out. She demanded that I play with her when I came home. We were down to the last 10 cubes and all of the trophies could have gone either way! She already has the concept of playing competitively, i.e. put low cards on my side for the mountain hop (although she is not so thrilled if I do it to her). At the moment this will be a two book game, because it is not as quick with a five year old.

20-Feb-2004 You'll be happy to know Stephen that this is now a one book game. Also if it is not bedtime she can play games without charge :) Nor does it ever count against her school reader (she just started school a couple of weeks ago).

01-Aug-2005 She has been requesting this a bit recently and has started winning it too :meeple:

With my 5-year-old, we play 'face up beans'. ie. everyone's hand is NOT secret, but is laying on the table. Makes it easier for them to get involved in the trading, and doesn't wreck the game as everyone is usually announcing what half their hand is anyhow in order to make offers to other players!

My 8-year-old prefers 'secret beans', though.

Monopoly since 06-Aug-2004

OK we don't actually play this very often, but she does occasionally request it and I can only so no so often. The first time we played was on her sixth birthday and the last time a week or so ago (April 2007).

We play the traditional version which is sold in Australia, i.e. where all the place names are from London. The first game we played was with three and it finished in thirty minutes! Playing two player is surprisingly cut throat, I tried my usual tactic of snapping up at least one of everything I landed on and trying to complete a set where I could. This tactic is actually economically unwise with two players as you just don't have enough money. I ended up getting the Green set (Oxford, Bond & Regent Streets) but had to mortgage everything to complete the set. Meanwhile Daughter the Elder had also completed a set and managed to put houses on it. It all went downhill from there quite quickly!

Hmm, I just noticed that the image is a nice close up shot, but has an illegal hotel placement given that the other property in the set only has one house on it.

I found a shrink wrapped copy of this on the shelves recently (it's a long story). Opened it up and Daughter the Elder saw it and now requests to play it. Other than deliberately placing pieces in precarious positions to trap the next player there's not a lot of decision making, but it teaches dexterity and it is short. We have the original Ravensburger branded edition.

Chess 12-Aug-2004

Guess who joined Chess Club at school without prompting from her parents in early 2004? She has learnt it quickly too. We haven't played many games yet.

The image is the one that most resembles our Staunton set which was mine when I was five.

[Update 21-Apr-2007] We don't play this a lot, but every now and again. If I don't give the game my full attention she can beat me, and possibly even if I do give it my full attention!

If she likes Chess, you might want to introduce her to the Gipf project games (Gipf, Tamsk, Zertz, Dvonn and Yinsh). They pretty much all offer as much strategy, but tend to play faster and are easier to teach (ie. she could introduce those games to her friends easier than chess).

Boggle 17-Aug-2004

Another recent birthday present. As she only started to learn to read earlier this year we are currently playing modified rules. She is allowed to score for two letter words and is allowed to score for a word that only one of Melissa or I get. The Mummy and the Daddy have to finish when the timer stops, she gets another flip of the timer. During this second period we have to cover our words to stop someone from copying them :)

Part of our recent haul from Germany, there's still quite a few that we haven't broken out for her yet.

The only real problem with this is that the bell attracts Daughter the Younger who would prefer to a) play with the bell and/or b) eat the cards

She has requested this a few times recently. For the first couple of games we played with open hands. Tonight the last round was the first with normal closed hands.

Already she is complaining about the lousy deal of cards at the start :meeple:

Maybe I should show her my list Games where the intial deal or position does *not* make you say "I can do great things with this" but instead makes you say things that would make the competitors at the Pirates Extreme Cursing World Championships bow down with envy and admiration. http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist.php3?action=view&listi...

On second thoughts that can probably wait ten or more years ;)

One of the games from my childhood, in fact we play with my childhood copy. As at the time of entering this game on the list we have played a dozen times, which puts me at the top of the list for this game.

The first game or two I slaughtered her, and then I decided to spot her $500 to start to even things out. We have now reduced that to $300 and it can be touch or go who wins. We use my poker chip for currency under $100 and play to anywhere between $100,000 and $300,000 depending on how ambitious Daughter the Elder is feeling. She likes games where you can accumulate money :meeple:

I might have to try her out with Squatter at some stage, I am sure she would enjoy the Wool Cheque when it arrives.
