This is the traditional weekly thrift and bargain finds list.
These lists may start empty, but as always, add your items.
Put in what you consider a bargain, tell us how much you paid and the place you got it from. Bargains can be thrift store finds or any second-hand purchases or discounted boardgames bought new. Don't forget to add your encounters with the Thrift Store Irritant Squad and any other embellishments in order to make it even more interesting.
The Thrift Store/Bargain Finds List Wayback Machine: The Grand Vizier is maintaining a list of all the weekly lists through time. He is also adding stats and interesting tidbits for us thrifty geeks. Your Thrift Store Bargain Finds Through Time (with links to all previous lists)
Our GeekGuild: Welcome to The Ancient and Loyal Order of Thrifters. Enter the halls of thriftdom at your own risk. Please do mind the stacks of prized games, do not mention the musty smell and try not to sneeze. Make sure to bow before our King Hakfoo I, and pay your due respects to previous Kings Belial, Great_Mazinga, minionhunter, Krazygit, EvilTimmy and Blackwind.
The Order's Anthem: Sing along with our good old thrifty theme song...
"He called me an inane drone." "What's an inane drone?" "Well..It's a dull bee..." "You ARE an inane drone."
"some day we'll look back on this and it will all seem funny..."
Kids' version. $1.50, same church thrift. Looks like it may have been played a few times, but good condition. Allows us to get the younger ones involved in some of the family games. And there's enough elem aged kids in the house to have this thing get a workout.
Strat-o-matic Baseball, box style shown, $4.99 at GW. This appears to be the 1970 Season (roster list says '1971 Strat-o-matic 24 Team Baseball Rosters...', but a strat fan website says this is the 1970 'strat' season.
Looks to be complete, but I've only inventoried about half of the teams. I have cards for nine teams and one set of blank 'nameless' cards (for adding rookies and trades, eh?).
I know nothing about Strat-o-matic. But this looks to be in very very nice condition. A few of the cards have rubber band gunk, but most look unplayed. It looks like the only teams that got a bit of use were SF and Oakland. Kind of wild to read names like Willie Mays, Bobby Bonds, Willie McCovey, Willie Stargell (what's with all the Willies?), Pete Rose, Rollie Fingers, Reggie Jackson, and on and on and on.
And I love the cover on this. Wonderful.
Teams I have: Minnesota Twins St Louis Cardinals Pittsburgh Pirates Baltimore Orioles Oakland A's SF Giants LA Dodgers Cincinnati Reds Chicago Cubs
St. Vincent FINALLY opened in its new location today, so stopped in after work. It's bigger, it's brighter, it has the same selection of crap games and puzzles it had in the old one. Saw the Monopoly: Deluxe Edition and thought to snag it for the gold bits and wood houses, except they were already swiped out of the box.
Wandered about over to the books and saw this in the kids book section:
Wasn't quite sure what it was, but now that I've looked it up I might go back for it.
Next to it was this Battletech book. I couldn't leave it, it was only $.75. There must be someone who would like it, I just need to find them, right??
Walked back over to the toys and saw this. Yes, I have lots of poker chips and racks and cards. But this still had the contents in shrink. It was $3.99 and I'll probably put it up in the next no ship math trade or the auction at the convention. It's a nice set, decent chips, a rack, two decks of cards and a 48x30 felt mat.
In excellent condition, with box and instructions. Unfortunately, lots of nasties under the D battery compartment cover. The batteries aren't super old at least so will try to clean this out tomorrow and see if I can fire it up.
Found an 800 count box overstuffed with Yu-Gi-Oh cards today for $4.
After an hour of sorting, looks like I mostly struck out. About a dozen total URs and SRs, about 30-40 Rares. About 40% of the rest are 1st Edition commons.
Oddly though, there were a few noteworthy counterfeits in it:
Graceful Dice and Skull Dice - the counterfeiting is laughable, and the cardbacks they adhered them to are cleanly peeling away.
These will be trashed
Also, the box contained two Fake cards that simply don't exist as real cards:
Yami Yugi Character Card and Joey Wheeler Character Card
I've seen sales of these on ebay for $25 or so. But... who would ever buy them? I mean, as shiny and foily as they are (and they do look nice) -- they simply are not legal cards!
Which brings me to my question: If I were to list this lot for sale, and include the fake cards, and calling them out AS fake cards... would that disqualify my listing? (or, dare I say, would it enhance it?)
