After the modest success of my previous Geeklist "2011 is looking good!", I decided to continue the tradition into 2012 with a new list. It is still early so there aren't too many games to add right now but, as time progresses, more titles will be added. Just like in the previous Geeklist, feel free to submit games you are looking forward to in 2012. Also, if you enjoyed reading this, please thumb!

Previous list:

Now, let's get started, shall we?

I love, love, love the art and theme of this game! I really hope the gameplay is solid. Asmodee may have a real winner here. The description for this game is very interesting, so I will just copy and paste for your convenience.

From the BGG description: "Seasons is a game of cards and dice which takes place in two phases:

The first consists of a draft. The goal during this phase will be to establish a strategy for the rest of the game with nine cards that can be selected (Each card has a specific effect and earns victory points).

Once the draft is complete, each player must separate its three 9 cards in packs of 3 cards. He will begin the second phase of the game with his first pack of three cards, then gradually as the game progresses, he will receive two packets of three cards.

Then comes the second phase of play at the beginning of each round a player will roll the dice seasons (1 dice per player + 1).

These cubes offer a variety of actions to the players:

- Increase your invocation (maximum number of cards you may have placed on table)
- Harvesting energy (water, earth, fire, air) to pay the cost of invocation maps
- Crystallization energy (during the current season) to collect crystals. These serve both as a resource to rely on some cards, but also many points of victory in the endgame.
- Draw new cards ...

Each player can choose only one die per turn. The first player will choose among those launched, then the following among those remaining and so on. At each turn, the dice indicates how many remaining cells (1, 2 or 3 boxes) the marker of the seasons ahead.

In addition, all the dice are different depending on the season. For example, there is not the same energies to a particular season. Throughout the game, players will therefore have to adapt to these changes.

At the end of the game we add the points of victory on the cards given the number of crystals possessed. The player with the most victory points wins."

Seasons plays 2-4 in 60 minutes.

Game description:

"The language of creation was stolen and given to Eve, and with it the power to alter reality. Inheritors of this forbidden knowledge have walked amongst us for millenia, scrabbling for greater power, controlling mankind, seeking god-hood and are known as Magi.

Players become Magi, by building their Hardbound Spell Codex with Incantations and casting them using an actual functioning language, in competitive battles and cooperative adventures.

Serpent's Tongue is a spell casting simulation game, with a stand alone core set that is expandable with Inscription Packs."

This is the game on Kickstarter that has me the most interested right now. I used to always love playing spell casters in RPGs, video games, and board games. This game is all focused on players casting spells against each other. What is a neat twist is that not only do you have lots of spells, but you each have faux leather spell books and actually have to cast the spell itself (speak it). Seems like a combination of RPG and a Magic type of game.

The core game seems to provide you a lot for $45 and there appears to be a lot of room for expansions. So far the game seems to be selling fast. You can see the amount of enthusiasm this game is generating by seeing how quickly the high-level pledge levels are selling out and by the fact that the average backer (125 so far) has chosen to pledge $130 to get more extras.

A new game from FFG that has some awesome art. Unfortunately, the estimated game time is 3 hours, which is probably too long for my group. This game may be similar to Kings of Air and Steam but we will have to wait and see.

From the BGG description: "Command your own skyship and become a master merchant in Sky Traders, a board game of commerce and intrigue for two to five players. Evade the ruthless Wind Pirates as you collect influence with the powerful Sky Guild. Manipulate the commodity market using your powers of persuasion. Through clever trades and resourceful captaining, you can seize the title of Master of the Sky Guild!

Each round of Sky Traders takes place in two main phases. In the first phase, players sail their ships and perform actions. To start, each player draws an Ill Wind card, which has a variety of effects that can help or hinder players. The Sky Patrol could attack you for carrying contraband, or the Wind Pirates might try to board your vessel in hopes of plundering valuable goods. If you're lucky, you'll stumble upon a treasure map that leads to riches. It's all up to fate when you draw from the Ill Wind deck."

Sky Traders plays 2-5 players in 3 hours.

Another new AEG game that could be fun. In Smash Up, your goal is to smash as many bases as possible. The fun part is that you have factions that will aid you in your smashing endeavors. If they add enough factions and the gameplay is solid, Smash Up could be an extremely long-lived game for my group. Plus, AEG is listening to what ideas people have for new factions!

From the BGG description: "The "shufflebuilding" game Smash Up starts with a simple premise: Take the twenty-card decks of two factions, shuffle them into a forty-card deck, then compete to smash more Bases than your opponents! Each faction brings a different game mechanism into play pirates move cards, zombies bring cards back from the discard pile, dinosaurs have huge power and every combination of factions brings a different play experience.

During play, Base cards (each with their own difficulties and abilities) are in play. You attempt to have the most power on the Base from your minions when the Base is smashed. Sounds easy? How easy is it when an opponent's Alien-Ninja decides to Beam Up your minions to other Bases - flat out Assassinate them? What about when the Pirate-Dinosaur player Full Sails in and releases King Rex to stomp your minions into the ground, or when the Wizard-Zombies use their Mystic Power to create an Outbreak, suddenly flooding minions onto the Base from the discard pile? Or what if you faced a Zombie-Dinosaur player instead and he created an Outbreak of massive beasts all at once?!?"

Smash Up plays 2-4 players in 45 minutes.

I used to be excited for this, what with me being a big fan of the LotR:LCG, but it appears this has been sent back into the development phase. Rumors are also saying that this is now a PvP game. Eh. That kills the interest for me if true. I hope they keep it as a co-op LCG but we will see.

From the BGG description (which may no longer be accurate): "Star Wars: The Card Game is a cooperative card game that puts 1-4 players in command of the Rebel strike force and mission team. Players command different Rebel strategies melded together to embark upon a perilous mission while the Imperials scour space to find and destroy the Rebel base.

Each mission is divided into a number of stages, represented by individual cards in a mission deck. Each stage of a mission has a limited window of time during which Rebels can successfully perform the necessary tasks. If they take too long, the Rebels will fail, and the Imperials will win the stage. Each turn, the Imperials move closer to finding the Rebel's hidden base, making it more difficult for the Rebels to successfully win the final stage, complete the mission, and achieve victory."

It looks like the Kickstarter campaign for this was successful, so it should see a 2012 release. Sunrise City appears to be a tile placement game with a theme similar to Sim City the video game. Some of the building tiles look really sharp.

From the BGG description: "In the tile-laying game Sunrise City, players build a city with zone tiles, bid for control of those zones, then place building tiles on the city zones to their best advantage. Each round the players use role cards to grant them special abilities in the various game phases. Points earned during play move score tokens up a ten point track. Players score one benchmark token if their score marker overshoots the star at the top of their score track but earn two benchmarks if their token lands on the star by exact count. So, Sunrise City is not a race to score the most points, it's a contest to grow the city in a manner that will earn you the right number of points at the right time to maximize your benchmarks. After three rounds, the player with the most benchmarks wins."

Sunrise City plays 2-4 in about 45 minutes.

I saw some other reprints on the list so I am adding one that I am really looking forward to. Pandasaurus Games announced a reprint via Kickstarter: http://pandasaurusgames.com/project/tammany-hall/

In Tammany Hall, players help immigrants settle in New York, collect political favors from those immigrant groups, send ward bosses into Manhattan to secure votes and slander political opponents. An election is held at the end of every fourth year, and the player who uses his power base best will be elected mayor. The Mayors grip on the city is tenuous at best. After every election, the Mayor must pay off his political rivals by placing them in offices that they can wield to try and take control of the city. Every player is your friend, every player is your enemy.

My friend Dave Koch says, "It is pure spite/hate in a box!"

A dexterity game akin to King of Tokyo? The description of this game is just too funny so I will copy and paste it.

From the BGG description: "The purpose of the game is to play big monsters destroying a town and eating his inhabitants (meeples).

There are 6 kind of meeples :
- blue (journalists),
- green (military),
- yellow (blonde),
- grey (old people),
- red (heroes),
- black.

You can destroy buildings and eat meeples by :
- finger-flicking your monster and hit meeples,
- blowing on meeples,
- dropping your monster on a building in order to destroy it and free the meeples inside the building,
- hitting another monster and stealing his trophies."

And yes, you actually blow on meeples. Rampage plays 2-4 in 45 minutes.

I am a big Thunderstone fan. More Thunderstone is always welcome, in my opinion, and a new wave with some new mechanics is headed our way in Thunderstone Advance!

In Thunderstone Advance you build your party of heroes to defeat the dreaded Thunderstone Bearers in their dungeons or wilderness. The player who defeats the most valuable monsters will win the day, but beware those monsters have all-new tricks up their sleeves, and victory will not come easy.

Thunderstone Advance includes new rules, all new cards in new card frames, and a new village and dungeon board."

A light dexterity game for the whole family. Perfect for "pizza night." I had a chance to try it this week (I can be spotted in their latest video) and it's a lot of fun! Easy enough for kids, but sufficiently tactical to make it entertaining for adults, too. I pre-ordered a couple of copies for my family members who have kids aged 6-10.

P.S. We - the parents/adults - grew up playing Crokinole, so Top This! is second nature).

Just a little over 2 weeks to go on Kickstarter.

I have yet to play A Touch of Evil but I know it has a cult following. This expansion features new characters, villains and locations! And the photographic art is always fun.

From the BGG description: "A Touch of Evil: The Coast is packed full of new material for A Touch of Evil including four exciting new Heroes, a new full size game board of the fog-shrouded coastline to add to the main Shadowbrook board, new Town Elders, and a host of new mysteries to be solved. The Coast also features tons of new game cards including decks for new Locations to explore, The Smuggler's Cove, Lighthouse, a haunted Shipwreck, and the long cursed village of Tidewater; and much more! With four fearsome new Villains to hunt like The Ghost Ship, Siren, or the dreaded Dreamweaver, the Heroes must fend off deadly curses and contend with all manner of creatures from the dark depths to keep evil at bay, forcing it back into the icy waters that break along the rocky shores of The Coast."

Alright, why not. I'm not a huge fan of the video games but the board game version seems to have a decent designer so we will see.

From the BGG description: "Welcome to the world of Uncharted: Board Game! In this game, you take on the role of a treasure hunter and compete with other players to gain the most Victory Points. The variety of cards that you collect represent skills and items necessary for or sought after by treasure hunters. You can increase your chances of winning by adding useful cards to your play area. Venture into dangerous ruins, search them thoroughly, and defeat waves of enemies to become a legendary treasure hunter!"

Uncharted plays 2-4 in 45 minutes.

Paolo Mori's new game, by Asmodee/Asterion.

I already tried it and it is a very clever boardgame which somehow reminds me of the good bits of Citadels (due to his heavy dependance of character abilities - LOTS of different characters).

It has quickly become one of my most wanted for 2012.

Anterpryse/Fourmys/Antipolys ?

Next big game from Ystari - Essen 2012. Very nice and reasonnably short (nice pheromone tiles, some minor fighting, developpign an anthill, and a very clever system for tweaking round bonuses to your playstyle...). Me want.

Game description from the publisher:

In Urbanization, the players follow the development of a rural area, from the beginning of the industrial revolution to modern times. They guide their villages through hard times and try to attract citizens by building houses. Later, factories are erected and the villages grow into prospering cities.

The player who develops his city most efficiently will be victorious in the end.

Game play in Urbanization includes no random elements, and the game comes packaged with two expansions.

TMG just announced that they would be releasing Village to NA this year. This is a worker placement game where villagers can kick the bucket. It almost sounds like playing The Sims, where different family members have different amibitions and occupations. Looks neat.

From the BGG description: "Life in the village is hard – but life here also allows the inhabitants to grow and prosper as they please. One villager might want to become a friar. Another might feel ambitious and strive for a career in public office. A third one might want to seek his luck in distant lands.

Each player will take the reins of a family and have them find fame and glory in many different ways. There is one thing you must not forget, however: Time will not stop for anyone and with time people will vanish. Those who will find themselves immortalized in the village chronicles will bring honor to their family and be one step closer to victory.

Village is a game full of tactical challenges. A smart and unique new action mechanism is responsible for keeping turns short and yet still tactically rich and full of difficult decisions. Also unique is the way this game deals with the delicate subject of death; as a natural and perpetual part of life in the village, thoughts of death will keep you focused on smart time-management."

Village plays 2-4 in about an hour.
