I love great expansions. You can get more gameplay out of a game that was getting old and expand your collect without having to learn a whole new game. But not all expansions are great.

I start this in part for my own personal gain. I am more attracted to games with great expansions and am hoping that you can point out some really good games that have some great expansions along with them.

Please list games here that have mostly excellent expansions not just fluff. Also, if only some of the expansions are awesome than note the ones that you really like (or the ones you don't).

EDIT: Also, be sure to check out this great list-Games with subpar expansions

Yes, this is an old, OOP game.
So as the Space Crusade: Mission Dreadnought expansion.
But i can't imagine the game played without it anymore. It is much better than the Eldar expansion 'cause it keep the game balanced while it adds a lot of (cheesy) weapons for the marines and new options for the alien player.

I'm jumping ahead here, a bit -- I anticipate that the planned expansion will be superb.

The original Ardennes '44 went until December 26. The reprint, in which the expansion is incorporated, takes the game to December 30, allowing players to simulate the American counterattack.

There are 2 expansions for this game, each with several different modular add-ons. I've found a selected mix of mini-expansions from each of these expansions significantly improve this game, making it for me, the best roll-and-move out there (and that's alot more than it seems like, as this is actually a good roll and move in its own right without the expansions, and there are some other solid ones, mostly by Kramer out there).

SFB Expansion #1 was one of the first must-have expansions, as it fixed so many of the rules and introduced fighters, improved drones, and really rounded out the game. #2 included lots more, but it wasn't truly essential.

An excellent little game, whether played solo or co-operatively. The expansion, known simply as the Aliens Expansion, added new maps, new enemies, multiple new scenarios, an expanded campaign and many fun, optional rules. Amazing how much was squeezed into that little package.

A fine game in its own right--though only for those who find the simulation of American Civil War naval battles fascinating.

Its first (and only official, I guess) expansion is The Ironclads Expansion Kit. It's nice, but I wouldn't call it superb. It changes a few things and adds scenarios from other wars in the period.

The truly superb expansion is Shot and Shell. Technically it's not an expansion at all. It's a stand-alone game with a different designer and from a different publisher. But it's very clearly a reworking of Ironclads. It even includes a compatibility chart that links the original game scenarios with S&S.

With S&S, you get more of what made the original game great. You also get some streamlined rules, including a useful method for firing more than one same-caliber gun at once (in the original game it can get tedious firing one at a time). Then you get a complete land-warfare game system! Now you can re-create amphibious operations or even fight land-only battles (if you want to design them).

It's debatable whether S&S counts as an expansion, but if you count it, it's a superb one IMO.

The Phantom League is made excellent by the addition of the Mostly Harmless expansion. It fixes a few card errors, adds a much-needed bigger box, adds two new ships, and, of course, lots of new cards which make the game experience even better. Necessary if you have the base game.

A game that can be looked at as either a self-contained boardgame, or a starting point for a tabletop miniatures skirmish system, Legions of Steel had many expansions. Topping the list, however, was Legions of Steel Scenario Pack 1.

Inexpensive even in it's day (it goes for ~$7 now), it added a dozen excellent missions to the base game, along with optional rules, stats for new miniatures, and even a fold-out flap from the cover with a bunch of additional counters. These days I'd recommend anyone who has the game to pick it up, as it adds many, many hours of additional gameplay using only the components from the base game.

Perfect example of a perfect expansion.

A great game that saw so much play that a dominant shadow strategy emerged, causing the play to shift towards unbalanced and deterministic (not broken, just a little bent).

The expansion added new options and obstacles to the game and nudged it back towards balanced and dynamic play.

Of course, they've revised the cards for the recently released 2nd Edition, which may negate the need for the expansion, but I'm sure as Sauron going to hold on to mine.

This expansion for Fresco takes the base game to a new level. I'm not talking about the Wishing Well, but the Glaziers Expansion in the box. Having to decide to purchase stained glass blobs and using them to complete fresco tiles around the edge or else lose points turns this game (as my wife says) into Caylus. I rather like Caylus, so this expansion appeals to me.

Surprised we got this far without Inns and Cathedrals.

I generally don't like expansions, avoid buying them, and don't often use the ones that came with my base game. I don't use the Citadels expansion cards. I own no expansions for RftG, or Pandemic, or Agricola, or Alhambra. Kingsburg: To Forge a Realm is a welcome exception, but to be honest I could have written 0 1 1 2 3 4 on some poker chips and gotten 90% of what I wanted, there.

Most of the other Carc expansions strike me as needlessly complex, and take away some of the most appealing aspects of the game. Inns and Cathedrals is absolutely necessary. I can't imagine playing Carcassonne without the added strategic depth of the Ubermeeple.

Expanding it old school.

I'm not especially interested in playing 8-hour games any more, and the mechanics, theme, and epic scope of games like AdCiv are now much better presented by newer, shorter games. But back about 5 BC, ("Before Catan") when we didn't know any better, AdCiv was a phenomenal gaming experience.

There are some people who think the base Civilization is better than AdCiv. These people are wrong; they deserve ostracism and mockery. Do not speak to or even make eye contact with such people -- who can say what infectious madness could lead to such a twisted perception of reality?

And to double down on the expansiony goodness, the Western Expansion Map adds considerably greater strategic options for Africa and Iberia.

I throw in Ticket to Ride: Alvin & Dexter now and then if I want a wackier game, but this is now part of the base game for me meeple

Does the 'map collection' count as an expansion?

Have only had this for a short time, but the 'legendary' map is very good, and the team version adds an interesting dimension. Maybe a bit over-priced for what you get, although the quality is DoW's usual top-notch.

I really don't know why with all the fan-made maps on BGG it took DoW so long to realise they were missing out on a potentially enormous revenue stream by not publishing more maps. Long may it continue!

I quite like ToI and we have a long running campaign growing.. as a brit of course the DotF expansion introducing the british makes the game 200% better. AND the british figures enact far less friendly fire whistle

tbh i think i just like the additional maps/options as a couple of us tend to write our own scenarios for ToI and it was a game in need of more maps to do this with.

The best RoboRally expansion. Six great boards with great new board elements: Water, Levels, Teleporters. And 26 options!

The other expansions are great, too:

Crash & Burn - Oil, Fire, Portals
Gran Prix - Chop Shops, Repulsor Fields, Oil, Portals

Radioactive, IMO wasn't quite as good, but I still like it.

This game was great without an expansion but the elements that were added with this really brought out what was great about the game and smoothed out some edges that were arguably a bit rough.

In the base game there was sometimes a long early game battle over getting action #3. This game changed that dynamic very effectively.

It also added some interesting new routes.

Honorable Mention: Britannia
I haven't played it enough to know for sure but it is enjoyable so far as well.
