The check is in the mail.
One size fits all.
This won't hurt a bit.
Your table will be ready in a minute.
Plays 2-6 players.

Ok, we all have a few pet peeves when it comes to gaming. For some of us it's slow players. For others it's those folks who instead of rolling the dice gently on the table fling them so they go rolling off the table every time. For me it's the classic publisher's "plays 2-6 people". It's the gamers version of the check is in the mail.

This is the problem. Most games sell better when they're more flexible on how many people can play them. A strict 4 player game for example has a more narrow appeal than one that can be advertised to play 2-6. So game companies understandably really like it when a game is designed with a very wide range in number of players. However in many cases this results in the classic round peg in a square hole. A designer designs a really good game for 4 or 5 players but then the publisher asks for special rules for 2 players so they can get that desired range.

I actually had one designer (who shall remain nameless) admit to me once on a game that was listed as 2-6 players that he had never even play tested the 2 player rules. He simply wrote them in about an hour for inclusion into the rule book after the publisher requested them.

Ok, this isn't a horrible problem that threatens the entire gaming hobby. Like I said, it's a simple little pet peeve of mine and a minor one at that. However it does often leave people scratching their heads on a game. Yeah, it says it plays 2 plays....but does it really play 2 players or is it a round peg in a square hole?

This list is not about games designed to be played with 2 players. It's a list about popular games designed to be played with 4 or 5 players. Games that also have special rules that allow them to be played with 2 players. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. many I have no idea about because I've never tried to play them 2 player.

The purpose of this list is to help the average gamers who here on BGG sees all these wonderful 4-5 player games but may not have a consistant 4-5 player game group. They would like to play games like Puerto Rico and Caylus but don't know if these popular titles honestly and truly work as 2 players.

So I leave the answers for you. Are these games really good for 2 players or are they round pegs in a square hole?

I've only recently been exposed to this game but quickly learned why it's so popular. It's a great strategy game with a very wide appeal. It's also the reason for this this. I've been thinking about playing it with my wife, perhaps this weekend, but I question how well it actually plays as a 2 player game. Looks promising for 2.

Our Fraser and Melissa love this as 2 player. Me and the Mrs-ho hum. I think for two its sort of like playing you. Sure there are decisions to be made but we found it to have little influence over the other persons decisions. I would play this again as two though but not my first choice

I'm sure the aforementioned couple well give you some positive feedback.

I find this game works great with two players and play it that way all the time. It plays *differently* than if you have more players, but that keeps it kind of refreshing.

Really fun game in my opinion. But 2 players? In my mind this one is a strict 4 player game. I just can't see it played with 2.

I totally agree with Ejammer. My wife (Miss Panda) and I love this game 2-player and have gone head to head many times. In fact, if a game says 3-player and more I won't buy it anymore because it won't be cost-effective.

This, I so agree with!

Both in terms of Goa's play and in term's of Jimzik's 3 player floor putting a big nada on my buying a game.

Games must work with 2 players (AND more) to get my cash now-a-days, but--yes--I have broken this rule in a couple of purchases.

As much as I like the auction, and how it is set up, I find the exploration cards are so unevenly powered they mess up the game, IMHO. You get a good card, it is killer, but they are all not uber-powerful, and some are quite weak, meaning the exploration cards are a critical element of the game, but a crapshoot.

For me, this does not make for a fun game at all.

Works pretty well with 2.

All you do is not use the stables (turn changes every round) and pay 3 after one player has passed.

However, I'm yet to beat Sue at it with just the two of us. I have a (not unrealistic) problem of being in the inn when it's really no use to me.

Another plus is we can play it in about 45 minutes!

I think the game shines with 2. Very tactical game, almost as deep as any 2p game there is. 3+ players and the game is much longer (30+ minutes per player) and a lot more random. Good with any number of players, but I get a lot of griping when playing with more then 3.

Always had fun with this as two players. You get to choose two characters and this allows you to create combinations which IMHO adds to the gameplay in a different way then with multiple players.

It is a totally different game if you play it with 2-4 to the game you have with 5-7 players. I think I have noted this before about Citadels. It is interesting how people either like it with fewer players or with more. I prefer it with more.

This game doesn't work with 7-8 that's for sure, I've never finished a game with that many players. 6 I've never tried. 5 and 4 works, but I love this game with 2 or 3. Yes, it devolves somewhata at 2 players to a game of psychology. But I like it

Echoing other comments on this list, this game shines as 3 player.

This one does work with two, but it's much better with 3 or more. One of the things I like about this game is the way the order of priority changes with each round, depending on who has the most cities (or highest level power plant). It really forces you to decide when and how much you want to build. With 2, this element of the game is greatly diminished. Still fun, though.

Just played with more than 2 for the first time (had 4 people). MUCH better with more.

With 2, I could see how much fun the game could be, and why, but didn't feel it. Very little meaning to the auctions, and the connections weren't being fought over. Found it very dry.

Now with 4, it was awesome. The auctions had alot of meaning, and try being the guy who was moving towards a group of cities, and then gets shut out because the other three just filled them up.

Playable with 2, but not nearly as much fun.

2 is certainly playable and I have great fun playing it with my girlfriend - this week we played and she beat me out by 24 Elektro in the end, very tight game all round really!

Auctions are not meaningless, as the second player always pays face value, but sometimes victory hinges on the lone 7 power plant available at which point you soon find out who's manuevred into position the best.

I love this game as 2 player, but I *LOVE* it with 4. With 4 players suddenly the possibility of being completely shut out of a city looms large, and the geographical aspect becomes much more important.

The playability of this game at 2 and 4 players is what makes this a perfect 10 for me.

i've really only had the opportunity to play this game with two players so far. i enjoy it but i can imagine that it is much better with three or four players. in a two player game, the score is always really tight at the end because neither player has any trouble fulfilling their missions. there are plenty of boards available to win or at least split between two players. its too easy with two people. three or four i think would be fun.

the dummy hand is more of an annoyance than anything. without it of course the two player game would be even less strategic but it is NO substitute for another thinking player.

At first, I thought the main benefit of the 2 player game was to learn the mechanics of the game as well as see what is possible if your 'allied' factions actually were. In other words, how much could be accomplished through collusion. However, after playing the 2 player version, I now realize that it is actually a very good game as well. Not only does controlling two factions allow for the collusion, it also allows the allied factions to utilize their strengths to overcome their weaknesses. One faction can be focusing on the boardplay while the other focuses on the economical aspects. It's more like a chess match with many more options.

I'm currently playing a 2 player PBeM game of RR using Cyberboard (it takes about one week per turn which isn't too bad) and I would play again without hesitation. I'm hoping to start a new one after this game and switch sides with my opponent. It's worth a try if you like the game in the first place.

This one was terrible with 2 since you have to control two factions each and one faction is omitted. In fact, this game as well as Here I Stand have me questioning their playability. Obviously the ideal amount of players for Revo is 5 (one per faction)...I can't imagine ever getting 5 consenting adults to play a game of this particular theme.

Also, for those who want a more dynamic game (or complain about the full complement game being too static), the two player game has seen far more conflict and large assaults than I've seen in most other plays.

I've played 2, 4 and 5 player games of R:tDR (which is what the RR was supposed to have read above) and they all play well but are very different strategically.

This one I know works very well with 2 and is part of the reason why I think Puerto Rico will as well. Someone recently told me that they also bought two copies of this game so to have a bigger game deck. Doesn't effect the game at all but makes for a lot less shuffling with more cards.

I do wish Puerto Rico used the art they have on these cards for the buildings. I've seen where someone has made PR building tiles you can download from BGG featuring the artwork from here.

My wife thought the same, so now we play to 15 buildings rather than 12. That made the development aspect come into play more, and she now enjoys it. We just picked 15 without any particular reason, I imagine any number up to 20 or so would work, to give the building advantages a chance to be useful.

To me this one really only works as a three player game, due to the role selection. As a 4P there's no angst, since most roles will be chosen by someone, and as a 2P the role selection is a bit too obvious and zero sum.

perfect with 2 - my first 10 times went with 2 players. later playing with 3 or 4 players, i didn't like as much as with 2. a good alternative to play when you aren't enough for Puerto Rico (i don't like it with 2, i like it best with 4)

I've played this with 4 players and with 5 players, and actually think it worked better with 4, but expect it would be worse with 3, and can't even imagine playing it with only 2. Outstanding game, but not for a couple I don't think.

It's a while since I've played this and have only played it as a 2-player. It worked very well since you don't know how much an item is worth to your opponent. It probably works better with more but the 2-player certainly does not feel like an add-on.

I would think with this one 2 players would more likely mean 2 players playing 2 characters each for 4 characters total. However that still counts.

My brother & I played this twice this weekend, 2-player. (We won both times, for what it's worth...) I haven't played it with more than 3, so I don't know whether it's better or worse with 2 than with 4-6 players. (This game is "just OK" to me, but my brother likes it a lot.)

Played this:

once alone with the cats, so playing three investigators, very exciting, and won.

twice with the wife and the cats, so two players with two investigators each, had fun, even more exciting, and won both times.

once with six players, found concentration waning, and we lost to the Old One, in an almost anti-climatic endgame, to boot.

I think it works very well with two players.

I enjoy playing games of this with two, but I have one quibble with the setup. If both players are combat oriented, the battle with the Ancient One can potentially become very easy for the investigators. In a game with four or more players there will usually be one or several characters without as much combat talent, or without the necessary trophies, clues, etc., leading to a much more desperate battle.

I feel that the final battle should be almost impossible if it occurs, not an opportunity for Jenny to get some new Yig skin boots. goo

Played this three times in the last couple weeks, with two players playing one investigator each. Killed Ithaqua, killed Nyarlathotep, sealed six gates against Yog-Sothoth. With two, there are plenty of clue tokens to go around, and the streets don't get totally choked with monsters even if you totally ignore them (the limit is 5). And the Ancient One's difficulty scales with player number, so this is completely doable.

Here's a game that I think works better with fewer players and yes it does work with 2...sort of. The problem with this game with 5 is hunters can get bored. If your hunter is out at sea there isn't much for you to do so you move and then watch other players as they do encounters and such. I've noticed 5 player games tend to move slowly.

With 3 players however each player plays 2 hunters and always has things to do each round. I think this game definately works best with 3.

The game plays the same with 2 but it leaves the hunter player with 4 characters to run and that's a bit much for one person.

Interesting, I would have thought this would have been brutal 2 players... I can see the dracula player spending most of his time waiting on one player. Half the fun of playing dracula is sitting back and watching people try to figure out that crazy move you just pulled.

I actually enjoy this as a 2 player. The Europe edition works well also. There are some interesting decisions you need to make sometimes as you only have a single path to use where 4-5 players may use the double paths. This is especially so if you pick up tickets in the same area or close by. With 3 players it is even more congested.

Just tried Belgium and Cuba (printed from DoW website and pasted on large sheets), which both are much smaller and tighter than the original maps and they work much better for two players with a lot of (un-)intentional blocking.

Don't get me wrong ... this is a great game.

I received this and Masons at the same time, and played them one after the other.

I came away thinking that they were both excellent games, but Thurn and Taxis was the better (slightly).

However, with each consecutive play, T&T has proved a very similar experience, while Mason has just improved.

a great game, but works better with 3 or 4. you can play it with 2 to get intimate with the details or to introduce somebody else. but you play side by side. it's not interesting to get into conflict - better try another coup while your opponent invest his resourses in his object.

Play primarily with 2; have played with more. This is a game that gets "lighter" and more luck driven with increasing numbers of players. With 2 you can count on getting 1/2 of the tiles, so by memorizing the tile mix it becomes a Go-like connecion cutting game. More adds a risk-like social aspect to the game, though (I'll give you a cookie if you don't close my farm).

Blue Moon and Blue Moon City are very different games.

If you like the two player game, there's no reason why you might like this. And vice-versa.

This one does play better with 4 than with 2 though, but it's fun with 2 as well.

Ok, cheating a bit here because this one hasn't been released yet. Says it works with 2 but being an auction game I suspect 2 players wouldn't be a good way to play it.

From what I have played, it plays a little differently, but the fun is still there with 2-5 players. Slower game the more the players, but that is normal. Better than Palazzo for this medium box size of Alea's. After some of the newer Alea games, I was wondering when we'd get back to some keepers.

Another popular title I haven't played yet. 2 to 5 but I would imagine the gameplay with 2 would lack what makes it such a popular 4 player game.

I'll play devil's advocate...

I really like this game with 2. I went along with all the talk years ago that stated it was basically a 5 player game and to play with any other number wasn't as good an experience.

Just last year I tried it with 3 and was surprised that I liked it better than my plays with 4 or 5. So I tried it with 2 and was amazed at how well it held up. Sure, you can use the same strategies amd tactics as in a 5 plyaer affair but I call that a good thing. There's actually much more control with fewer pkayers.

In general I find that games tend to be more "fun" in a social sense with more people (to a point, as are most social getherings) but the game experience itself is usually better with fewer players.

When I want to experience the challenge of gaming I'll play with 2 or 3. When I want to just have fun with chums I'll play with 4 or 5.

In reality, this game is a lot of luck-pushing fun with 5 players (and maybe 4), but is a complete waste of time with 2 or 3.

I actually still really like this with 2-3 players. Sure, it's better with 4 or 5, but it still works with less. It's almost filler like with 2 and plays in 20-30 minutes. I think the first 7-8 times I played Beowulf it was just with 2 players.

Another new release from Hans im Glück that came out at the same time as Thurn & Taxis.

This plays really well from 2-4 players, and so far plays pretty differently every time as well.

I keep plugging this whenever I can, in an effort to get it a bit more attention!

Real Masonry wouldn't likely be a compeling game theme:

Designer: Okay, the purpose of the game is to live a honest, moral life.
Player: Okay, but how do I backstab my opponent?
D: No, that's Diplomacy. Actually, you're supposed to help your opponents become better people.
P: So that's so we can defeat the evil guys? Do we have special powers?
D: No, that's Shadows over Camelot. Instead, you'll get to spend time becoming a better man through memorization of Shakespearean text and baking fund raisers for your community.
P: Stuff that Poindexter; it sounds too much like work!
D: Folks just weren't like that in my day. We used to wear an onion on our belts, because that was the style at the time (insert personal favourite Grandpa Simpson quote)..

*Sigh* One day we'll be cool again, one day we'll be cool again... Meanwhile, can we play SJG Illuminati again?

Galaxy: the Dark Ages is labelled for 2-5 players. However, two player games tend to turn lopsided rather quickly once one player controls the Myrmidons.

The Myrmidon power allows its governor to randomly toss half an opponent's cards from the victim's hand to the victim's reserve. During part of the playtest phase, there was an extra constraint on the Myrmidon power: "The victim may not already have half (fractions rounded up) or more of their cards in the Reserve."

With this constraint, a player beaten down by the Myrmidon power could maintain a viable hand. Without it, the two player game quickly devolves into one player limping by on drawn cards while the other takes control of the game.

I don't know if the constraint was deliberately dropped or simply fell victim to rules configuration management glitches. But for two player games, I'd call it a necessary addition.

It says 3-6 on the box but it does contain rules for 2 players (much like Keythedral does). Unfortunately the 2 player variant as usual - is a load of crap with players having to choose the best possible move for the dummy players. I don't particularly mind dummy players in games as such but if I recall correctly in a 2 player game of Vinci each player must control 1 dummy player. Not fun! But then again this game isn't all that fun to begin with .

I really enjoy this with 4 players, but with 2 it's very boring. You don't see enough cards to do anything really interesting and the "Hunt" cards are mostly useless since it's unlikely your opponent will play a demon card at the same time as you. Again, not broken, just not much fun.

I find much of the satisfaction in this comes from making useful sets. With 2 you barely see 1/3 of the deck, meaning it's almost pointless to play cards that require a rare card. And since your opponent can keep perfect tabs on what you're choosing, it won't matter if that perfect card ever comes up anyway, unless you happen to be dealt it before the draft starts.

With more you're more likely to get the agonizing decions of do I pick something to help me or hurt another player? Do I leave it to someone else and hope/force that they hurt the other player for me? There's just so many more choices when you add in that 3rd, or even better, 4th player.

It's fast and quick with 2, but it's just a contest to see who can pick the highest cards out, with little mystery of what the other player is going to play or has choosen.

Not broken for sure, but just not nearly as much fun for me.

fantastic with 2!
i'm fascinated about the different strategies depending on the number of players. i like it with 4, love it with 3 and with 2 - see above. you can make a lot of decisions and use all the benefits the cards have more than ones or twice. finally you can try long term strategies. there is no absolute, ideal winner strategy and a misstress in the first or second round for you opponent is paid high, so you can build up a very flexible team of people and buildings - you have a real chance to win. (but you may win with the mistress too).
i have to say it again: one of the perfect multi-player 2- player games.

Many many times I've played this game with 2 players. It works best when you randomly distribute the cards to 3 players. The third player's lands with be filled with 2 neutral players. The opposite player rolls defense.

I've also played where each person gets half of the third players' armies and puts them out on the board wherever they want. This usually doesn't work out so well and make userless impenetrable walls in the game.

I agree with the above posting--"intimate" Diplomacy is an excellent game. Each player controlls one power and gets a certain amount of "money" at the start of the game. Each year, players secretly spend a portion of their money to control the actions of one 'neutral' power for one year (essentially you buy a country's armies and fleets for a year). Each winter, in addition to normal builds/disbands, you also earn "income" based on the number of SCs you control. Intimate is a great (possibly the best) variant in Diplomacy--wish more people knew about and/or played it.

Also, though not OFFICIALLY 2 player, Ra works very well as a two player game with only minor adjustments...honestly, I think it could be sold as a 2-5 player game.

Another issue raised by this list is 2 player games that can be played with more...the reverse of the situation raised here. I think Lost Cities is a good example--with two decks the game plays well in 2 teams of 2, though this 4 player variant does require purchasing an additional game.

One thing to note is that sometimes a 2 player game of X disappoints because it's markedly different to a multiplayer game of X and what's changed is what you liked about X. But if you forget it's a game of X, but just consider it as a 2 player game to compare against other 2 player games, it can look better.
