I often like to use the custom games played query here on BGG to compare which games are played one week vs. which games are played the next week. This is particularly interesting for weeks where a large convention takes place (e.g. WBC or One Which Shall Remain Nameless). Well, given that a particular convention has just ended, I decided to see if the games played there (by game geeks, many of whom log their games here on BGG) would make a significant difference in the list of games most played.
Comparing the Friday-through-second-Sunday time periods of March 24-April 2 against April 7-16, we do see that games mentioned frequently in the "What I Played at The Gathering" lists do appear at the top of the list. Listed below are a smattering of games, with their number of players and sessions last week vs. this week.
Example: Ticket to Ride - Märklin_ lw:28/42(64) tw:98/151(5) indicates that during the pre-Gathering period (lw), it was played by 28 different people a total of 42 times and ranked 64th of all games tallied during that period. This past week (tw), it was played by 98 different people 151 times and ranked #5 in the overall list.

So, here's the Movers and Shakers Top 10 (based on a super-scientific formula that only Chaddyboy 2000 would appreciate).
#1: Ticket to Ride - Märklin_ lw:28/42(64) tw:98/151(5) #2: Thurn und Taxis__________ lw:21/35(87) tw:59/153(18) #3: Maus nach Haus___________ lw:-/-(unr) tw:9/28(209) #4: Times Square_____________ lw:-/-(unr) tw:8/17(226) #5: You Must Be an Idiot!____ lw:-/-(unr) tw:9/12(218) #6: Hart an der Grenze_______ lw:2/2(761) tw:12/13(161) #7: Eiertanz_________________ lw:-/-(unr) tw:7/19(250) #8: Scarab Lords_____________ lw:-/-(unr) tw:6/23(278) #9: Mission : Planète Rouge__ lw:2/2(761) tw:10/14(193) #10: Carcassonne - The Tower__ lw:-/-(unr) tw:8/8(245)
I think that list looks a lot like a snapshot of reported Gathering activity. Well, all except for Scarab Lords and Carc-the Tower. Note how many unranked games lept to the upper echelons of the list. Caveat: I considered any game with fewer than 2 players to be "unranked," just because the list of games with only 1 play is way too long to work with.

Still looking very Gathering-esque. Games come from out of nowhere to hit the tables. That Alea Augsburg pre-production game became the 256th most played game over the 11-day period, for cryin' out loud.

Yep. Ol' Loopin' Louie makes his yearly presence known due to one rowdy tournament in the middle of the night. The others on this list are a bit tougher to explain.

I would be remiss if I didn't bring up this entry:
#138: Unpublished Prototype____ lw:34/46(45) tw:39/102(36)
Lookie there, ma! People are apparently always playing prototypes (it's amazing to me that in a typical week, 30+ people play prototypes), but during the past week, those 30ish people were playing them multiple times.

Pegging in at #32, I spy: Subbuteo_________________ lw:-/-(unr) tw:4/8(390). Now, I know that a Subbuteo field was set up pretty much all week, and that seems to have had some effect on the Most Frequently Played Games listing here at BGG. But if a game needs 10 days of constant setup to rise to #390, it might not justify the table space.

#370: Werewolf_________________ lw:24/69(72) tw:25/94(61)
This is intriguing. We see an increase of only one extra player between the two weeks, which isn't significant. But the number of sessions went from 69 (not quite 3 per player) to 94 (almost 4 per player). I guess that devotees of that particular game had a chance to revel in its glory multiple times last week.

Further down (but still gaining quite a bit), I see some more that got a lot of run (Mauer Bauer, in particular) plus one that had a little spike, and even an older game getting a little love.

Were there games that neither gained nor lost table time during the week? Well, of course there were. Here's some middle of the pack entries (starting at #505):

And what games suffered a little due to the Columbus Gaming Nexxus?
#785: Tower of Babel___________ lw:25/31(70) tw:18/24(103) #808: Betrayal at House on the_ lw:34/50(44) tw:27/38(59) #838: Royal Turf_______________ lw:16/23(126) tw:10/14(193) #881: Arkham Horror____________ lw:33/37(49) tw:21/26(84) #911: Ticket to Ride___________ lw:125/185(2) tw:102/182(3) #915: Shadows over Camelot_____ lw:65/106(17) tw:53/80(22) #922: Caylus___________________ lw:179/290(1) tw:170/254(1) #976: Chicken Cha Cha Cha______ lw:7/11(274) tw:3/5(485) #983: Citadels_________________ lw:64/81(18) tw:47/55(27)
It's hard to say that Caylus or TTR or Shadows over Camelot truly suffered, as they all are still high on the list of Most Games Played. But their numbers did dip somewhat. I'm guessing that geek gamers who ran off to Ohio weren't playing the "gateway" games with their not-so-intensely-geeky buddies back home, hence games like Citadels and Royal Turf and BaHotH falling a little. And they were removed from their budding gamer geek children, so they didn't have to play Chicken Cha Cha Cha every night before bedtime.

And games that suffered a bit more...
#1040: Cmd & Colors: Ancients___ lw:51/112(29) tw:33/74(41) #1057: Acquire__________________ lw:39/44(36) tw:14/31(131) #1071: Beowulf - The Legend_____ lw:25/30(71) tw:8/10(239) #1079: Sieben Siegel, die_______ lw:10/14(197) tw:3/3(532) #1087: Friedrich________________ lw:7/9(283) tw:2/2(699) #1097: Ticket to Ride Europe____ lw:96/163(7) tw:61/124(17)
Now, I can see TTR-Europe (along with TTR above) losing a little ground, given that the new edition, Marklin, was everpresent. Why Acquire would fade is a mystery to me. And I did see C&C Ancients sitting around, mostly unplayed. Don't know what that says about that particular game.

And the bottom 5...
Vinci____________________ lw:20/23(95) tw:3/3(532) Scotland Yard____________ lw:8/14(241) tw:-/-(unr) Quo Vadis?_______________ lw:11/11(185) tw:-/-(unr) Connect Four_____________ lw:6/56(303) tw:-/-(unr) Cosmic Encounter_________ lw:18/23(110) tw:2/2(699)
I can see Cosmic Encounter fading during the week when the newest of the new are on parade. For that matter, all of these games aren't exactly spring chicks. But you'd expect something like Quo Vadis to get a go or two, wouldn't you? But that's the whole thing about gamer geeks. They adore the newest and shiniest game during the Debutante Ball, and after the newness wears off, they go back to the tried & true. Sort of like the Velvetine Rabbit. Look for games like Scotland Yard, Ticket to Ride Europe, and Acqurie to regain their rightful positions soon.
