My job occasionally sends me on international trips. I love it when I do, even though it usually means being away from family and friends, jet lag, terrible sleep in hotel beds, chunks of loneliness and usually very long days of work.

So why do I love it? Well, along with hopefully being treated to business class travel and being able to eat and drink on the company, I have gotten into the habit of seeking out people to game with.

This time I was sent to Florida. You can read about previous "gaming with strangers in strange countries" here:
Blame Canada! A Gaming Weekend for a Brit in Toronto
Budapest - A Weekend Break With BGG Assistance
I've also done the same in Sydney, but didn't get around to writing it up.

So, off to the land of Miami Vice and Dexter. Would I survive?

I flew Virgin Upper Class. My company didn't really want me to as it costs silly money, but their policy is that if the flight time is over a certain amount then you travel Business Class and Virgin was the company prefered airline on that trip. This flight was over 9 hours. So no way am I going to sacrifice my comfort to save them money!

Virgin Upper Class is awesome. You just do not want to get off the plane. On the way out I watched 4 movies plus the first episode of A Game of Thrones, drank way too much (free!) premium alcohol (champagne, bucks fizz, bloody mary, fabulous wine, port and beer), ate too much lovely food and did not even try to sleep. Sleep in business class is just a wasted opportunity.

Airline Security is no joke nowadays and getting into the US as an "alien" is about as tough as it gets. Luckily I don't have a moustache and a turban. This time it was fairly straightforward - once I'd been photographed, finger-printed, body-scanned, DNA sampled and anal probed that is.

Actually being drunk either smoothed my way through, or at least made it feel like it was smooth.

It also helped not ticking the "I am a terrorist" box on the entry form.

My business class flight included a limo ride from the airport to my hotel. This was good for a number of reasons:
1. I had no clue where I was or where I was going
2. I was at that stage of drunk where you don't know how drunk you are
3. It was a long way

I was staying in Weston for my first 5 days. For those of you who don't know where that is (over 99.9% of you), it is possibly the least sexy part of Florida. It is directly NW of Miami, or West of Fort Lauderdale. It is as far West as you can go without getting into one of those boats with a giant fan on the back and start looking for alligators.

Once my trip was confirmed I'd taken to BGG straight away in the hope that I could get along to some gaming sessions.
The five Florida guilds were pretty dead.
I posted in the nearest regional forum (SouthEast US) and got a fantastic reply less than 2 hours later from Kevin B Smith with a lot of ideas. Mainly he directed me to Meetup.com where there are a lot of gaming groups in the Miami/Fort Lauderdale area. He also gave me directions to a number of game stores including the legendary Cool Stuff Inc. And pointed out that there was a chance of gaming with Tom Vasel.

But that was it. No-one else replied for four days. I was kind of hoping for a bit more of a welcome. Kevin and I then had a bit of a chat on the thread and then a couple of other guys posted too. You can see the thread here:

And also an even less successful Chit Chat thread here:

So I checked out Meetup. It was a website I'd never even known existed before.
There were a lot of Miami area game groups. And a lot of meetings. And then the 10 days that I would be around there was a void of gaming meetups. Apart from ones that were fairly long drives.
That was a problem. I'm not an overly confident driver at home. Add in a rental car with the steering wheel on the wrong side of it, driving in a strange city on the wrong side of the road, with jetlag and I have an issue.

It also doesn't help that this is a area full of drug dealers, maverick cops, serial killers and serial killers who kill serial killers. Or do I watch too much TV?

Lots of games are cheaper in the US than in the UK. A lot of games cost the same amount in dollars in the US as they cost in pounds in the UK.
In reality this can mean they can be 40-50% cheaper. Due to incredibly high International shipping costs from the US plus the risk of having customs charges imposed on entry to the UK these games are tantalisingly priced, but completely out of reach.

But not when I'm going there! I took a long time to think of the games that I wanted to order and get shipped to my hotel in advance of my trip! In the end I chose TimeWellSpent as the company that had the best prices for the games I wanted. I went for:

C&C Napoleonics
Cyclades
Dungeon Petz
Risk Legacy
Ninja vs Ninja

I would have to smuggle them back through customs into the UK.

Well, it doesn't look very incredible from the outside:

Inside it is much more awesome (this shows about half the shop):

The game would be hugely improved for me if it had little figurines of fighters, wizards, clerics and rogues instead of just different coloured cubes.

Here are the guys I played with, from left to right: Kevin, Alex/Alejandro (ameto), me, Bjorn, and Robert (rfeldster)

My days had been overfilled with long days at work and I'd had four terrible nights sleep due to waking up at 3am and being in a hotel bed. There was no way I was up for a long drive to a games night and back.

Instead I went for Mexican food, beer and tequila.

I'd brought Friday along with me along with a couple of other solo games and a few card games in case I found some people to game with in the hotels. I needn't have bothered really. I got my first (and only so far) game of Friday in, but none of the other games got played.

My other reason for using this game is that on Friday I moved from Weston to the beach at Fort Lauderdale, hoping to spend the weekend doing some fun stuff.
I moved into the Hilton Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort. Here is the view from my room:

I was pretty tired, so after a long day at work, moving hotels and an hour's drive I didn't have the energy to go out to eat, so ate in the hotel bar.
I got there in time for happy hour, drank a couple of Coronas, had some lovely seafood and got into conversation with some other guys, including one who claimed he was a Ferrari salesman.
Overall it was an enjoyable evening even if it did end with me drinking a very large and very strong bourbon. I went to bed soon after.

I woke early, so no change there, and very much regretted drinking that bourbon.
Down to breakfast and I find that a storm has arrived to spoil my weekend plans. The hotel pool is on a patio on the 6th floor, viewable from the restaurant area. It looks like there is a very strong wave machine operating in it! The wind is incredibly strong. Hmmm, not a day for the beach then! After breakfast I go and talk to the hotel concierge to see if there is any chance of going scuba diving tomorrow. "Only if the wind drops" is the response from nearby dive shops.

Luckily I have other plans for today (Saturday). I go shopping for presents for my wife and kids and then head off to a gaming day! Woo-hoo!

Everyone finished at pretty much the same time and there was the usual complex discussion about what games we wanted to play next and who wanted to play them. Kevin offered up Caylus Magna Carta which he said played a lot like Lords of Waterdeep. Since I own CMC and haven't played it I was keen to give it a shot. I had some nervousness as the "full game" Caylus is one of the few boardgames that I cannot cope with because of the potential for complete brain meltdown.

Here is us playing CMC, left to right, me, Kevin, Bennett.

It was still a brain-burner, but not to Caylus levels. I would play it again, but I don't feel a giant urge to do so.

While we played Caylus the other guys took on Age of Empires, left to right: Luke, Erel, Henry, Robert, and Brad

We finished CMC and the other guys were still deep in Age of Empires (with one of them really not happy about that), so we agreed that I would teach the other two guys how to play Stone Age. It was quite a fun game and different in that one of them tactically accelerated it to a quick end.

By the time we'd finished the other guys also finished Age of Empires and some people had to go home, so we merged into a single group of six and played King of Tokyo which was a blast.
I won the first game in style after carpet bombing all the other monsters to death! Of course in the second game I was the first dead monster....

While these games were going on there were a steadily increasing number of Magic players (though it could have been other CCGs) in the place. They were definately a younger crowd than us as boardgamers, but for the number of them were not particularly offensive!

After the second King of Tokyo game finished I was pretty tired so headed back to the hotel. Before I left Kevin offered to sell me his copy of Lords of Waterdeep and I happily took him up on the offer. Hmmm, that is a lot of games to fit in my luggage....

Tuesday night was my last night in the US. On Wednesday I had to check out of the hotel, take back my rental car and do half a day at work before heading to the airport.

So after a night involving giant frozen margaritas you can guess how my packing went. I had to fit 7 games, plus lots of gifts and a new ipad into my luggage, that was already pretty full of clothes, games I'd brought with me, work stuff and work laptop. Joy.

Luckily I had the clever idea to pack while drunk. So I could make the huge mental step to throw away some of the game inserts. It really is incredible how little there is in the boxes of 51st State and Ninja vs Ninja.

It was a night flight home and the next morning in a somewhat dazed state I made my way through customs without having my imported hoard inspected, so avoiding a potentially lethal import taxes. Phew!

A big thanks to all those I gamed with, and especially to Kevin!
