Spiel, held in the town of Essen each October, is one of Germany's two major game conventions, the other being the Nürnberg International Toy Fair in February. While Nürnberg is a trade show – and therefore strictly business – Spiel is open to the public, drawing roughly 150,000 people over four days. Hundreds of new games will be introduced at Spiel 2012, which takes place October 18-21. This preview covers games that publishers plan to release at Spiel or in the months leading up to it. In most cases, these games will be new for most Spiel attendees. Some smaller publishers show all titles released since Spiel 2011.

Details about the Spiel 2012 Preview:

-----• This Preview is organized alphabetically by publisher, with games ordered alphabetically under a publisher's heading. Click on a game's name to head to its dedicated page to see more images, read the forums, and so on.

-----• If a game appears in multiple versions, typically due to it being released in multiple languages, each version will appear under its own publisher.

-----• This information is pulled directly from the game pages in the BGG database. Thus, as those pages are updated, this GeekList will be updated, too. Yay, automation!

-----• If you subscribe to this Preview, you'll receive update notices whenever an item is added or edited.

-----• If you don't care to read about a game and are logged in, click the red X to hide the game listing for both now and future visits. Choose "Personal" for the reason when doing so. You cannot hide a publisher due to this Preview's special set-up.

-----• Publisher booth numbers, preorder information, game designer and artist signings, and more will be added once that info comes available.

-----• As he did in 2011, Peter Feigl has once again created an Android app for use at the Spiel game convention in Essen, Germany that makes use of the information on this preview. You can download the app from this link, and Feigl is answering user questions and posting updates in this BGG thread. (He notes that you can also email him – craven AT gmx.net – with questions or problems.)

Note that this information has been cobbled together from dozens, nay, hundreds of sources, so inaccuracies may have crept in despite my best efforts. I will update game pages as I receive additional information, and your fellow BGG users will undoubtedly do the same, thereby keeping this Preview as up-to-date as the BGG database itself.

If you're a designer or publisher with information to share – or you have details about an upcoming Spiel 2012 release – please send me email (wericmartin @ gmail.com). I'll respond as best I can given the tidal wave of data flowing through the game world in anticipation of the most exciting game convention in the world: Spiel!

Description:

You are the mayor of one borough of Small City, and you have eight turns to secure enough votes to be re-elected. To do this, you have to attract more citizens, encourage the growth of residential areas for them to live in, and aid the expansion of both the commercial and industrial sectors – though the latter sector also brings pollution with it, and you need to deal with that, too, as high pollution levels will have a negative effect on your score at the end of the game.

If you build suitable infrastructure, your citizens will undoubtedly vote for your re-election, but beware of false promises! Votes can be earned over the course of the game by placing citizens in the residential spaces, by erecting cultural buildings, by keeping commercial buildings in suitable areas, and also by making good on the promises that you made to the citizens at the beginning of the game.

The player with the most votes (i.e., victory points) after eight turns wins.

Other Information: • Designer Alban Viard has stated that he'll have a prototype of Small City – the third title in his "Small City" trilogy – on hand at Spiel 2012 ahead of its 2013 release. Look for Viard in the Ludibay booth (4-411) following his brief appearance at the Winsome stand (10-66) early on Thursday morning.

Game description from the publisher:

"You can make a profit in several ways – either by producing goods yourself or investing in other players' activities. But which method is more efficient – should you depend mainly on your own wisdom or would you prefer the way of passive investing? Answer can be found from Making Profit: The Boardgame. 2-6 players. Money. Stock. Production. Everything depends on you!"

In Making Profit: The Boardgame every player is both factory manager and investor at the same time. As factory manager you have to decide: should you run the factory for profits or develop it instead... and what area to develop: resource or products? As investor you have to choose the factories to invest into; should you stick close to your own plant or are there more lucrative options made available by opponents? But there are so few actions available each turn...and at the end the winner is the one with most combined wealth.

Description:

Fremde Federn, which means roughly "to adorn oneself with borrowed plumes," or something like "strange feathers."

Fremde Federn is about borrowing elements from well-known games (Eurogames) and constructing a new game out of them. For now, it is a deck-building, worker-placement, drafting race game. The print-and-play files – German only for now – are available on the 2F-Spiele website.

You are a politician who tries to gather enough money and influence to become the next president. Of course, you depend on the work of others to get the needed influence. You start with a set of 10 cards (7 of them are "fatherly friends," which give you 1 money each and 3 of them yield 1 influence each (VPs)). Each round you draw 5 cards from your deck and use one card for the turn order to place your workers. The workers go to the different offices in the government building to buy new cards for you, get influence or to carry out other actions. Each round there is one more space in which you can choose to place your workers. On the game board is a row of cards which you can choose to buy and each round the empty places in this row are filled from a deck of cards divided into 4 different "Ages." The last cards of the deck are Doctoral degrees which you can buy with your money; these give you 1 VP for each unit of money spent. The game ends when all of the Doctoral degrees are bought or when one player has 95 VPs or more.

Description:

Power Grid: Northern Europe/United Kingdom & Ireland is a pair of expansions for Power Grid that includes twelve new power plant cards exclusive for Northern Europe!

Northern Europe: The seven countries in Northern Europe use very different energy sources for their electricity production. Depending on which regions are chosen the players will be confronted with a changed set of power plants.

United Kingdom & Ireland: The players can operate two different networks on these two isles. With no direct connection between Ireland and Great Britain, starting the second network costs the player dearly. Additionally, this region changed from a resource exporter to an importer in a very short time, so »Step 3« starts earlier when playing on this map.

Description:

The two maps included in Power Grid: Québec & Baden-Württemberg were previously released in two separate Power Grid base games: Québec is part of Mégawatts, the French edition of the game released by Filosofia, while Baden-Württemberg was included in Funkenschlag: EnBW, a German edition of the game from EnBW.

In Québec, the Canadian province Québec places great emphasis on energy production via ecological hydro power plants. Once an ecological power plant has been added to the power plant market, it will remain until purchased by a player or removed when the number on it is lower than the number of cities power by any player. The two cities of Montreal and Québec City offer several cheap connections, making this map challenging with several layers of decisions for building the best networks.

In Baden-Württemberg, the clocks move differently: The main change focuses on the order of phases of a game round. First, you buy power plants, then you rearrange the player order. Furthermore, as this province is small, several transregional locations may be connected only starting in »step 2«.

Only a single printing of Power Grid: Québec & Baden-Württemberg will be produced, although the Québec map will remain available in Mégawatts.

Description:

Ruthenia: The Boardgame

The Hunnic empire has fallen and old empires are returning to power in the Mediterranean. Hordes of Nomads continue to invade Europe through the eastern steppe. They cross the rivers Rha, Tanais and Danapris to enter the lands of the Eastern Roman Empire, known as Byzantium. The settlers of the Slavic tribes are moving south from the northern forests and swamps. They will soon inhabit Eastern Europe and the Balkans.

Three young states have emerged: the Bulgarian Khanate, the Khazar Khaganate and Kievan Rus. They will struggle against each other and against the powerful Eastern Roman Empire for the right to exist and dominate the region.

Ruthenia is a classic two-level historical strategy game set in Eastern Europe in the 8th to 10th centuries.

You lead one of four states building fortresses, markets and temples, using fleets to trade, rob and transport troops, conquering new territories, commanding armies and conducting high politics.

In each battle, you lead your army personally. Cards are used to represent the soldiers lined up in medieval combat. Your army has four basic troop types – line infantry, heavy infantry, light cavalry and heavy cavalry – as well as support troops such as archers, garrisons and sailors. You can enhance the performance of your forces through the play of military action cards.

Rules govern the movement of non-player factions, including tribes and hordes as well as the states not taken by players.

Ruthenia includes: 1 Game Board (46.5 x 52.5 cm), 20 Army Counters, 228 Round Cardboard Tokens, 296 Cards, 4 Dice, 5 Summary Sheets, a Strategy Book and a Battle Book.

Other Information: • Price €50

• Designer Denys Lonshakov has noted on BGG that an "English edition of game is coming in a limited amount" to Spiel 2012. More specifically, that edition will consist of 50-100 copies, and if you're interested in the game, you can preorder or reserve a copy with the deadline for such orders being September 23, 2012.

Description:

Airlines Europe: The Presidents, a promotional item that debuted at Spiel 2012, lets players bluff a bit more in Airlines Europe as to which airlines they most want to back with their stock.

At the start of the game, each player is dealt two random president tokens from the ten available, with each token matching one of the ten airlines in the game. The players look at these tokens in secret and keep them hidden until they choose to reveal them.

During a payout round, when players score points based on the stock they hold in a particular airline, if a player is tied with one or more opponents in a stock for which he holds the president token, that player can choose to reveal the token, breaking the tie in his favor. Any opponent(s) tied with this player are bumped down to the next payout level for this airline. The token remains face-up until the end of the game and comes into play in each subsequent payout, if needed.

An unrevealed president token is worth one point at the end of the game.

Description:

Hanabi—named for the Japanese word for "fireworks"—is a cooperative game in which players try to create the perfect fireworks show by placing the cards on the table in the right order. (In Japanese, hanabi is written as 花火; these are the ideograms flower and fire, respectively.)

The card deck consists of five different colors of cards, numbered 1–5 in each color. For each color, the players try to place a row in the correct order from 1–5. Sounds easy, right? Well, not quite, as in this game you hold your cards so that they're visible only to other players. To assist other players in playing a card, you must give them hints regarding the numbers or the colors of their cards. Players must act as a team to avoid errors and to finish the fireworks display before they run out of cards.

An extra suit of cards, rainbow colored, is also provided for advanced or variant play.

Hanabi was originally published as part of Hanabi & Ikebana.

Other Information: • Price €7.50

• The ABACUSSPIELE version of Hanabi includes ten multicolored cards to allow for play of Avalanche of Colors and another variant that is new, in addition to the base game.

Description:

Monuments: Ewiger Ruhm ("Eternal Glory"), a promotional item given away at Spiel 2012, consists of a short scoretrack counting from 1-14, and four tokens in each color, with a set of tokens showing a helment, a ship, a scroll, and a monument. Whenever a player builds or expands a monument, he uses these tokens to track the highest levels of his holdings in these four categories. If, for example, his first monument is of five cards with three ships and two helments, he'd place the monument token on five, the ship token on three, and the helmet token on two. The scoretrack always reflects the highest value you have reached ever in a game, so your token does not go down when your monuments degenerate.

In each category the player with the highest token gets additional victory points at the end of the game. In case of a tie the one is better, who has reached the highest level first. The runner-up gets a smaller reward.

A more comfortable scoring track and complete english rules will be available on the website www.ostia-spiele.de during the Essen Fair.

Description:

Zooloretto: The Chameleon – first released as part of Zooloretto News No. 3 in 2010, then later available as a promotional item at Spiel 2012 – is a mini-expansion for Zooloretto Exotic, which is itself an expansion for Zooloretto.

Zooloretto: The Chameleon consists of two chameleon tiles, which are mixed into the stack of animal tiles. The chameleons are jungle animals, and when taken on a trolley back to a player's zoo must be placed on an empty space in the jungle board – adhering to the individual limit of having no more than three types of jungle animals on the jungle board – or placed in that player's barn. When a player adds the chameleon to his zoo, not only does he advance a visitor of the color of his choice, but he can also swap a visitor to his zoo with a visitor from the stock of any other color.

Like all other animals on the jungle board, the chameleon is worth zero points.

Description:

Zooloretto: Goodie-Box consists of five mini-expansions for Zooloretto or Aquaretto, with four of the expansions appearing previously in Zooloretto/Aquaretto expansion packs published by Rio Grande Games, but not published in Germany. The expansions are:

  • Zooloretto
    • The Familiarisation Area – The familiarisation area fits around the zoo board. It has space for 1 animal tile that can be put there for free. This tile doesn't score any points at the end of the game, neither plus nor minus points. During the game this tile can be moved into the zoo for free or you can trade for an animal in another familiarisation area for 1 coin. So basically this is a temporary "storage" for animals.
    • The Petting Zoo – Each player receives a petting zoo and can place up to two baby animals in this space, receiving one coin for the first animal and two for the second. These animals cannot be moved and generate no points.
  • Aquaretto
    • The Trains – Eighteen train tiles, showing trains in one of four colors or a curved track, are mixed with the other tiles. When you take a train tile, you place it in an empty space in your zoo. Each subsequent train tile must connect to existing ones. Each type of train tile is worth two points at game's end.
    • Three Coworker Tiles – These tiles are placed in the center of the table and can be claimed when a player gets coworkers. Each tile is different and cannot be used by other players once claimed.
  • Either game
    • The Savings Book – Each player receives a savings book that depicts the numbers 1-4. Instead of a normal action, the player can place a coin on 1 in his savings book. At the end of a round, a coin in the savings book advances one space, returning to the player – along with an extra coin – when it reaches 4.

Description:

One night on the outskirts of the towering magic mountains the shadow of a dragon appears. Now everything is in turmoil, and people are going to search in the depths of the mountain range for its hiding place. This task won't be easy, however, as without the proper items from the village you'll have no chance of defeating the creatures waiting to be found in the dungeon. Take too long to collect the sword, shield and dragon antivenom required, though, as others might have already found the magic items or treasure of the dragon by then.

In DrachenSchatten, everyone is in the village and the dungeon looking for different objects, treasures and creatures, and they'll need to perform the action or function of the different items so they can reach their goal without being defeated by dragons and hydras along the way.

Chaos on the rails! In Höchste Eisenbahn, players need to match train cars as quickly as possible, taking care to link up cars that are the same type, are the same color, or have the same number of wheels. That shouldn't be a problem, right? But what if everyone is searching for train cars at the same time? Whoever puts together the longest train will win and move to the station in victory – just be sure that you collect a locomotive that matches your train as soon as possible!

Höchste Eisenbahn can be played at different difficulty levels so that newcomers and train masters can compete together. The game also includes variant rules to allow children as young as three to play.

Description:

Despite sounding like a dice game, Like Dice is a card game that uses no dice. Instead, most of the cards depict two dice of different colors on them; some of these cards will be placed in the center of the table, and others will lie in front of the players.

Task cards will challenge players to find or name the largest red die and the smallest green, or say how many 5s are in play, or total the number of pips showing on blue dice. Whoever calls out the right solution gets a reward – but those who do score will have more dice to count, which might make it tougher for them to get to the solution first in later rounds...

Like Dice includes a variant that allows children as young as six to play.

Board Game Publisher: Albe Pavo
• As noted elsewhere on BGG, all Albe Pavo titles (including Munera and Sake & Samurai) will be located in the Heidelberger Spieleverlag booth at Spiel 2012.

Winter Tales is a co-production of Albe Pavo and Raven Distribution, and due to the involved intestinal underpinnings of the Spiel 2012 Preview, sometimes when I add a game to the list, it's listed under the publisher which I would rather it not be listed under. Thus, I suggest if you want to know more about this game, head to its listing elsewhere in this massive compilation.

Description:

A few viking warriors sit at a table in smoky long hall, talking and bragging about war axes, women and pillages. Beer flows freely, but not even the cellars of Byggvir, the God of Beer, could quench the thirst of Nordland's greatest warriors. Servants run for cover, knowing full well where all this is going. Suddenly an eerie silence fills the common room. On the table, only one full cup remains. Who will get the last drink? Not a single step back is allowed to the warrior who wishes to enter Valhalla. One single thought in everyone's mind: may Fenrir eat the sun, that beer will be mine! All vikings laugh at the thought of death, draw their war axes, joining the fight at the call of "OOOODIIIIIIIIIIN!"

In Beer & Vikings you are a fierce and thirsty viking warrior, willing to do anything to get the last cup of beer. The winner is the most drunk viking – in game terms, the player who has collected the most beer drink counters – at the end of the sudden death round.

Be wary, though, for drinking too much will dull your wits and mastery with the war axe. Each drink of beer prevents you from using one of your resources, be it a weapon, an item, or even your personal skill! You must always be wary not to drink too much or you risk becoming a defenseless sot in the hands of your enemies. On the other hand, you will be able to burn up some of the beer you have drunk to obtain significant bonuses which may well save your life. Show yourself as the wise warrior you are and balance your strategy with care, not burning up too much beer, thus finding yourself in the rear at the end of the game, when the cup is empty and the sudden death round begins. Those who will succumb to their enemies' blows won't be eliminated from the game, but will become Spirits of Loki, the thirsty god of evil, and team up with the other Spirits to attack the living, aiming to steal their beer. Raise your glasses (and your axes)!

Beer & Vikings introduces 112 brand new cards! including a new type of cards called "Valhalla" which provide you a strong ability during the match – but to obtain them you need to kill an opponent. Thus, to gain this power you must generate a vengeful spirit first. Be careful when you follow the Valhalla way...

Beer & Vikings, a board game for 3-8 players about war axes, blood and beer, is both a standalone game and an expansion for Sake & Samurai.

Description:

Following the victory in the Conflict of Autumn, The Regime of Winter has clutched the Land of Fairy Tales in its cold grasp. Fuelled by hate and fear, Winter aims at extinguishing the flame of Love and the light of Hope under a blanket of snow and the never-ending chill of a winter night. In the winding alleys and the small houses desperately clinging to the hillside of Wintertown, frightened Tales move in the shadows, knowing they cannot allow all Hope for the future to be snuffed out by the cold and ready to fight to drive Winter away and let Spring come again.

In Winter Tales, a storytelling board game, players tell the tale of the conflict between the characters of fairy tales, who represent all that is good and hopeful, and the Soldiers of Winter, who incarnate evil and the fierce cold of Winter. Players will ally themselves with one of the warring Factions, controlling characters and fighting for the comeback of Spring or the suffocation of all hope, bringing on an endless Winter.

Winter Tales is an ever-changing game as each time the players will tell a completely different story, creating a shared plot.

Description:

The social elite of Tempest live in a world of power, intrigue, and alliances that can often shake the very foundations of the city's society. In Courtier, you move within these circles of social power to further your goals. Work with established courtiers to gain influence and stymie the rise of your rivals as you attempt to earn or cheat your way into their world.

In Courtier, 2–4 players compete for recognition in the royal court. Your mission is to act as an influence broker, manipulating the levers of power and granting favors to important supplicants. You accomplish this by influencing key people to act at your behest.

Play influence cards to gain sway over a key courtier, or play power cards to manipulate the board in your favor. Control each of the courtiers listed on a given petition, and you earn victory points for completing that request. Bonus points can be earned from cards and abilities. The winner is the player with the highest score at the end of the game.

Description:

The City-State of Tempest is a lively metropolis – some say the largest in the world – yet behind the city's cultured exterior, age-old cabals vie for power, fighting one another for dominance in a society ripe with political and economic turmoil. Led by shadowy figures who command a small cadre of loyal followers, these secret societies work in concert to seize the wealth and power of the fabled City-State of Tempest.

In Dominare, you are the puppet master of a conspiracy seeking to control Tempest. Agents are the key to Dominare. Use your agents to spread your influence through the city, building a network of hidden power to control the most valuable districts and blocks.

In the game, players first draft agents they want. Then, each turn, the players reveal one additional layer of their conspiracy. Each agent is a unique person in the City-State of Tempest, with unique abilities. The higher an agent in in your conspiracy, the more powerful that agent is.

Players spread their influence in key city blocks and districts, use agent and district abilities to further their plans, and manipulate the board to their benefit. Use your agents well, and influence and power will be yours. Use them poorly, and... well, you wouldn't be the first would-be ruler to vanish into the inky waters of the city canals....

Description:

Progress! That's what these Dark Ages need, someone with a little get-up-and-go. You've been a serf in this one-pig town long enough, and it's time to shake things up. You've opened a guildhall for like-minded professionals from all over Europe to work together, build their trades, and get some economic stability.

Now if only everybody else didn't have the same idea...

Well, you'll just have to do it faster than those other guys! Gather professionals into chapters, and use their combined might to reach for victory. Collect complete color sets of professions (all five colors of Trader, for instance), which you use to buy victory points (VP). The first player to gain 20 VP on her turn wins.

In Guildhall, each profession grants you special abilities, and these abilities grow stronger the more of the set that you complete. When you cash in the set for victory points, however, you lose the ability until you can build it up again. Which professions are worth risking VP to keep?

Description:

All of the eligible young men (and many of the not-so-young) seek to woo the princess of Tempest. Unfortunately, she has locked herself in the palace, and you must rely on others to take your romantic letters to her. Will yours reach her first?

Love Letter is a game of risk, deduction, and luck for 2–4 players. Your goal is to get your love letter into Princess Annette's hands while deflecting the letters from competing suitors. From a deck with only sixteen cards, each player starts with only one card in hand; one card is removed from play. On a turn, you draw one card, and play one card, trying to expose others and knock them from the game. Powerful cards lead to early gains, but make you a target. Rely on weaker cards for too long, however, and your letter may be tossed in the fire!

Description:

A city as large and crowded as Tempest depends on the daily arrival of supplies and foodstuffs, and the wealthiest echelons of society demand the latest goods and luxuries almost as frequently. Domination of this bustling trade is the ultimate goal of every merchant house in the city.

In Mercante, you control one of these merchant houses. Deploy your trusted agents to purchase goods from arriving ships and sell them into the most profitable markets. You must also do more – from "enticing" senators to outright skulduggery – to claim your rightful place at the pinnacle of Tempest's merchant class. Do you have the business acumen and ruthlessness required to claw your way to the top?

Designed for 3–5 players, Mercante is a game of economic warfare. At the beginning of the game, each player controls one warehouse and two agents. On each turn, goods are purchased at auction and stored in the warehouse to be sold at the various markets when the time is right.

Players compete to accumulate crowns to finance their operations, and senatorial favors (victory points) to win the game. The player who accumulates the most money and favors will control all trade and profit in the City-State of Tempest!
