Since I seem to be in a minority here in finding the SdJ a very useful award (last year, for instance, introducing me to Verflixxt! / That's Life), my guesses as to the five games that will be nominated, the game I think will win, and other games I think have a reasonable chance (or are notable but which I don't believe have a chance).

Please note - the following represents only my guesses at what the SdJ jury will do based upon past behavior and the games available. There are people with more insight than I into the process who've made far different picks, so take this FWIW.

Comments and other picks most welcome.

First, my record.

I always find it most interesting to see predictions when the predictor actually provides a picture of how they've done in the past. I've mostly just guessed at winners - the nominations I've guessed at I've done even worse at - but here's the picture...

(FWIW, each guess was made before the nomination list was released - it's more fun that way...)

1998 - Elfenland (correct)
1999 - Ricochet Robot (actual winner - Tikal)
2000 - Torres (correct)
2001 - Carcassonne (correct)
2002 - I don't recall my pick, but it wasn't Villa Paletti
2003 - No pick made
2004 - Ticket To Ride (correct)
2005 - Niagara (correct)

Now, to be fair, I thought Niagara the most likely winner by the narrowest of margains...

Joe's pick for SdJ 2006

Odds of being nominated - 85%

While this is the game I think most likely to win, it's not a Elfenland / Carcassonne / Ticket To Ride year, when there's a clear favorite.

This was my favorite new game at this year's Gathering. It would make a good SdJ winner, and it has a chance with the jury because it will work well with families or non-gamers in general. The rulebook is already in six languages, so there's no language problem.

I kind of agree with this, and have told enough people that it could easily win SdJ.

And that is marketing. I believe that the game is really being marketed as a children's game. Given its simple rules, that makes it the obvious winner for the Kinderspiele des Jahre.

So...the odds of it winning SdJ have dropped a LOT in my opinion after working that out. The game has so much simpler rules than Villa Paletti that it may not even appear on the SdJ list.

Moo,
Frank

I believe that _either_ this or Thurn & Taxis will be nominated. I believe Hacienda is a shoe-in for a nomination, and there's no way the jury will pick three games from a single company.

Oh, I don't care for it at all myself. But the jury seems to like Colovini, and it strikes me as the type of game the jury seems to favor.

This won't win, because the scoring, while not complicated, is not as easy as scoring in, say, Thurn und Taxis. This isn't a family game either and the basic board is not well liked. Everyone plays on the advanced board and uses the advanced scoring. Too different scoring methods hurts the game too.

Could this be the year for Knizia? Well, no, but he's got a decent chance at another nomination. I think Aton's more likely based both upon the game and the publisher, but this game wouldn't shock me at all if nominated. While I do think a two player game might win some year, I don't see any of the potential nominees as strong enough to make this the year.

I'm surprised you give this a 30% chance of nomination. You may or may not know what the Reeperbahn is, but the name alone drops it's chances to 0% for being nominated. The Spiel des Jahres award (as you probably know) is not given to the best game of the the year, it is given to the family game of the year. Its name takes it out of "Family Game" contention.

Hmmm... yes I do know, though I hadn't thought of that. Given that Kosmos felt the title appropriate, I'm not convinced it's a 0% chance, though perhaps Aton and Hive should have better chances...

Mark my words, this is the Spiel des Jahres. It is easy to pick up, has mild confrontation (taking cards others need, trying to score bonus tiles before others), easy to score in the end game and one will dwell on which postal role to use each turn as the game progresses. One must take risks too in order to finish routes near the end. Do they go for a 6 or 7 Carriage or score a route of 4 which has a city they haven't established a postal service in yet? When should they end the game and which way is best for them to end it if they can? You don't know what tiles others have unless you made sure to have noted it when they scored the bonus tile. Finally, the kids in the family will have a fair shot at winning. That can't be said about Hacienda. Spiel des Jahres is a family game of the year award, despite what people want it to be.

I've been with you so far, but if this were nominated, it would surprise the heck out of me

As an aside which I realize is slightly snarky, I'm not quite sure what these percentages really mean. It's not like the SdJ is an experiment we can run a bunch of times and see the outcomes. We can't run an SdJ simulator and see if Oltramare is nominated 2 times out of 10. We don't even get to see a voting history (as far as I know) to establish what games had any kind of levels of support. There is only one 2006 SdJ awarded, it's done, and that's that.

So I'm not sure what a percentage chance of winning really means.

Basically, it's an out for me when I'm wrong...

Really, it's mostly my way to organize my thoughts. I can't pretend to know the SdJ jury well enough to make a guess I'm really certain of, so by adding percentages, I can show _how_ certain (or, more often, uncertain) I am of things.

I'm a little more optimistic than you. I suspect this has a pretty decent chance of being nominated. It's rather different from the other Catan-branded games, it's simple and clean, and the jury does usually nominate a slightly meatier game to add to the mix. If it weren't for the length I'd be more confident.

While much talked about as the best game of the period, the length and complexity are such that I think Caylus exceptionally unlikely to be nominated - though, as with Die Macher in 1998, it may well be recommended. (And yes, I realize Die Macher was "nominated" in 1998, but that's roughly the current equivalent of being "recommended" due to the changes in the system since then.)

Actually, it wasn't, technically - as with all the "nomination" lists before 2001, it was actually "recommended". This is most properly the equivalent of to the recommended list of today - it's just that now the recommended list is longer, and five games are officially nominated.

Or, put a different way - Die Macher was one of ~12 games listed in 1998; I don't believe that _even given the makeup of the jury at the time_ it would have been one of five nominations.

I strongly believe that the SdJ should be awarded to the best game of the year. I don't care if it's complex or long. I only care about quality.

When are people going to get over the fact that this statement is meaningless? There was no "best" game of 2005-2006 in a general sense. Best short game, best light game, best family game ... each of these things maybe.

The SdJ may not explicitly say what category they're looking at, but they have a long and clear track record of going for accessible, playable stuff that general gamers will like and that you can play with your (older) kids. Caylus, despite the merits it may or may not have, is not this game. Joe is correct; this game has essentially no chance of even being nominated.

It'll likely make an impact on the DSP, though, the award you are probably more interested in.

I'd put some little % of beeing nominated in the five (maybe 5%) but it could really be on the recommandation list.

No realistic chance

Included here only because it's _my_ favorite release during the time period.

I can totally relate to this comment (Both no chance for nomination, and best game of the period), but Caylus? Why does this game get picked on for being too "heavy"? I found the rules to be remarkably intuitive and easy to pick up on, and though it has potential to be a brain burner, if played with people of the same geek-level, it's a fun and uniquely (among similarly rated games) interactive game, at least in my experience. But then again, I get a kick out of Indonesia. So who knows.

All I'll say is that you can change that from "no realistic chance" to "absolutely zero chance, no way, no how, even if hell freezes over".

Probably even less chances than that, in fact.

The review in Spielbox Magazine said it can take 3-4 hours to play and even after a few good attempts at playing, you might not get the knack for what strategies to use.

Indonesia was, however, praised for its' original game play and beautiful artwork. The reviewer was also relieved that it wasn't set in the Mediterranean. The game can be seen at www.splotter.nl

FWIW, I was in a game two weeks ago that finished in 1:45, and saw bits of another that ran 6:00. I haven't been in a game that lasted longer than 2:30...

While I've seen this on a number of lists, it's not different enough from the original to merit a nomination. Might make the recommended list...

I don't like the passengers added to the game. Of course, I've only played it once, but near the end of the game I played 7 or so cards to build to Berlin and then the other 3 players in turn had saved up their passenger tickets and rode all over Germany via Berlin and stole the passenger bonus cards.

You are penalized for being the one to build to Berlin if you do so late in the game. The only way I see around it is to build there early, before people have lots of passenger tickets and grab the big bonus early enough that you can ride a few stops (and pick up a few bonus' along the way) before other players are able to steal the bonus tiles with their passengers.

I also found that a 4 player game makes it very hard to actually finish more than 1 20+ point long destination ticket. I took 2 to start the game and completed one for 20 points and then failed to complete the other for -22 points. Basically wiped out any chance I had at winning.

You really need to temper your decision on how many short and long destination tickets you take based on how many other players are in the game.

17. Board Game: Field of Honor [Average Rating:2.00 Unranked]

The field.

If you look through the percentages above, there's 100% of the odds of nomination missing, and 15% of the odds of winning. I expect one nominee to be missing from this list, and that nominee to have at least a 15% chance among the actual nominees. The jury often surprises me - I'll point to Himalaya last year as a game I thought had no chance of being nominated.

In a german forum, they found out that a games needs to has the save vowel three times to become SdJ:

Alhambra
Niagara
Zug um Zug

With this Info, picking the SdJ winner 2006 should be easy...

Maybe I missed it, but is anyone running a betting pool for the SdJ this year?

That's actually a pretty cool idea...someone should set up an account for taking GG bets, with a parimutuel system, of course...any takers?

OK, time to admit to how poorly I did...

>Nominees:
>
>• Aqua Romana (Queen Games)
>• Blue Moon City (Kosmos)
>• Just 4 Fun (Kosmos)
>• Seeräuber (Queen Games)
>• Thurn und Taxis (Hans im Glück)

Wow - I definitely was off base this year. Thurn und Taxis isn't a surprise. Just 4 Fun has been pointed out elsewhere, and Aqua Romana and Blue Moon City aren't entirely shocks. But Seeräuber? Seriously? Safeknacker wasn't a great game, and Seeräuber doesn't really add much to the game. And no two player game?

FWIW, given the nominees, the assertion that Thurn und Taxis will win seems the most likely - the other game I think has a reasonable chance is Blue Moon City.

>Kids Game of the Year
>
>• Der schwarze Pirat (HABA)
>• Giro Galoppo (Selecta)
>• Los Mampfos (Zoch)
>• Nacht der Magier (Drei Magier)
>• Piratissimo (Selecta)

Well, at least Nacht der Magier showed up here...

>Fantastic Game
>Shadows over Camelot (Days of Wonder)
>
>Complex Game
>Caylus (Ystari)

Very nice to see that these games were acknowledged.

>Recommended:
>
>Ausgerechnet Buxtehude (Huch & Friends)
>Fettnapf (Amigo Spiele)
>Fish Market (Clementoni)
>Hart an der Grenze (Kosmos)
>Hey! That's My Fish! (Packeis am Pol, Bambus Spieleverlag)
>Mesoptamia (Phalanx)
>Roma (Revolte in Rom, Queen Games)
>Timbuktu (Queen Games)
>Was'n das? (Ravensburger)

Timbuktu? Seriously? I love it...

Well, of the 5 games I picked out as nominees:

None were nominated.
One was nominated for the children's award.
None were recommended. This really surprises me - the jury once had a strong tendency to pick Colovini games, and Hacienda seemed a likely pick. I goofed on my choice of two player games, mostly because I misremembered when Roma came out.

On the whole, a rather unimpressive performance.
